    Announcing...
The Chocolate Froggy Bloggy Building Contest #3: Bold Colors!

That's right folks! I have just recently (read: today) obtained a fantastic set of prizes and am not hesitating to announce the contest in which to get these out of my hair. Another building contest is underway and I hope each and every one of you enters. This is especially timely because I know some of you are home from college and near your collections, able to build.

    The theme: Mix-and-match clashing colors.
I have a theory that any color combination is possible, it just takes the right pieces and the right amount of each color to create the perfect blend.
So it is your job to build a MOC with two (or more if you dare) clashing colors that normally would not be seen together (I'll leave the discrepancy up to you, just no strictly black and white MOCs), and make it look good. (Examples: Red and teal. Tan and purple. White and yellow.)

Deadline: 11:59 pm, Tuesday, January 4th, 2011, or soon after. (That means if I am awake when the clock strikes Wednesday, I close the blog entry. If I'm not near a computer until Wednesday morning, you still have time to submit a MOC.)

Voting will take place soon after, and hopefully everything will be done by the time I return to school the next week, able to send off prizes.

Oh, yes, prizes! First, second, and third place winners get a Series 3 minifig! Don't ask what they are, I'm not telling. They were relatively a chance on me getting them, so it will be up to chance until the winners are announced (at which point the 1st prize winner gets to choose which he wants, and so on), in the spirit of the figs.

General BZP contest rules apply. Or else. (Make it obviously Technic/Bionicle in inspiration, but there can be more deviance into the realm of System than most contests allow.)
Also: Keep it moderately sized. No monsters, but no 3-piece entries either. Between a Toa and a $20 Bionicle set.
Questions answered in the second posted reply to this blog entry.

I want at least 5 entries, otherwise the contest is off. I got 10 last time, and I hope we can have more than that this time. Tell your friends! Link in your blog! I'll make a banner soon...

Post questions and entries (with your name, the MOC name, and link to the primary picture) here.

Poll Alpha is up. VOTE! Deadline on Thursday!!!!!!! High noon EST. Enter!!!!

The ChocolateFroggy Bloggy Building Contest #2 (or at least I think it's #2 and not 3): Steamicle
Just recently I saw my first ever "Bionicle Steampunk" MOC. I wasn't entirely impressed as mostly the whole reason it was being called steampunk was because it was brown and grey.* Your job is to fix this problem.

    Your goal:
Build a Bionicle Steampunk MOC that actually looks steampunkish by function and not (solely) by color.

    More info:
    *Steampunk on Wikipedia
*You will see that most MOCs are brown (for wood) and grey and/or metalics (for metal), but no one is limited to those colors! In fact, there have been colored steampunk MOCs out there, because, really, inventors probably had a can of paint lying around.

I can not stress enough of having it look functional instead of just fitting in. (This doesn't mean it actually has to move with the turn of a gear though.) The really good steampunk MOCs actually look like they do something.

Basic BBCC rules apply. (Especially the 75/25% ratio, as I really want to see what can be done in Bionicle terms.)

What to MOC: Toa, sure, because I like humanoids. Manas strike me as something that are already machine so would look cool steampunkified. But hey, go ahead and make something up that could be thrown into the Bionicle universe.
Yes I realize that the Mata Nui saga characters were already more machine than muscle/etc, but that's what helps so much. Simply re-imagining Bionicle with a steam feel.
Size? I don't want anything HUGE, but I don't want to limit you too much. I hear the Axalara was 2 feet long, so let's keep it under that. A reasonable sized MOC.

I'm talking too much aren't it? (If I seem to have too many rules/limits tell me what you want me to be more lenient on and I'll try.)

Prizes! First, second, and third place winners get to choose, in that order, between an orange Vahi, a poisoned Hau Nuva, and a Free the Band patch. (I'll ship out of country.)

Deadline: MOCs must be submitted in this blog entry by Thursday, November 12, noon EST. Voting will start soon after and conclude in time for me to ship out the prizes during Thanksgiving break.

