  1. Don't know if this has been discussed, but I'm curious as to what happened to Makuta's body. After all, Ekimu woke up so wouldn't that mean he would as well?

A few ideas I have revolve around Makuta either possessing Kulta, Makuta's spirit being locked in the Mask of UP, or he is somewhere else hiding in Okoto.

    What do you guys think?

  2. I'm 19 and I'm very open to everyone about my love for bionicle! Every time I get in the car I make sure I have a set on me, and I show them off to my friends, because they usually ask something like: "woah, what is this thing?"

Even in the dating scene I have no problem telling the ladies I have a Bionicle obsession, they end up thinking it's cute lol.

I guess just being open about your passions, even something like Bionicle, is a good thing if you front it with confidence. What's better than being yourself and open about what you like and care about?

  3. CCBS undoubtedly!

It takes some to grow on.

But Lego did an excellent job at evolving a system to feel smoother while also catching the bionics feel. It's a win-win in my eyes. Maybe a few more unique armor add-ons, perhaps, but even that doesn't seem too necessary.

  4. I can't think of any sets that weren't already listed, but the Inika "heads" and guns were always weird to me. The guns specifically because we hadn't really seen anything gun-like prior to 2006.

Probably geewunner talking but I loved bio way before the guns. It just never made sense to me.

  5. Anyone else considering functions of these new waved sets?

Personally, I don't mind seeing Toa Nuva or similar again, but I would like to see even more creative functionality.

I'd imagine the Toa Unifiers would keep the gearbox, but I'm hoping the Creature sets introduce a new function other than stud shooters.

Being honest, I'm too terrified to even shoot the things. I don't know what this function would be, however I could imagine Lego creating a new function design(similar to gearbox debut) that incorporates something for the smaller sets. That'd be sick.

Sorry. Slicer went mad in the transformation, but remembered enough to know that the mask is controlling him and he'd have to get rid of it. Make more sense?

Yes. Although if the mask is controlling him, wouldn't it control him to not get rid of itself?
Madness can make a mind harder to control. Perhaps the remnant of the original personality overpowered the Spider's for just long enough to discard it.
I like your theory. Definitely would add a nice dark tone, and makes sense because Slicer is the only villain that dons a skull spider mask, so it would make sense that perhaps he was someone at some point, perhaps even a hero.

Makes sense further if you consider the fact he guards the Arena, a place where warriors fought. Maybe Slicer was one of the in the past.

  7. The G2 canon story is (for now, till books) obviously simplified and for a reason I'm positive most of us understand and agree with.

However, when I'm posing my figures or simply jumping into the Bionicle world throughout my day, I like to come up with connective story pieces that fit in and add a bit of creative complexity to a story I feel deserves it.

An example of something I throw around in my head is the story of the Protectors. At first I imagined them like the Turaga, but eventually changed my mind and it made sense they were the 2001 McToran (Jala, Maku, etc...)

I also find myself incorporating much of the 2001 story within the realm of Okoto, and that just open up a load of creative possibilities that can definitely alter the perception of the canon story in an amazing way.

What are some of your own ideas and personal twists to the story? I'm curious because I'm working on a comic book-style story board that would maybe bring a bit more life to our current setting.

  8. Chapter 1:

Today was different on the tropical island of Okoto. All across the villages, dark clouds spread from the ancient city that lie in the middle of the island. Untouched for many centuries, it held many secrets about the villager's forgotten past.

The weather was no different in Le-koro, a jungle village located in the treetops resting on the southern tip of the island.

The villagers, called by race Tohunga, therefore the inhabitants are rightfully named Le-Tohunga.

There are six villages in total:

    1. Ta-Koro, village of fire

    2. Ga-Koro, village of water

    3. Ko-Koro, village of ice

    4. Po-Koro, village of stone

    5. Onu-Koro, village of earth

    6. And of course Le-Koro, village of jungle

Each village has a decision maker, in which they title the Protectors. They have a deep rooted knowledge of historic events; whereas the average Tohunga remembers nothing since The Fall of the Mask Makers.

Since that fateful day, a dangerously powerful mask was removed from the Mask Maker named Makuta. His humble and honest brother, Ekimu, managed to knock the mask from his head. The result ended with a massive vibrational explosion that shook the island and created barriers from the center of the island and each village. The Tohunga were knocked into a coma, along with the two brothers.

