IC: Kaenis - New Atero Notice Board

Fortunately, Bacchus didn't have to wait long as an orange and silver streak leapt out of an alleyway and landed on all fours near the notice board with a feline grace. Kaenis crouched there, panting, looking around until she noticed him, and suddenly became conscious of what she was doing. She straightened abruptly, brushing herself off nonchalantly as she tried to calm her breathing. "...hi," she said hesitantly.

    --IC: Bacchus: New Atero--

Thornax launcher?  Check.  Thornax fruits to launch with the launcher?  Check.  Kanoka Disks for the Horse's ventral launcher?  Check.  Paper and ink?  Check.  Spare pipeweed?  Check.

    "... hi."

Freshly returned traveling companion number one?  Check.

"Kaenis!" Bacchus exclaimed cheerfully.  "Good news!  And bad news.  And other good news!  The good news: I got us a map!  The bad news: that map is still in the possession of the person I talked to about it.  The other good news: said person is coming with us to the Arena!  And she's been there before, too!  So with our powers combined, we're sure to figure something out over there."

Kane-Oma just smiled. "The people of Clifside have paid enough for your crimes already. I've gotten out of worse scrapes." He subtly began pushing against the hooks, testing to see if he would be able to use his strength to break loose.

--IC: Hestala: The Wastes, somewhere between Cliffside and Tesara--

"I'm not talking about Cliffside paying for my 'crimes,' dahling," Hestala replied, making air quotes as she said "crimes."  As far as she was concerned, what she did back in Cliffside wasn't crime.  Was this fellow deliberately misunderstanding her?  "I'm talking about you paying for your crime.  The crime of damaging my precious Vista Baby.  You may get out of this, but you won't get out of it with any of your money left."

She noticed him straining against his makeshift restraints, and stomped on one of his wrists to get him to stop.

There was a dangerous look in her eyes when Bacchus said this. They focused right on him, no doubt making him feel a bit nauseous as they likely bored through his mind. Like two, small red black holes.

"That's awfully presumptuous of you." She said. She eventually broke her stare, her eyes seeming to focus back on the map, and her expression began to soften again. "...I'd be lying if I said your interest in the beacon didn't interest me, though." Juno smirked behind the mask, focused on the symbol for the arena on the map.

"I actually had plans, but adventure is a spontaneous thing. When you feel the call, you can't ignore it."  She continued. "I will take you up on your curious offer. But... don't bore me once you arrive. Show me something I haven't seen before." The masked creature offered her hand to Bacchus, to shake.

    --IC: Bacchus: New Atero--

The Rock Agori suddenly found his stomach bubbling a bit unpleasantly as the other individual started to respond.  He glanced into the bowl of his pipe; had he been smoking bad pipeweed today?  No, because if he had, he would have started feeling much worse, much earlier today.  The other individual's gaze had made him feel a bit off when they had first met; could a powerful gaze be another of their racial traits?  He wanted to say yes.  Then his stomach settled a bit, and the other individual agreed to come with him, offering her hand for him to shake.

Bacchus practically clapped his own hands into hers, shaking vigorously.  "100% agreed," he said.  "You won't hardly see anything familiar with me and my pal around, I can promise you that.  Now.  I'm going to go meet my other friend by the notice board; you can go get yourself prepared and meet me there when you're done, and we'll all leave together, okay?"  Internally, he was glad that now he didn't have to pay for a map, since its owner was coming with him.

Without waiting for an answer, he turned and trundled off back to the notice board, where his Horse with No Name still waited faithfully for him.  He began to rummage through his stashed belongings, making sure he had everything he needed for the journey ahead.

"OOF." Kane failed to stifle a grunt. He surveyed the area, then caught sight of the Vista Baby. He cracked a small smile. "Wow, you must have really wanted to get rid of me if you did THAT to your ride." He said, remembering Hestala's fondness for the vehicle.