    Form of submittal:
    Your Name
    Your MOC's Name
Link to primary MOC picture (no changing midway)

Questions here, of course. Happy building!

    -CF
*Yes, I realize that there are some really good steampunk MOCs that are more color than visible function, and I'll probably do that myself, but still...

PS: If you upload your MOC to Flickr and send me a PM with your link, you also get one free Internet.

(Reposted because this is turning into an interesting discussion. Won't you join?)
Over in Bunda's Blog, there is a discussion on desktop looks. (Granted, I may have enticed this discussion, but whatever.)

Now, I realize that some people like their icons. Like having little pictures for programs covering up the pig picture we call a wallpaper.
Some people like nothing to very little on the front screen, resulting in wallpaper visibility.

Everyone has their preferences. What every you like is what you should use. Nobody is wrong. But I think it's crazy to see a billion icons.

Here is Bunda's desktop. Not much to cover up in that specific wallpaper, but he does group his icons nicely. I'd access all those personal files through My Computer (or whatever Apple uses) with a simple Window's logo+E. It would prevent me from a Logo+D to get to the desktop.

Whoa! Look at Majikthise's desktop. This is where I toss everything into my start bar and just do a few mouse movements to get to the program, because I don't think I'd use those everyday. Maybe he does, though. What I do know is I don't need AIM as an icon on the desktop, a quick icon on the start bar, and another quick icon next to the time.

What about Arpy's desktop? He's got so much going on, if he put an icon there it'd get lost with everything else. Luckily he put everything in his taskbar. Granted, I could probably eliminate half of those links, but I guess he likes it.

Darth Vader's is nice. Finally, someone who understands that the dock (that think on the bottom) is meant for icons! Aside from the dock, which can disappear, there is nothing covering up such a nice image. My guess is that that "system tray" thing on the top can drop down too. Oh, such a beautiful desktop.

Alright, my turn. I turn my computer on and see this. (Well, without the music player or any programs open.) Those notes on each side are sweet, they keep me organized, and usually do not show up without Ctrl+Shift+V. They can go away with Win Logo+D, which would make it look like this. By now you're asking where do I get to my programs? DV has the dock, lots of other people have icons, and there are not many quick start buttons on the toolbar either. Correct. I love hotkeys. Ctrl+alt+Z will open Firefox. A Q will bring about Word Perfect. A is Paint. S is Window's Media Player. C is Microsoft Works Calender. I'm trying to make D open Pidgin. When all else fails I open the start bar. The top nine always stay there. Also is a link for my computer. I'm good to go. I was, for a while, tempted to have a dock like DV, but I realized I don't need it.
(Why was the section on my desktop longer than everyone elses? Because I know what is going through my mind, but I don't know about theirs so I assume they have everything under control.)

    Hotkeys rule.

Guess I actually have another blog entry for today, but I'd rather continue bragging....

So if Nukaya, hopefully Arpy, and maybe Xccj are coming to BrickFair, then Bunda has to come as well to complete a list of awesome.
    Please?

Also, Binkmeister needs to come too. I haven't seen him since 2004.

Also also, we really should ask TLG to send GregF over with the next wave of LEGO employees that come.

I should go start a petition topic or something...but not here. This entry discusses getting Bunda to BrickFair 2010. I suggested we all swim to Hawaii and kidnap him, but Nukaya simply said we need a teleporter.

    Edit: And T-Hybrid.
Edit 2: OK obviously there are a few more people I want to meet as well, but for now the focus is on Bundalings.

    Tell your friends!*
Welcome to the third blog contest in the ChocolateFroggy Bloggy: Bold Colors! Members were tasked with building a MOC using clashing colors and to make it look good.

