Opinions are good things. They are what make us different. If everyone liked the colour blue best, the world would be boring. But we also have people who like green and purple and yellow and brown, and those differences make us interesting.

Along with those differences come the opportunity to look at a situation from a different point of view. If everyone in the whole world liked pepperoni pizza, we could all get together and eat pepperoni pizza and laugh and enjoy each others' company, and it would be a great time. But in our world, not everyone likes pepperoni pizza best. Maybe they like hawaiian pizza, or vegetarian pizza. Not only is that okay, but it also provides a valuable opportunity: we can try to empathize with someone else.

Wikipedia says that "empathy is the capacity to recognize feelings that are being experienced by another sentient... being."

If everyone were the same, we would have no opportunity to recognize other feelings or opinions or points of view. The only way to experience something different would be to actively change yourself. But why in the world would you want to change yourself? If you like pepperoni pizza best, why would you want to force yourself to like hawaiian better?

That's where empathy comes in. Practicing empathy allows us to recognize the points of view that others hold without sharing them ourselves (the key word is recognize).

It's like you temporarily get to become another person. You get to understand their opinion, and you don't have to sacrifice your slice of pepperoni pizza to do so. You can understand that someone else likes hawaiian better; you can listen to countless details that support their decision; you can empathize with their feelings towards hawaiian pizza, and you can do all this without actually having to give up your favourite pizza.

Whether you like pepperoni pizza or hawaiian pizza doesn't matter. What does matter is that every disagreement and difference in opinion is an opportunity to walk a few steps in someone else's shoes, and briefly experience life through their eyes. You don't need to change, and they don't need to change. Instead, you both get to learn and experience something new (which is really one of the best parts of life I think you'll agree), and then return to what you like best, whether it's pepperoni or hawaiian.

Sneak peek at my BZPRPG profiles:

Greed, a member of the Toa Daedra, is a Toa of Air lost to his own desires; he will do anything to attain status, power, and wealth.

A Toa of Plasma with no past washes up on the shores of Mata Nui, with nothing but a sword and the memories of a murder too terrible to forget.

For centuries, he has fought evil, but now he idles away his days under Makuta's rule. This irascible Turaga may appear hard and hopeless, but there is more to him than meets the eye. Perhaps he merely waits for the chance to take back the land that has slowly rotted out from under his feet.

So, if anyone wants to get together when the BZPRPG reboots, let's make plans here! I want to roleplay with as many people as possible this year!

    So. Good.

Yes, it took me a while to see it, but it was definitely worth the wait. An exciting plot, relatable and realistic characters, and some of the animated scenes I've ever seen. The songs were catchy and fun, and added to the experience rather than taking away. I've been humming the incantation song ever since.

Anyway, though this is late, what are your thoughts on Tangled? How do you think it compares to the movies of Disney's golden age, such as The Little Mermaid or The Lion King?

Personally, I loved it. Finally, a Disney movie I'm glad to have a younger generation grow up on.

Nintendo's E3 presentation was everything I feared it would be, and nothing I'd hoped it would be.

    Let me explain.

Nintendo (predictably) spilled some more info on the upcoming Wii U by showing the final versions of the controller, introducing the Miiverse (the Wii U's answer to Xbox Live), and elaborating on the "asymmetrical gameplay" that's apparently going to be all the rage. They unveiled a list of games that would be available for the console, which included the Wii Sports-esque NintendoLand, Pikmin 3, ZombiU, and Assasin's Creed 3 (the latter two were actually unveiled at Ubisoft's conference, so they don't really count).

And that's all great stuff! Don't get me wrong, I'm jappy as a jalepeno to see the great games coming in the future, and I'm excited to see how the Gamepad is going to be used.

    But... where's the Zelda?

    Zelda?

    Hold me.

holy cow my mind has been blown over the past two days. seriously.