--IC: Hestala: The Wastes, somewhere between Cliffside and Tesara--

"Oh!" the Vortixx exclaimed.  "I did that?  Absolutely not!  I would never treat my own property so callously!  You did that, dahling, you and your big stupid ship with those big stupid horns and that big stupid ramming!  This is all your fault!  If you had just left me alone, neither of us would be in this situation!  I'd be off in Tesara having a lovely time..."  Her whining stopped, and her tone returned to a more refined one as she glanced at the rival Rockoh's wreckage.  "... and you'd still have a completely intact ship.

"You do know that I fully intend for you to pay to have my Vista Baby fixed, don't you?  I didn't put it in such a pitiful state; it would make no sense for me to pay to get it back into a proper one."

    Her eyes glimmered with curiosity.

"...The Beacon. I had almost forgot about it. But why, no-one has been able to get anything out of it before. Not even I, and I'm something of an expert on these things." She felt the map in her hands, tracing her finger to the arena itself. There something in Bacchus' inclination that fascinated her, a sense of confidence that she rarely saw. An explorer, like her, then?

    --IC: Bacchus: New Atero--

"Well, clearly you're not that much of an expert, if you haven't been able to figure anything out of it," said Bacchus offhandedly, unaware of the insulting nature of his comment.  He leaned in close, though, chin rested in the crook of his forefinger and thumb in either a gesture of interest or a mockery of a singular outdated internet phenomena.  Most likely the former.  "But what you said... you've been there before?  You know things about it?  Why don't you come with me and my friend, and we'll go there and put all our heads together?  I'm sure with you two's past experience there, coupled with my... observational skills, we'll be able to find something of interest, and maybe solve the Beacon's mystery."

    IC: Kane-Oma-Desert

Kane-Oma shook his head to clear it. He was about to stand up when there was a sudden pain in his gut. He grunted, and looked up at Hestala. His right shoulder was in pain, so he began feeling for his axe with his left. "You." He snarled at the Vortix, "Have a lot to answer for.

--IC: Hestala: The Wastes, somewhere between Cliffside and Tesara--

"Oh, do I, dahling?" growled Hestala, drawing her hooks from where they dangled on her hips and raising them high, as if to strike her dazed adversary.  She brought them down, one at a time, as hard as she could...

And buried their points in the sand, at an angle where the handles trapped his wrists as best they could between them and the sand.  It was a makeshift form of restraining him, but she didn't have any handcuffs on her.  Why would she?  She wasn't a cop.

"You have just as much to answer for as I do, maybe more.  And you're going to stay there, and you're going to listen to me rant about it to you because I'm angry!" the Vortixx shouted, her tone of voice gradually changing from one of imperious anger to one reminiscent of an adolescent girl whining about not getting a new puppy or something similar.  She punctuated her squealing with a petulant little stomp.

  4. --IC: Hestala: The Wastes, somewhere between Cliffside and Tesara--

A frustrated scream pierced the relative silence of the Wastes as Hestala found out just how bad the opposing pilot had damaged her Vista Baby.  Much of the plating on the keel, and some on the port side, was crushed and dented horribly.  One of the ramming horns was still stuck in the hull, dangling limply, while the other one had fallen off somewhere else.  Internals seemed to be okay, though her front landing gear had made a much louder grinding noise than it usually did while deploying.

A short distance away, she saw her rival lying spread-eagled and dazed next to his own crashed Rockoh.  She didn't care about that, but she did care about him.  More specifically, she cared about giving him a piece of her mind.  Storming over to him, she would have been aware that he was a somewhat familiar face if she didn't immediately decide to drive her heel into his midsection.

    IC: Kane-Oma-Chasing Vista Baby

Suddenly the larger ship started diving. Kane-Oma scrambled as fast as he could to get back into the cockpit. Anger clouding his judgement, He stood up in his vehicle and began to slash at the Vista Baby's shell with his axe.

