Because I figure I should post an entry of some kind but can't think of anything else to post about, winter testing for this year's Formula One season began today. Seven of the thirteen teams to be competing next year ran in today's opening session at Valencia in Spain. Their fastest times are as follows: 1. Massa (Ferrari) 1:12.574 2. de la Rosa (BMW Sauber-Ferrari) 1:12.784 3. M. Schumacher (Mercedes GP) 1:12.947 4. Rosberg (Mercedes GP) 1:13.543 5. Paffett (McLaren-Mercedes) 1:13.846 6. Barrichello (Williams-Cosworth) 1:14.449 7. Buemi (Toro Rosso-Ferrari) 1:14.762 8. Kubica (Renault) 1:15.000 Personally, I'm excited to see that Schumacher hasn't really lost any speed--four tenths off of Ferrari isn't too bad. There's no telling what kind of testing runs everyone was doing today, so these times could mean absolutely nothing, but still, it's exciting to know that the cars are running again. [/f1geek]

No, this isn't a LotR-related entry (Gotcha LK (you too, Velox) ), but something I think is a bit more important: » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Simply amazing. My interest in F1 has been multiplied ten times compared to what it was at the end of last year. If you weren't watching F1 before, now is the absolute best time to start. Can't wait for the first race of the season!

Found this today, and I just had to post it here. Even if you don't follow Formula One, this should still be mildly entertaining: I don't think that anything like this has ever been done before, actually. I'll have to get tickets to the loser's flight and make sure they keep their end of the bargain.

So the last F1 race of the year was run today, and I can honestly say I wasn't exactly impressed. Usually nothing can take my attention away from an F1 race, but I barely payed attention to the last twenty laps or so. There were very few overtaking moves at all, and honestly not much to remember from the race other than the track. The only highlights of the race were Kamui Kobayashi passing newly-crowned world champ Jenson Button and a battle for second between Mark Webber and Button towards the end of the race. I didn't think that the race itself was a fitting close to the season, although the track was amazing. A few other circuits could take a cue from Abu Dhabi. In short, I'm much impressed again with the way Toyota's Kamui Kobayashi drove through the race. For a rookie, he's got immense talent, and reminds me a lot of Michael Schumacher. Kobayashi may yet be the only reason I'd watch F1 next year because of all the rule and driver changes. I'm very sad to see Kimi Raikkonen leaving Ferrari on such an anticlimactic note as well (12th ). I'm not entirely looking forward to watching Ferrari next year. And with that, there's a large chance that this will be my last F1 related entry for a while.

Even if you aren't really a follower of Formula One or racing in general, I suggest you read this. It's mildly amusing, to say the least. *lol* I got quite a kick out of this. I can't remember the last time F1 drivers argued like these two. I must say it's quite hilarious.

The Brazilian GP today saw the crowning of a first-time Formula One World Champion: Jenson Button. Although I would've rather seen either of his rvials win the championship more than him, Button showed one heck of a race today. The race was entertaining at the start, with plenty of mayhem throughout the field, but a little more boring towards the end. Kamui Kobayashi is officially one of my favorite drivers; after the bold moves he showed today, he's exactly what F1 has been missing these last few years as far as determination goes (Especially the re-pass on Button at the first turn--priceless! ). I think I was rooting for Kobayashi more than anyone else during the race. I hope he keeps his ride at Toyota; I'd like to see him racing more. Ferrari and McLaren drove a somewhat uninteresting race to me; they both just seemed to sneak up on everyone, and it felt as if they fell into their positions while everyone else didn't seem to get what they deserved for driving harder. The podium for the race wasn't exactly what I thought it should've been, either. I think Button, Vettel, and Kobayashi deserved to be on the podium. Kimi's race was shot when Webber drove into him--I'm not exactly sure that was an entirely sporting move, especially from someone who's always complaining about safety and the way others race. Button also drive an inspiring race today, too; passing one car after another, his drive reminded me of Schumacher's last race. For the first time this year, I was cheering him on--especially during his passes on Grosjean, Buemi, and others. I wasn't too certain I wanted Button to win coming into the last two races, but after today, he's proven without a doubt that his determination to be champion never ceased. All in all, the Brazilian GP was a fairly good race, in my opinion, and I actually feel as if the championship went to the right person. Congratulations to Jenson Button, the 2009 Formula One World Champion!

Pos..... Driver............. Team 1 Sebastian Vettel - RBR-Renault 2 Jarno Trulli - Toyota 3 Lewis Hamilton - McLaren-Mercedes 4 Kimi Räikkönen - Ferrari 5 Nico Rosberg - Williams-Toyota 6 Nick Heidfeld - BMW Sauber 7 Rubens Barrichello - Brawn-Mercedes 8 Jenson Button - Brawn-Mercedes 9 Robert Kubica - BMW Sauber 10 Fernando Alonso - Renault 11 Heikki Kovalainen - McLaren-Mercedes 12 Giancarlo Fisichella - Ferrari 13 Adrian Sutil - Force India-Mercedes 14 Vitantonio Liuzzi - Force India-Mercedes 15 Kazuki Nakajima - Williams-Toyota 16 Romain Grosjean - Renault 17 Mark Webber - RBR-Renault Ret Jaime Alguersuari - STR-Ferrari Ret Sebastien Buemi - STR-Ferrari Overall, kind of a boring race. There was very little activity until the end of the race, when Alguersuari crashed and brought out the safety car. When the race restarted, there was actually some pretty tense stuff, but only for the last four laps of the race. If there had been another five laps or so, then things probably would've gotten interesting. Other than that, though, it wasn't worth staying up until 1AM for. Vettel keeps his Drivers' Championship hopes alive with an absolutely dominant victory, and Brawn-Mercedes only needs to score one point next race to get the Constructors' Championship award.

There were four red flags across all three sessions, which might be a record for most flags set in qualifying for a race weekend. Hard to tell who's really quickest with all the accidents that occurred, although Vettel and Red Bull have looked the fastest so far.

So that's that then. I don't dislike Alonso, but I'm not really a fan of him either. Kimi, on the other hand, is probably my favorite driver in the field right now, and he'll be going to McLaren, of all teams. Looks like I'll be rooting for Vettel next year. EDIT: Kimi's not even confirmed at McLaren yet. I'd honestly rather have him retire at the end of the year than race anywhere else.