Something in the universe didn't want it to end like this for the inhabitants of Okoto.

Six villagers survived, but what a perfect coincidence; one survivor from each village.

However, due to the mountain barriers and lurking monsters beyond them, there was no traveling done for nearly a thousand years.

Only the six remaining Tohunga remembered the times and history of Okoto.

Traveling back in time to the village of Ga-Koro, minutes before the vibrational energy explosion.

Hahli was sitting in her hut beside her closest friend, Maku, discussing the star formations.

Maku: Huki has been distant lately. He said he needed to 'get it together', but I don't understand what he means. I'm worried.

Hahli: I've seen the fortune within the ocean... We are all feeling a bit disconnected, these past few weeks have been off balance.

Maku: Even the singers of Le-Koro have returned home!

Hahli: Yes... and the Ice villagers of Ko-Koro seemingly lost interest in the study of the stars. Have you seen the formation around the Red Star?

Maku: No. I just want to be at home with Huki more than anything right now... sorry Hahli.

Hahli: I understand Maku, I just...

A sudden wave of strange energy occurred to her within a matter of seconds. A light blue aura encircled her mask and her eyes began to flow slightly brighter.

Hahli: I'll be back. I should study the stars and see them one last time.

Maku: I love you, Hahli. I can't thank you enough for being my friend.

She walked to the ancient telescope, which was set on a small pillar decorated with ancient runes. The carvings on the telescope foretold of prophecies fulfilled long ago; however, the stars had never aligned this way according to its history.

As she peered through the telescope, the stars appeared to move and flash. The stars rearranged and flashed that revealed a mask of power that Hahli, and perhaps all Tohunga, had never seen before. Hahli was awestruck at this; since when do lights in the sky move at such a rapid pace?

Simultaneously, a voice in her head sent what seemed an extremely urgent message: You will have to help the Tohunga. Keep the secrets safe.

Suddenly a bright flash of multiple colors covered the island, the earth shook for many moments, and Tohunga across the land fell unconscious. The ground was shifting and creating a multitude of mountain ranges.

Crumbling stones and buildings from the quake destroyed many homes and claimed the lives of hundreds.

Hahli was lying on the ground flat on her back. She was pushed over by the immense energy.

She stood up and hurriedly walked out of the temple, which remained intact. The rest of the village however, was in ruins. Smoke bellowed from crushed bamboo huts, many of the Ga-Koronans were strewn across the ground in the midst of a now broken town.

She turned back to the temple, and discovered a mask... it was the mask most all Tohunga bore in respect for Ekimu, the Mask Maker. This mask glimmered at the top with a light blue energy atop, and somehow Halhli felt right about bearing the mask herself.

    A surge of elemental energy flowed through her body. A vision appeared immediately;

Hahli saw herself using her new elemental energy to awaken and heal the remaining Tohunga. She also saw the five others doing the same. Their names began to come to mind.

Jala - from the Regal Volcanic Castle of Ta-Koro

Akmou - desert bazaars of Po-Koro

Matoro - cold mountains of Ko-Koro

    Onepu - underground town Onu-Koro

    Tamaru, treetops of Le-Koro

Those names sounded familiar... Faces began to appear. She remembered adventures long ago with these same survivors.

    They were friends.

And though there was work to be done, Hahli smiled at the thought of unity even in a time of sorrow and confusion.

The vision became a reality. The surviving Tohunga were titled "Protectors" as whispered to them by their charged masks. They healed the living Tohunga, buried the dead, and began their Koro's reparations.

The Ancient City in the center of the island, called Kini-Nui, was in a state that seemed to strike a balance. Half of the city was in ruins, whereas the Temple of Time, a sacred communication temple, and the Kanohi Keep, where the Mask Makers forged masks for the inhabitants, held strong.

A mysterious energy lurked within Kini-Nui.

Okoto's landscape was changed forever; the earthquake managed to pull the island tighter to itself, creating six mountain ranges and an encircling ring of huge jagged rocks around Kini-Nui. The ranges almost perfectly separated each villages unique landscapes, cutting off access and communication between other tribes.