--IC: Hestala: The Skies/Wastes, somewhere between Cliffside and Tesara--

As the Vista Baby descended, Hestala could hear even more clanking sounds hitting against her ship.  She rolled her eyes angrily; hadn't this scullion already caused enough damage?  Was he that determined to make as much as he could before he hit the ground?  Every impact against the airship's hull was another thousand widgets she'd have to shell out to buff out the scratches and dents.  Another thousand widgets her base avarice couldn't afford to give up.

The interlocked ships drew nearer and nearer to the ground... closer... closer...

There was a noticeable whump as the opposing Rockoh hit the sands.  Then, a loud hiss as she dragged it heavily along the ground.  And finally, a metallic rip as the weight was wedged off and the Vista Baby was no longer joined at the fuselage.  Hestala was briefly gladdened, but then her countenance darkened again as she remembered the metallic rip.  She trundled on for a few seconds more, away from where she had left the rival ship, and touched gently down, exiting her own ship so she could get a look at just how bad it was...

    IC: Juno - New Atero

The Arena? What does he hope to find there?

The Arena was a place she often overlooked. Nothing had ever come of people going there before, and there seemed to be far greater mysteries elsewhere. Yet it seemed this Rock Agori had an interest in it. Did he know something she didn't?

She dug through the maps, grinning when she found the one she was looking for. She spread the map out on the ground, making it as flat as possible. It was a clean map, she had a good supplier.

"Would it be prying to ask what you're looking for there?" Juno asked, a glint ever present in her eyes.

    --IC: Bacchus: New Atero--

Bacchus' eyebrows shot up into his helmet in delight as the peddler pulled out just the map he was looking for!  As he made to withdraw the widgets he had promised in exchange, he heard a question.  One eyebrow came back down.  Eh, it wouldn't hurt to tell just one more person about what he was doing; it wasn't like he was risking spilling top secret information.  He didn't even really have much regular information to spill at the moment.

"You know about the 'Beacon that beckons in the awaiting Arena'?  That's what I'm gonna look into today, pal."

  6. --IC: Bacchus: New Atero--

Bacchus knocked the dottle out of his pipe bowl as he took a moment to more closely observe the individual who had dropped their bag.  (Vocal pitch indicative of a female gender.  Hunched back and long limbs, traits of a race he is familiar with but whose name eludes him at the moment.  Gaze that makes him slightly woozy.  Almost entirely covered with dark cloth and armor, either as protection from the heat or because of high self-consciousness.  Possibly both.  Oddly-shaped Kanohi Volitak suggests plenty of sneaking around.)

"I'm headin' to the Arena, friend," he declared after a second or two.  "Got some mysteries over there that need solving.  So if you'd got it, I'll take a map of the Arena and the surrounding areas, would it please ya."  He reached into his other pocket and heard the familiar jangling of loose widgets.

The rest of the grocery delivery went smoothly.  Bacchus dropped off Kaenis' goods at her ship, got to have a good look at her ship while he was at it (Rockoh.  Small.  Outfitted for water landings.  Scuffed and dented, definitely been a lot of places.  Possibly not that fuel-efficient.), and now, true to his word, he was headed back to his Horse with No Name with a spring in his step, clues in his head, and a mission in his notebook.

That mission was to get that map from the now-retreating individual with the giant sack.  ... That sounded wrong.

"What ho, neighborino?" he called to the individual, quickening his pace to catch up to them.  "Mind if I bum one of those maps off of you?  I'm kidding.  I'll pay for it, of course.  You take widgets?  I got widgets."

    --OOC:--

Bacchus is now trying to get a map from Juno.

  8. --IC: Bacchus: New Atero--

A grin split Bacchus' stubbly face, and internally, he fist-pumped.  A mystery-solving partner! he exclaimed mentally.  He was finally starting to fall into the mold of those high-caliber sleuths!  "Excellent!" he exclaimed out loud, accidentally trying to suck on his tongue instead of his pipe stem for a moment.  "Here, I'll help you get your stuff back to your place first, then I'll grab my skyfighter and meet you back at the notice board in, say, ten minutes?"  He stuck his notebook and pen back in his pocket and began struggling to re-stack and lift Kaenis' goods that he had spilled earlier.