Please choose ONE (1) MOC from the poll below (entries randomized to be fair) that you feel are worthy of the prize,** and post your choice in this entry. DO NOT EDIT YOUR POST, or it will be ignored. (Seriously, I will ignore it. And that post could be the deciding factor between your favorite MOC and the winning MOC.)
Poll ends Tuesday at 11:59 PM EST (or later if I am not up). The top three MOCs place for first, second, and third prizes,** respectively.

    Entry 1. Error 404
    Entry 2. Spectrum
    Entry 3. Obnoxious
Entry 4. The Red Knight (Centaur Form)
    Entry 5. Rend
    Entry 6. Monstrous Eyesore

We had 28 votes in the last poll. Let's see if we can beat that this time! (Note: I will not be voting so that just in cast there is a tie I will decide the tie-breaker.)

Good luck to all! And thank you to everyone who entered who is not a finalist.

*You know, in a non-spammy, not-fishing-for-votes kind of way.
**The prize is a Series 3 Minifig for the top three winners!

Edit: Contest deadline extended! Entries due Friday 19, 9:00 PM EST or whenever I close it which will probably be after after Ca' enters.
(And don't edit your post. Make a new one.
I, ChocolateFrogs, am having a MOCing contest. This one (because I anticipate more) will have the them of a Bionicle MOC, basically Toa sized and humanoid, but not the average symmetry that many MOCs seem to have these days.

    Explanation:
Seeing as how the sets and other MOCs these days have symmetry to them (regardless of Kanohi), I challenge you to build a MOC that doesn't. In my mind I picture the Toa Mata, with two different types of arms, so I think that will be the first requirement: Different arms.

    Rules:
    1) Different arms. Be different in your MOCing and think about the Toa Mata and the Hordika. (I recently tried this with my own MOCs, if you remember)

    2) Toa/Humanoid, so nobody goes and makes a huge MOC, so we are all on the same playing field, so that they are all the same size/type of MOC.

    3) Basic rules of BBC contest. (But I won't care if you take an old MOC and change one arm)
3 edit) One MOC per entrant.

    4) Voting will take place after contest closes (see below). We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

I think that's it, because I don't want to limit your MOCs except to a theme.

    Oh, right, prizes!
1st place: 2 Life Size Zamor, 1 of each color. I will ship throughout the US. If the winner doesn't live in the US, I'll have to think about it. (You'll probably get a content block to you or something instead, I don't want to have to deal with extra shipping costs and all.)

2nd and 3rd each get a "Free the Band" patch (from the 06 AAR promo). 2nd might get two of them. And since mailing a letter is totally different than a package, I'll ship these to Canada if that ranking person is from there.

Contest starts now and ends Wednesday 19, 2007, approximately 9 o'clock PM Eastern time. I won't end it before then, but it is likely it won't get closed until later, but don't wait until the last minute. Voting begins soon after.

Questions, comments, and certainly the entries go here.
    Happy MOCing!

Due to an odd error on my part, I left out two entries. This is a new poll; PLEASE REVOTE. I apologize to everyone for this inconvenience.

Welcome to the third blog contest in the ChocolateFroggy Bloggy: Bold Colors! Members were tasked with building a MOC using clashing colors and to make it look good.

Please choose TWO (2) MOCs from each poll below (entries randomized to be fair) that you feel are worthy of the prize,* and post your choices in this entry. DO NOT EDIT YOUR POST, or it will be ignored. (Seriously, in that last, mistaken poll, someone edited their entry and I was going to have to not count it.)
Poll ends Saturday at 8:00 PM EST (or later). The top two MOCs from each poll will advance to the final poll.

    Poll 01:
    Entry 1: ColorBlindness
    Entry 2: Spinning Top
    Entry 3: ContructoBot
    Entry 4: Monstrous Eyesore
Entry 5: Harry and his Undead War Toad
    Entry 6: Error 404
    Entry 7: Machiavelli Unit

    Poll 02:
    Entry 1: Rend
    Entry 2: Shroom
    Entry 3: Mining Drone
    Entry 4: Golver
    Entry 5: Obnoxious
    Entry 6: NEON SHREDDER!