The Protectors knew of an impending separation of culture, but remained patient and aware they couldn't reveal anything of the shockwave or whatever happened prior.

Their masks were somehow intimately connected, so the ability to speak telepathically was accessible.

Meetings were held and called frequently at first, especially by Hahli, but eventually the meetings ceased after many years passed.

Though the land was in a state of peace, it became separated, physically and emotionally.

  9. Wait a second...! So, Kalija mentioned that Tahu's additional mask power could be invisibility, and... uh... Tahu has a clear mask. Not the Hero Pack trans-orange one, the Comic-con trans-white mask! That could very well be a mask of invisibility. Oh-ho, this speculation stuff is fun!

I don't think its too far fetched to imagine new abilities (perhaps invisibility) to be incorporated in the story. After all, character development is important and these masks could be a good compliment to each Toa's individuality.

  10.

I just find it odd that Lego went out of their way to specify that he was stubborn and got into arguments with fellow team members often, where old Bionicle never said or particularly showed him doing. If it was an argument, he was willing and accepting, still trying to work cooperatively with those around him. True, it could be just that I'm taking it too closely, but G1 focused on his kinder aspects while G2 only makes mention of his rougher ones. And it's not an illogical thing to assume that those who are grumpy and hard headed can tend to get into arguments, as it implies a lack of ability to cooperate or too unable to go by others ways, which can cause conflict.

And again, from how much his toughness and stubbornness has been advertized so far, as well as that being almost all we've been advertized about this character so far, I don't feel that it is an off assumption that this could be his biggest trait. Lego has no reason to confuse people about the basic personalities of its characters, especially since they've been trying to simplify things. The only other soft side they've hinted at him having is when he's afraid of the dark... these characters are pretty basic and self-explanatory so though I do expect character development, I don't expect them to completely change from the basic impressions we've seen so far.

It's not illogical to assume that grumpy and hard-headed people tend to get into arguments, but it IS illogical to assume that people who occasionally get into arguments tend to be grumpy and hard-headed. Even people with bright, sunny dispositions can get into arguments, and even with their good friends, if they feel like their voice is not being heard. Friendship doesn't mean always getting along or never getting into fights, especially when the group of friends in question have personalities as different as the six Toa.

I'm not denying that G2 Pohatu's biggest traits are his toughness and stubbornness. That much is obvious. But you seem to think that those traits mean his character has been fundamentally altered, when in fact toughness and stubbornness were core traits of Pohatu's personality from the beginning, and neither of them even so much as implies that he's now unfriendly, grumpy, or serious. Certainly your statements that he "acts more like G1 Kopaka" or that he is now "the cool and serious character" have no grounds whatsoever.

I'm not really all that comfortable with the change they made to Pohatu. I think all of his basic identity is there, but he seems to have a completely different tone to him to the point where he seems like a different character entirely, at least as far as I view him. Sure he's still dependable/brave/headstrong/strong-willed and all, but he does everything (at least as far as can be seen) with such a harsh tone compared to his original incarnations happy-to-help attitude.

To me, that's what made the character. It's not the fact that he did everything with a kind attitude that made him, it was the fact that he could be as courageous, stubborn, and strong-willed as he was and yet still be able to do everything with a smile on his face; that's what made him to me. That is true Chivalry for you; believe me. That is why he is one of my favorite characters in the whole franchise.

All in all, I would say this is the change I was disappointed by most. (If there were any other changes I was disappointed by... ) I will certainly miss Pohatu's old attitude. His personality reflects what every human should strive for; he's perhaps the greatest role model in first gen Bionicle's story.

As for his new attitude, I don't think it's necessary at all. We definitely have enough serious Batman-type characters in modern media. WAY too many of them for that matter. Serious bad-A s are commonplace in the world of today. But Pohatu? Gen 1 Pohatu was a Diamond among Coals.

But G1 Pohatu didn't do everything with a smile on his face. In Comic #6 he was anything but cheerful, first somberly lamenting the way the Bohrok had driven all the life from the canyons of Po-Wahi, then striking back against the Bohrok with vengeful fury. When traveling through the tunnel to the Bohrok hive, he also comments on the tunnel walls with grim apprehension. Pohatu was cheerful when he needed to be, but he was definitely not some happy-go-lucky "free spirit".