  9. personally, i'd kill for an anime-style bionicle movie.  i feel like all the "over-the-top weirdness that is somehow also extremely awesome" that bionicle is known for would translate really well to an anime style, seeing as a lot of anime also has over-the-top weirdness that is somehow also extremely awesome.  if not an anime style movie, then at least a 2D-animated one that's also really stylized.

    IC: Kaenis - New Atero

Feeling marginally more comfortable, Kaenis peeks out a little farther, and her voice steadies. "It was something like... two years ago? It's not dangerous, I've been there myself. It's just... mysterious. Just this glowing symbol of the three virtues."

    --IC: Bacchus: New Atero--

"Forsooth!" Bacchus said under his breath as he scribbled down this new information.  Slowly, more and more pieces of this puzzle were coming together.  This was all very exciting!  "Do you know if anything has changed since you last saw it?  Or, better yet, why don't you go there with me and we'll figure that out ourselves?"

Out of the corner of his eye, he glimpsed a strange individual with an enormous sack on their back, hanging out closer to the notice board than he and Kaenis were and bearing quite a few conspicuous maps.  It suddenly occurred to him that he might be in need of one soon, seeing as he didn't really know exactly how to get to the Arena.  He scribbled down another note to talk to the map-bearing individual once Kaenis accepted or declined his offer to travel with him.

    IC: Kane-Oma-(Regretting) Chasing Vista Baby

Kane-Oma grinned as he continued to push up against the bottom of his target and moved a lever in his cockpit. The pair of horns on the the front of his vehicle began to move, grabbing at and digging into the Vista Baby's side. Suddenly there was a whirring sound from behind him. Kane-Oma turned to see the Midak blaster rotating to face him. He quickly shut down his ship, hoping the horns would hold, and activated his blade of protection. High power blasts of light pelted him. He managed to block the first of them, but lost concentration and was knocked off of the Mukau. Just in time he managed to grab onto his vehicle with one hand, leaving him dangling out over the expanse of desert below.

OOC: I hope that all makes sense and isn't over-doing it. Let me know if you have a problem with it.

    --OOC:--

I think you're okay?  Though, to my recollection, the Vista Baby was rammed from underneath, not the side, so I don't see why the horns would dig into the side.

--IC: Hestala: The Skies, somewhere between Cliffside and Tesara--

There were numerous crunching and scraping sounds coming from the underside of the Vista Baby, which caused Hestala to crunch and scrape her teeth in annoyance.  That was more damage that she'd have to shell out money to fix.  Gratefully, the sounds stopped once her Skyblaster barrage launched, which she took as a sign that she had hit her mark, but she didn't see the Rockoh plunging toward the sand like she expected, and there seemed to be something weighing down her airship.  If it turned out that the rival ship had somehow held on after ramming her, she was going to be a very grumpy Vortixx.

She decided to send the Vista Baby down toward the sand, intending to use the ground to scrape off whatever weight had latched on.  It was a bit of a risky move.

  11. --IC: Bacchus: New Atero--

Bacchus did indeed manage to catch a glimpse of Kaenis' face, but he made neither comment nor reaction.  Really, he didn't feel that strongly about it; it told a story, as did everyone else's face, but there would be time later to figure that story out.  For now, it was the mysteries that took top priority.

He clenched his pipe tighter between his teeth as he scrabbled for his pen, eager to jot down the new information.  On the page that held the recorded missive about the Arena, he scribbled:

    Quote

    arena glowing few years ago

    glowing = beacon???

"A couple years back... about how many years, exactly?" he asked.  "And others have investigated it in the past... have any of them come back from it alive?"

  12. 2 hours ago, Smudge8 said:

Hey, before I make my post, if Kane-Oma activated the grappling horns on front of his vehicle would they be able to grab and/or poke into the Vista Baby? (I just don't want to autohit.)

um, i guess?  it'd depend on whether or not kane-oma's ship remained in physical contact with the vista baby after he rammed it, seeing as i don't think they'd have much range on em.  also, let me know how that skyblaster barrage turns out.