    Poll 03:
Entry 1: Magical Iron Snowflake Girl Robot Suit Plus
Entry 2: The Red Knight (Centaur Form)
    Entry 3: Rev-04
    Entry 4: Nex 1.5
    Entry 5: Takuri
    Entry 6: Spectrum

We have 19 entries. Let's see if we can get at least twice that number for votes, 'k? (That doesn't mean spam your friends asking for your own votes, but make notion of this cool contest going on that would benefit from some voting.)

    Good luck to all!

The ChocolateFroggy Bloggy, in association with Building Contest Number , is thrilled to present to you today the first poll in the Steamicle Building Contest!
The goal of this contest was to build a Bionicle Steampunk MOC. Take the general themes of Steampunk and apply them to Bionicle building, creating a Bionicle MOC fitting to the Steampunk world.
We had ten entrants, which I would call a pretty good turnout. If you couldn't enter this for various reasons (NaNoWriMo, etc), don't be discouraged! It's never too late to build, anything, ever. I know I'll be trying my hand at this eventually too.

Without further ado, let me show you the polls. There are two, and I request that when posting your decision you vote for one entry from each poll. The top two from each poll will move forward, and the top three from that poll will be declared the winners. In the event of a tie, we will cross that bridge when we come to it. Do not edit your post after voting! If you edit your post, for whatever reason, it will be void.
(Note: I've organized these as "random" as I thought possible and creative enough. They aren't in order submitted, at least, so I guess that's what matters, right? Though I have my own opinions on that...)

    Poll 1:
    Entry 1: Function
    Entry 2: Cloud Raptor
    Entry 3: Mech Onua
Entry 4: Synister - The Ancient Rahkshi
    Entry 5: Steamlord

    Poll 2:
    Entry 1: Tahu mistika: Re-geared
    Entry 2: Miner's Street Lamp
    Entry 3: Clockwork Strakk
    Entry 4: Alphanaught
Entry 5: The Marvelous Work Machine

This poll will close no earlier than 12 noon EST on Sunday, November 15th. (Actual time depends on factors such as me waking up, etc.)

So, you're having fun in your word-based RPG, discussing how to get around this whatever you're doing at the time, and suddenly a noob comes out of nowhere and types:

    Blue Squirrel Attack!

Chaos! You grab for your sword as everyone else does too to deflect this swarm of thousands of thousands of blue squirrels.
And then the RPG master comes in and deletes and bans the new member.
    -------------------------------------
I recently heard about this, and it sounds hilarious. Apparently, a scout in my Boy Scout troop (875) started this type-based RPG (Roachy) and my troop is having a blast with it. Then one day, someone posts the "Blue Squirrel Attack" and hilarity and chaos ensues. Someone started this, and it's gone to other RPG's as well. Apparently it's anoying and can get you banned from the RPG. But to me, a non RPGer, it sounds really funny.

    Anyone heard of this?

Voting deadline extended for more votes! (We had over 20 in the prelims, let's get better than that here.) The ChocolateFroggy Bloggy, in association with Building Contest Number , is thrilled to present to you today the second poll in the Steamicle Building Contest!

Without further ado, let me show you the poll. The past few days have consisted of voting in the first poll for two entrants, one from each of two polls. The top two from each poll are now here in the final poll. I request that when posting your decision you vote for one entry only. The top three will be declared first, second, and third place winners and will be awarded as such. They will get to choose, in order of winning, between an orange Vahi, a poisoned Hau Nuva, and a Free the Band patch, to be shipped out by me when I go home around Thanksgiving. (In the event of a tie, we will cross that bridge when we come to it.)
Now this is important: Do not edit your post after voting! If you edit your post, for whatever reason, it will be void. This happened, twice, in the first poll.