What's more, we've seen nothing to suggest G2 Pohatu is grim or serious compared to his predecessor. This seems to be an assumption people are arriving at based on his deep, gruff voice in his character video (hence the pretty much completely unfounded Batman comparisons), but a deep, gruff voice says nothing about a character's attitude. Hagrid from the Harry Potter movies had a deep voice, and when he had something serious to say he would sound serious about it, but his personality was downright ebullient. Not to mention, that voice clip was of Pohatu reciting a mantra. Should he not have sounded serious as he did so?

The fact that he was friendly doesn't mean he ever had to keep his stubbornness/persistence (it doesn't really matter which you call it; they're effectively the same thing) in check.

I dislike nitpicking semantics, but stubbornness and persistence are not the same thing.

Persistence is the drive to keep going in the face of obstacles. Stubbornness is the refusal to give up on your position no matter what anyone says. No matter what, you won't move.

Persistence is walking along and jumping over the wall - stubbornness is a deep, deep pit of going nowhere. It is the exact opposite of persistence. A persistent person, when they encounter an obstacle, will go through, up, or around it. They will change their approach to combat the obstacle. A stubborn person will not change their approach, will insist that their approach is "the only correct one" and will eventually burn out and fail if they are not forced to change approaches...and if they are forced to change approaches, will complain endlessly about it.

    *gets off of soapbox*

Anyway, I think the biggest issue here is the impression that Pohatu is butting heads with Tahu/Kopaka, when in G1 Pohatu was this lighthearted and jovial friendly kinda guy.

But it's not just Pohatu. If you have seen the accidentally released episodes in the wrong language, I think it's hard to escape the impression that all of the Toa are much more jerky than their G1 counterparts. It's like the Captain Kirk in the 2011 version of the movie versus the TOS Captain Kirk. (Not to say that Captain Kirk was ever the pinnacle of moral excellence, but you get what I mean.)

Tahu and Kopaka fight each other on sight. Lewa laughs at the two of them fighting. Gali calls her team "fools!". Onua picks up Tahu and Kopaka by their necks to break up their fight. There's no sense of any moral character or team chemistry at all.

Pohatu's change in personality is just a reflection of the abysmal character of all of the rest of them.

I strongly disagree with this entire post.

First of all, your descriptions of stubbornness and persistence are EXTREMELY subjective. The actual definitions are more flexible and not nearly so particular about what a stubborn or persistent person would or would not do. And anyway, as you describe them, it sounds like both would describe the G1 and G2 versions of Pohatu in pretty much equal measure. That's why I said they're effectively the same thing. In some other context, you might have more of an argument about them being different, especially if a stubborn character is being presented as a foil to a persistent character or vice-versa. But as G1 Pohatu's original bio said, "when he makes a decision to do something, he stands firm until the end--so DON'T get in his way!" That sounds equal parts stubborn and persistent to me.

Granted, I haven't watched the episodes that haven't been released in English, but nothing about anything you described makes the Toa sound more like jerks than their G1 incarnations to me. The G1 Toa said very harsh things to each other even when they were ostensibly getting along. And anyway, people don't have to be jerks to not get along. It also sounds like in that scene which supposedly epitomized how disagreeable the new Toa are, you couldn't find any example of Pohatu acting like a jerk, which kind of undermines the idea that he's more of a jerk than his G1 incarnation.

Aanchir I think you are the G2 Pohatu

YES! I don't think it's as complex as it's being made.

Pohatu surely has the absolute BASIC traits of his G1 personality, like you said.

  12. So far it seems the new Kanohi only grant a range of elemental powers.

Which is cool, and perhaps we'll find out more about the masks as the story continues.

I do miss the unique "super powers" that each individual Toa possessed back in G1.

If you could assign each new Kanohi a power, what would they be?

    My list:

    1. Tahu - Mask of invisibility (yes, I think this power belongs to G2 Tahu. Also runs in the Fire Toa family)

    2. Kopaka - Mask of Shielding (due to massive shield and animations hinting at the idea. Could probably protect him from avalanches).

The other Toa's G1 abilities should remain as they are in my opinion, so I felt no need to list them.