  13. --IC: Bacchus: New Atero--

The Rock Agori's ears- or rough equivalent thereof- perked up as his question was met with something that certainly didn't sound like a refusal.  His excitement getting the better of him, he hastily set down the stack of goods, wincing as it toppled over gently and hoping that there wasn't anything fragile in there.  He fished around for his notebook, grateful that he hadn't left it back at the Horse with No Name, and showed its most recent contents to Kaenis: the recorded missives, and the warrants for Varim and Barlow.

"Three things I'm interested in hunting down," said Bacchus, mistakenly holding up four fingers at first before correcting himself.  "I'm looking for information regarding these two missives, and these two missing persons.  If you know anything about the Beacon and the Arena and the puzzle, or the Aqua Magna diving bell, or the locations of one Varim and one Barlow, it'd be mighty helpful.  Anything at all, even the most superficial info.  Heck, even if you recognize this handwriting, that'd be swell."

The Mukau's steep dive allowed it do dodge most of the blasts. One of them barely impacted on the engines and Kane-Oma had to wrestle with the controls to stay on course. He yanked the controls up again, and added more speed, attempting to ram the bottom of Vista Baby.

--IC: Hestala: The Skies, somewhere between Cliffside and Tesara--

As the owner of the Rockoh angled the nose of his craft upward, he gradually slipped further and further from Hestala's field of sight... until he vanished completely.  Try as she might to strain her neck to catch a glimpse of him, the Vortixx woman couldn't see.  She started wishing that she had invested in targeting computers for her Skyblasters, or a full dome cockpit that showed what was under her, too.  Her shoulders tensed, her grip on her targeting control tightened, her thumb twitched nervously.

And then a thud, followed by a lurch.

"Oh!" exclaimed Hestala in a mix of anger, fear, and confusion.  It was a miracle that she hadn't accidentally hit the "fire" button.  The majority of the impact had come from almost directly underneath her seat, not far enough to affect the Skyblasters under the nose.  But it was obvious what had happened.  The rival pilot had rammed the underside of her Vista Baby.  Her precious Vista Baby, which had just gotten a wax job!  And now it was ruined!  The Vortixx ripped her aviators off her nose and beetled her brows; it was time to stop playing around.

In the span of time close after the impact, she jiggled the targeting control.  A whir sounded as the Skyblasters turned around, hopefully pointed right at the opposing Rockoh.  She thumbed the "fire" button furiously, sending out most of the rest of the loaded ammo; the Skyblasters that had been empty clacked loudly as reserve ammo slid into place.  Hopefully the barrage would incapacitate the ship, if any of it hit.  (She resolved to get those targeting computers and that full dome cockpit once she got to Tesara.)

"Kaenis," Bacchus mused quietly.  It was a good name, he thought, though he thought that about most names.

"Well, Kaenis," he ventured, "you seem like the kinda person who's been around, gone places, done some stuff, seen some things.  Maybe some of that stuff and those things would be helpful for an investigation or two I'm running?  Begging your permission, of course."  He didn't usually add that last part to his requests for information, but he didn't want to risk offending his potential new chum irreparably.

    Thank you.

    --IC: Bacchus: New Atero--

The pair had lapsed into silence as they trudged on.  Behind the stack of goods he was carrying for the creature, Bacchus frowned.  He could see that the creature he was helping seemed uncomfortable.  Was it something he had said?  Was it the "fascinating specimen" comment?  Bacchus did tend to talk before he thought, and as such, his filter was rather poor.  But he'd be Pit-bound if he was going to let an opportunity to be friends with such a fascinating specimen slip through his digits.

He decided to break the silence with something simple.  "Name's Bacchus," he said to the creature, realizing that they had never done a proper introduction.  "What, uh... what's yours?"

  16. it's been way too long and i literally have no idea what's going on anymore.  have the mysteries involving the diving bell and the arena been looked into yet?  and is the chase between kane-oma and hestala still going on?  i'd really appreciate a catch-up.