    Here are your finalized entrants:

    Entry 1: Clockwork Strakk
    Entry 2: Cloud Raptor
Entry 3: The Marvelous Work Machine
    Entry 4: Steamlord

This poll will close no earlier than 12 noon EST on Wednesday, November 18th 5:00 pm EST on Thursday, November 19th. (Actual time depends on various factors included in a college life.)

Some kid had them at the WAMALUG meeting today, so picked them up to look at them. Not much I can do with the pieces, as they are solid and one color--which is not good for multi-colored MOCing.
I guess, hope really, that we'll see those green and red "feathers" (on the green one) in other sets. Those might have potential.
Other than that, I didn't look at them too much. Lots of big pieces, as we knew, and I don't quite care for them so I didn't check them out more..

I just won $5 to Walmart for having one of the coolest tie-dye shirts at my hall's program this afternoon. Cool! Now, what do I want to get?

I am, of course, thinking about getting some LEGO. Currently (still? Seems too good to be true. But maybe it'll be over when I go.) they are having a sale on Glatorian Legends for $10, so I'm thinking maybe I should get Kiina. But Vastus also caught my eye despite his downfalls. (Maybe I'm just partial towards green and not to blue, despite his lime parts.) I also remembered this Indiana Jones set.

So now I'm split between two (or three) sets. If I get a chance to buy one of these, I need your help deciding what, because I don't know!

Just a quick rant on movie ratings:

I just found out District 9 was rated R. I'm not entirely surprised, but slightly disappointed that the bar was pushed. (Granted, The Dark Knight could have been rated R, and there are other movies that just barely scrape by with PG-13 or, if R, could have taken out a scene or word here or there and made it PG-13.)

9 is rated PG-13. I was disappointed to hear this, because I felt that they could have targeted the pre-teens too instead of just the teenagers if they made it PG. On that note, I also feel that Harry Potter 6 shouldn't have the PG rating and, considering it's dark nature (and the ratings of 4 and 5), should have had PG-13 because there are some parents that will take their 5 year old to a PG movie. The MPAA needs to rethink some of their, well whatever it is they use (standards? morals?).

Terminator Salvation is the first in the Terminator series not to have an R rating (it was PG-13), and rightly so. There was less violence and less swearing. A friend said he wished it was R so they would have more of the R stuff, but I was glad it was kept where it was. The movie is one of the best sci-fi/action movies this summer, IMO, because they focused more on plot and action than the bad stuff.

Honestly I think the world would be better off without all the anger and violence that comes from R movies (and some PG-13). G movies are the most popular because they're happy and make you feel good and aren't angry. (Pixar entry.) Yes, I went to see some R movies this summer and have seen some in the past, but that doesn't mean they're perfect. The Matrix could have cut down and become a classic PG-13 sci-fi show, right? Star Wars has absolutely no swearing in it (aside from Han saying he'll see you in **** (or something like that)).

I guess my point is this: Movies could be better, and it's good to really think about what you really want/need to see. Oh, and parents, THINK. Also, I've heard it's bad to take kids to the movies before they're 5 especially, since they're minds are still growing.

(That also means you get to use my approval if you haven't already.)

Anyway, you are on the list if I you have a blog (duh), and I like it (duh) and most likely met you. (There are a few not on there though.) If I haven't met you, then I just like your blog for whatever reason. Some I even put on there before I met you.

Now, considering the length of the blog list, the only thing on the front page for me is also the BoTW blog. I want to kick that off to the next page (along with BlogAlert) and see some more blogs! That's one. Now, since Tilius and Chriskopaka don't blog, I can kick them to the next page. That's three total. Also, Shine and Lyichir don't blog as often, so I think I can make a grand total of five to move.

That said, that's five empty blog spaces available. First five to post their blogs here will get favorited by me. That's right, I want to read your blog! If I get bored with it I'll unfavorite it.

    Go!

    Crazy, I know.

