  1. thanks for the comments everyone!

I'll be honest, After seeing the name, and seeing the picture but not the description, I thought this was gonna be like a megatron moc from his time wandering the desert and whatnot in the Movies...

    But it looks amazing.

I can't say I'm very into transformers but... I did see the first three films in the cinema because big robots
Didn't feel like they left much of an impression at the time, but maybe I did get something from them?

at any rate, the whole build started out with me wanting to make a head with those horn parts like so, and the rest was just a fierce struggle to make it something relatively head-shaped, so I'm almost prepared to chalk it up to coincidence

This has to be one of the best Makuta MOCs out there. If you do not win I will never trust another LEGO theme ever.

well, I guess we'll see! there's some great competition, and tastes differ, after all.

Love it, the head and chest are verrry cool, I do like the eyes. Why is he called a hermit though?

he literally lives alone under a volcano

    (thanks!)

    That there is a deception.
Every time I see one of these super complex epic builds, I try too look very hard to try to figure out how its built, or how even one would come up with such a thing. I have yet to to figure anything out.
    Amazing build.

it is indeed a deception. the contest allowed tape, so I just made a ball of the stuff and stuck parts to it. it's great

no but thanks! I'm kind of curious myself as to how the finished build looks with the armour off, so I might get a picture of the whole internal structure just for fun.

  2. The BBC guidelines say this, I'm pretty sure it's applicable here:

Only post your MOCs. You may only post a topic for a MOC somebody else made if they are a friend or family member of yours and they do not have an account of their own

But so you don't have access to a computer you could post the pictures from? If not, my best suggestion is to search around for internet guides that could help you get those technical difficulties sorted out. I'm certain more people are having trouble downloading apps and things.

  3. I mean sure, you've got those Eco-consense people out there, but if I'm paying 20+$ for a set, i expect it to come in a container more sturdy.

reminder that this means a bigger portion of your $20 would be going towards the packaging, so the set itself would inevitably be smaller. and despite providing an (arguably) better experience, canisters are worse from both an economic and an environmental standpoint. given Lego's current packaging policy, it would be quite a double standard if they started making plastic containers again. I'd rather have them improve the sturdiness of the current box design, the fragility is its biggest flaw in my opinion

  4. Tell me one time when someone under 15 has won a large competition where such a wide range of ages was allowed.

oh I was actually 14 when BBC 60 was on, and my entry ended up getting first place. anecdotal perhaps, but it does happen. and I mean, there are some good intentions behind this idea, but there's no way of seeing whether the respective group requirements would be followed correctly. in practice, we'd have a contest that's harder to moderate - there would most likely be an influx of cheaters, and with that the point of age groups would already be defeated.

(also on a side note, having a job does not always equal having the financial security to buy toys)

So today was Brickeens' 19:th birthday(!!), and for the occasion I made this. In order from left to right - Sumiki's Toa of Iron, Brickeens' Toa of Stone, and then whatever my character is.

    thoughts are appreciated :j

  6. so second place is a thing! because of this, I've updated the topic with new pictures - ones without the weird lamplight. (that was only there because I was taking pictures at 2 AM okay)

Very Creepy looking. It looks like a fusion of Edward Scissorhands and the Killer rabbit from Monty Python.

okay I can honestly say I didn't make that connection. thanks though!

The way you used the black-trans orange contrast is amazing, and the head design and general design aesthetics really give this MoC a lot of personality.  I like it!   ^_^

thanks, I hope he doesn't just come off as a Balrog ripoff. :V

One of my absolute favorite creation I've seen ever.  The sheer amount of detailing is enough to make this guy up there with the best creations I've seen, but it doesn't stop there.  The quality behind the creation, particularly in the more expressive parts such as the head and hands, is just spectacular.  Thanks for putting up this thing, it really blows my mind.

oh wow, well I'm glad you like it! this is probably the most positive response I've gotten on any moc.

Unbelievably great head! The rest is also pretty great.

thanks! (I'd be lying if I said I wasn't quite happy with that head)

I really enjoy the feel that this moc evokes. He has this creepy demonic flare that pierces your soul. The entry pic is striking.

I like how you've designed the head. The face is interesting and has a lot of details that make for a nice shape. The teeth are particularly interesting :) nicely done!

The ribcage is also very lovely. The body style flows together well without the limbs being over complicated.

thanks Roa, I'm glad you like it. and good luck against the other finalists!

This MOC looks great and love the look and the details I'm glad someone is using the spins from the HF line but never would have thought to use them as arm guards.

oh yeah, the HF talons are great for shaping. I was thinking they'd do a good job of representing some kind of muscle shape on the upper arms. thank you!

well, that's unexpected and intimidating, color me impressed. (whatever color that would be)

retains a solid color scheme while also keeping a smooth and shadow-like form. the red highlights bring out the important areas for a haunting vibe. o:

I googled "impressed colour" and ended up playing little colour recognition games for twenty minutes, so unfortunately that question will have to remain unanswered

    thanks a lot though!

Reminds me of the end of Fantasia.  I especially love the arm and leg armor, the plates work very well together.  Fingers are top notch.  Excellent work.

I've yet to see that in its entirety, but I can definitely see the resemblance. The legs aren't my favourite part, but at least they don't stand out as terrible either, then?

thanks a lot for the comments, everyone! don't forget to point out anything you don't like, that helps me improve.

