  1. Skimming a few of the reviews, they're all pretty painful so far. I get that most people aren't into LEGO the way we are, but that's no reason for most of the commentary to be so rude and dumb. Is it really so much to ask people to capitalize the right words and not make dumb comments about how they misremember LEGO as something radically different in their childhood?

...not that the movie helps all that much. The anti-AFOL bits are enough to have us arguing about the movie for years (although, unfortunately, we can't start hashing it out now without spoiling anything).

  2.

    WHAT IS THE REFRENCE?

We'd actually be spoiling a plot point to tell you. We can say that it goes by very quickly - blink and you'll miss it.

Even Fabuland got more references. I didn't even catch any Bionicle parts showing up in the background (which could be my fault, but I did spot a bunch of humorous uses of old Space and Fabuland parts that seemed like intentional gags).

  3. The red pins sticking out of the panels I'm pretty sure could be switched out with 2-length pins.

I don't believe there was any structural reason for building it that way. I thought they looked like fairly realistic bolts, and didn't pursue it further, looking again, I think making it smoother might be a good idea. I don't think I can get any other pins in red, though...

There's also an axle here or there than could be shortened a bit, although I don't know how feasible that is, and whether you could change that without altering the framework.

Most of the awkward ones are axle-pins that I don't think I can replace. There are a few others that I've looked into fixing before where the math checks out, but I wasn't able to get the spacing perfect.I'm currently making the rounds with this MOC again - yesterday it was on display at the Tampa Train Show in Tampa, Florida, and in a few weeks it will be in Chicago for BrickWorld.
  4. The motor I planned for is the large Power Functions motor, although if I build some rolling stock to go with it, I may try sticking a 9V motor onto one of those cars instead.

I'd like to see it with a Bionicle-based town layout to match, but I'm not sure if/when I'll be able to make that happen.

  5. First of all, welcome to BZP!

    Onto the MoC...

The use of Bionicle pieces is astounding. The windows actually look like windows! The color scheme could use some work. Functionality/playability is pretty good. I'm assuming that there's more on the inside? (I saw what you did with the box :P )

At the time I was trying to use all of my dark orange pieces - this was back when dark orange was fairly rare and I wasn't active on BrickLink. I actually like how the zebra-striped part turned out, but the blue doesn't go at all.

I never properly finished the inside. It does have an actual floor and staircase, but the modularity for the floors doesn't work very well. This was one of my first attempts at the Cafe Corner standard and I simply wasn't good at it yet. The way the roofline has worn over time makes accessing the inside even more difficult - before the last show I sent it off to, I actually went ahead and replaced the tiles with plates to seal the inside off (and keep any part from falling off, since I wasn't going to be there to make repairs).

I've gotten lots of feedback about how the windows and high ceiling would go well with a museum, and that would be a nice excuse to build something exotic in minifig scale (such as a dino skeleton). The more I think about it, the more I think I'd rather build a larger building for that sort of thing.

Wow, the use of Bionicle parts in the windows there is inspired, the detail on the front of the building is all very food. The back isn't the neatest thing, but its pretty big and you were probably short on bricks to make it one colour, or add windows or anything there.

I really had no interest in making the backs of buildings look good at the time. I've gotten a little better about this, but most of my city MOCs look pretty bad in the back - I figure that since I tend to use them in dense city blocks, no one can really see the back. Come to think of it, I don't think I had many windows when I built this either (certainly I'd never build the first floor the same way if I did this with parts I had access to today).

I want to revisit the window technique in the future. I was able to get a bunch of the katana blades cheap on BrickLink a few years ago, and I'm thinking about turning them into a small cathedral.

  6. This is one of my older creations - it appeared at both BrickMagic 2010 and BrickFair VA 2010, as well as at some smaller shows in North Carolina. I don't believe it's appeared on any Bionicle-centric sites yet. Basic concept: the large red panels introduced in Bionicle (later seen in Technic) looked like a good start to a steam boiler for a train. I paired that up with some Emerald Night wheels, and rounded out most of the details with Technic and Bionicle parts.

I haven't tried it with a motor yet, but the gearing is already in there and I believe it will fit a motor. I'm thinking it could be fun to build a Bionicle-based town/train layout around this sometime.

  7. I only joined BZPower fairly recently, but I have a few Bionicle-related MOCs that have been at shows, BrickFair, etc, in the past. This one's been around a while and has taken on some damage over the years. I'm yet to dismantle it, and I keep thinking I need to do more with this window technique (based on Bionicle katana blades).