For those of you who don't know, I quite enjoyed Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Now I was going to come in here and write a nice long entry on why I liked it and why it was a cool Indy movie. But then I realized it didn't matter. Everyone who didn't like it (pretty much almost everyone I talk to) will still go along not liking it and never wanting to see it again.

I could say the same thing about Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, since that gets put down a lot too. (Come to think of it, so do the other two prequels.) I could possibly come up with a better list on why this movie rocked (that would be respected more than the Indy 4 list would be), but I think I'll just leave you with one of the words from said hypothetical list on why it was good: Acklay.

Maybe I just like being entertained by movies instead of picking them apart for all their faults? (Granted, I think we all can agree that Eragon was nothing as good as the book, and personally I thought Harry Potter 5 was the worst of them all, whereas many people liked it and did not like number 4, which I did.)

(Note: I'm not asking for why you didn't like the movie. I know plenty well why people didn't like the movie.)

Lately, I have decided that the English language is just too modern for my liking.

I prefer old fashioned communication techniques such as Morse code or even smoke signals, but am unsure which one offers better sound quality.

Who can recommend an outdated form of communication that I can be using.

I really want a pic of the cat beast from the first 10 minutes of the movie (not elsewhere), since it was so detailed and awesome, for my computer wallpaper...but no luck so far. (Yeah I was super excited when I saw that.)

Overall, the movie rocked. Action, characters, settings, plotness, awesome CGI and visual effects, and the different...things (various beasts).

But I also could not get enough, for 80 minutes really isn't that much, especially for the teenage/adult target audience. At least another 10 minutes could have been added so we could get a tad more action and character development, and dare I say then add another 10 for some intense monster/machine action and a deeper plot? (But don't get me wrong, the plot they had really grabbed me and got me thinking.)

I also really liked the tie-ins with the original short.

If you were all hyper about this movie, because you liked the short, you won't be disappointed. For people like Arpy who just don't see the big rush to see it, I think that if you were intrigued by the story and effects, you'll like it, but if dark, weird, and different aren't your style, maybe wait for DVD? I can't really say, so go ask someone who wasn't expecting much. But I've read some good reviews, and it certainly isn't the worst movie out there.

Danny Elfman's music was good too; I might have to get the soundtrack. I'll probably put this on my Christmas list, assuming it's out by then.

(Until we have a better name.)

Nukaya and I are plotting planning a nice big mosaic for BrickFair, kind of like this, but not that big. (If you haven't heard.)

The first image we wanted to do was of the Toa Mata, but shrinking that down has been problematic. The next idea was something with less colors (it'll be easier for our participants to get colors), so I acquired a nice big picture of the Hau/Mata Nui, but IMO that's dark and uninteresting. So now we are at a halt, pondering what kind of image to use. We are now open to suggestions. (I'm currently thinking of a black background with the UDD symbol in the middle and the six Mata Kanohi around it.)

The plan is to figure out this big mosaic (using a program(s) we are looking in to). Then we will divide it into 32x32 pixelated squares with list of how many of each LEGO plate element is needed in the various colors. We will then take volunteers who are going to BrickFair and/or can bring/send their baseplates to the con. Assembled, it will be awesome.

A couple questions/points: You will need 32x32 baseplates (standard, not the big grey ones or smaller ones) (though I guess two 32x16 will work). The goal is to limit colors to what you already have in your LEGO collection, in the form of tiles (most notably 1x1 studs, but I have no doubt this will be made up of more than those). HOWEVER, I personally will not mind placing an order of up to $20 or so just to acquire the right pieces, so the question is: who is also willing to "invest" in this project?

I'm sure that was a little overwhelming. (That's how I am: I want all the info at once so I know what I'm getting into, so naturally I give all the info I can as well.) I'll leave it at that for now, and don't forget to 1) Read Nukaya's blog as well for more info and a wider range of grabbing viewership and 2) pay attention to our blogs, side content block panels*, and signatures/banners* for more info (leading up to BrickFair 2010).
    *Coming up. Not complete yet.