  7. A big congrats to Roa, good luck in the finals! And of course, thanks times a billion to the judges and LEGO.

But I found it a bit coincidental that first place is ex staff and second place is literally paying the site.

the key word here is "coincidental". six judges from different websites won't take into account what credentials you have on one particular site. LEGO's judges even less so.

Helsephyr is my primary entry for the BFTGM, and also the first proper moc I've finished in four years. The general idea is that he's a guardian of heat that awoke when the Mask Makers began harnessing fire to create Masks of power, and now haunts the island seeking to destroy the forge, so that no one may use the source of his power for their own gain. Also, his eyes glow when under a light.

    Criticism is appreciated.

  9. Entry name: Helsephyr

    Entry Image, Gallery when public

Helsephyr is an old guardian of the flame, and grew restless when the Mask Makers began harnessing the heat to create masks of power. He lumbers across Okoto, leaving a trail of ash in his wake. He seeks to locate the Mask Makers' forge and destroy it, so that no one may rival him in the control of his element.

  10. I really like Takadox, he has a lot of character what with the hunched posture and sort of skeletal appearance. Maxilos and Spinax were great for parts, but I don't really remember what the set was like. None of the Toa really stuck with me though, I guess I liked Hahli the most because of the wings, and also because it's Hahli.

  11. DV was the one who got the bag, he was in contact with TLG before the announcement and basically helped with the relaunch, I don't really know the specifics. But the masks have since been split up between BZP staff, with a cache remaining for raffles and whatnot. There's a possibility there are more bags, but I haven't heard of any. I'm pretty certain no others have been given out to the community in this fashion, at any rate. DV knows more about all this anyway, he might have the answer to that.

  12. I'm betting the Protectors will turn into Toa. We'll get a year of adventure with memorable characters such as Protector of Fire - Toa of Fire, Protector of Earth - Toa of Earth, and who could forget Protector of Jungle - Toa of Jungle. I can't wait.

  13. I don't really think the system/constraction line is too important. The purpose of the rule to to ensure people are building constraction figures, rather than using system built bodies or limbs. Using system parts for deitails is fine, which is why the limit is 25%.

some builders like having a lot of details, though. I mean I might be overestimating things, but with system pins, flex tubes, exo-force arms, tail and barb pieces et cetera, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if my primary entry counts as 25% system in the end. But yeah, I'm basically just speaking for myself there

edit: oh okay, with B6's clarification below, that is now a non-issue :B

  14. I kind of stopped paying attention to everything Lego related during the Breakout year. I did get a pair of Toxic Reapers but I never actually built anything with them. I was totally on board for the Ordeal of Fire sets and I also got a few from the Savage Planet lineup, but after that I moved on to other things for a while. Evo's mech and Splitter Beast were the first sets I bought in like, over two years. I will say though, for me it was never a matter of being "too old" or whatever - just a shift of interests.

  15. Also, in case that's still unclear: there's more to gender than biology. If a character (or, more importantly, a person) identifies as female, then it really is not for you to say they're not. Gender is completely dependent on how a person percieves themselves. This should not be a surprise. So saying that X cannot be female because they don't exhibit certain physiological properties really comes off as kind of awful, especially since there are actual people who get this treatment on a daily basis. So, in short, yes, Bionicle's female characters are in fact female, and yes, they are marginalized. And, as Sumiki pointed out, the representation of the established female characters really isn't anything to brag about. There are literally just like, three different character types that sum up all female characters in Bionicle.

  16. okay so for those who missed it, A Shadow Searches got first place in the contest! thank you so much, those of you who voted for it. :>

How did he get all of the golden weapons?

he has them in the Epic Dragon Battle set

    Nice use of dark.

I really like how ominous this looks overall. What do the characters on the stone slab say, if I may ask?

hey thanks, they're supposed to say "betrayal" since Garmadon wasn't always evil?? idk, I probably could've done something better with that.

Don't know too much about Ninjago, but I know enough to know that this guy is a villain. But for some reason I think he's doing some serious soul-searching in this picture because he looks really sad and maybe he just needs a hug. =(

This is really good though, I really like the style. Seriously diggin' those brush-stroke mountains.

oh yeah, I actually did want the environment to reflect Garmadon's mind in a sense, an ominous place with some vague flicker of hope (represented by the blossoms). so the theme of his morality is definitely in the background of the picture. and I was actually worried people wouldn't like the mountains, I'm honestly not quite sure what I think of them myself, but I'm glad you like them!

I love the way everything is aligned. I can imagine a vector from the top-left corner traversing the moon and continuing straight down the path at the bottom.

    Excellent composition, in other words.

thank you! I'm glad to hear the composition works, I do tend to struggle with that part. this configuration just took one attempt, so perhaps I'm improving in that aspect?

    WOW

    THIS IS AWESOME

Your use of colour and lighting is great, but your sense of composition is even better. Everything is aligned to allow the viewer's eye to naturally follow a path through the entire piece. The detail is great, and everything comes together to give a definite sense of a peaceful, but, as you said, a bit of a suspenseful atmosphere.

Love it! Best of luck! :)

thanks a lot, that's great to hear. :B

I really liked this drawing when I saw in the Ninja in Space poll. I love how you made Garmadon humanoid. He looks great even if his back turned to the viewer.

The only other thing I'll say is that you succeeded in getting the atmosphere that you wanted. :) Good luck in the contest!

oh lol yeah, I kind felt like having Garmadon in his minifig form might damage the picture, so I just went with a slightly more naturalistic interpretation of him.

    thanks for the comments, everyone!