My brother was in a production of Les Mis, so I went to see it on Saturday night. It was incredible, to say the least. I've seen the movie but I've never seen the play, so I didn't know what to expect, but it was brilliant. I've actually never seen anything like it. I couldn't sleep afterwards becasue it was simply so glorious and my emotions were all jumbled up.

    hurgh

Then, as if I hadn't blown my mind enough, I went to see TDKR on Sunday, and wiped out every last trace of my brain. I won't spoil anything, but, suffice to say, it too was glorious. I didn't know how Chris Nolan was going to pull it off, but he did. It was amazing.

So now here I am with an empty skull because I've overdosed on awesome.

You know those profile ratings, y'know, on your profile? The five stars?

    I have an idea:

If you go to someone's profile and they are cool, give them one star.

    Because they are Number One.

We will flip the status quo, and the coolest people on BZPower will have one star.

And if the person is not cool? Give them one star anyway, because everyone is Cool In Their Own Way.

Today was my last day of high school.

It's hard to describe my state of mind right now. I can't quite seem to get my head around the fact that I won't be going back to school in September. I won't be hanging out with all my friends; I won't be going to classes and seeing my favourite teachers. It's all over.

Don't get me wrong- I'm so excited to have graduated. It's incredibly exciting. But at the same time, I'm swamped with memories of high school, and I'm feeling nostalgic. I'm so happy it's over, but at the same time, I don't want it to end.

Basically, I'm excited to go, but I'm sad to leave.

I'm at one of those points in my life where I'm in between two chapters, if you will. High school's behind me, and the future, in all of its bewildering glory, is ahead. Everything's changing, and it's both exciting and a little scary.

Still, it feels good. The best is yet to come.

July 13th, two days ago, marked my eight-year anniversary of joining BZP.

It's really, really weird to look back on those eight years, because I've changed so much. For one thing, I've gone from being eleven to seventeen, which is pretty huge by itself. I remember my first short stories and how terrible they were. I remember the noobish stuff I did, like posting topics in the wrong places, spamming emoticons, and even PMing Bink asking to be a Moderator.

I remember trying to join the BZPRPG at one point, but not understanding exactly what it was (to be fair, the person who explained it to me called it a "collaborative epic", so it might be understandable). Instead, I wrote my own epic (which actually wasn't too bad). I remember logging on to BZP every few months for over two years; not posting, but not quite able to stay away.

I was there for Vahkipower and Kimpower. I was there for the plushies fad, the iN uR bAsE fad, the BURN STUFF fad, and the Kanoka collecting fad. I was there for most of the staff promotions that we see today. And I am still here, having seen dozens of friends leave BIONICLE and BZPower over the years.

Again, it's a really weird feeling looking back on these last eight years. It's a little nostalgic to look back and realize just how much has changed. Day-to-day, things look pretty much the same, but eight years? Well, you might say things have changed.

The cool thing is, I've never felt as much a part of the community as I do now. BZP has never been as much fun as it is now. Each year has been better than the one before. And I know it sounds cheesy, but I've gotta say it: the best is yet to come.

Love ya, BZP. Here's to many more awesome years together.

Yes, I have returned. Let the celebrations commence!

So, I'm back from Mexico, and though I had a brilliant time, it feels great to be back home. Spring break is almost over, and I have a feeling I'm going to spend these last few days catching up on life, both online and off.

At the head of the line is SS#9: my story Redemption won third place! If that's not a good enough reason to go check it out, I don't know what is, so go read it!

But seriously, it's a huge honour to have won, especially when I was competing with so many talented writers. I think I was the wild card in this contest, seeing as most of my activity in the Library took place a rather long time ago, so my finishing third may have come as a bit of a surprise to some, including myself.

(and yes, that LoTR quote in the title was placed there for this reason)

On to another note, I haven't yet dared to dive into the fathoms of the BZPRPG and peruse the countless pages I'm sure I've missed. As always, drop me a PM if you're waiting on interaction with my characters, or if you want to interact. I'm always approachable (except when I'm hungry)!

Finally, it's nice to just sit back and relax after two weeks of hard work. Yes, work. That was how I spent my spring break. Tell me how you spent yours!
