This was a really great weekend for me, mainly due to Hockey Weekend. On Friday I wore my Blackhawks practice jersey all day (Friday was the "Wear your hockey jersey" part of the weekend, as declared by USA Hockey); played NHL 11 on our XBOX 360 after school, and watched the Columbus Blue Jackets-Chicago Blackhawks game on Comcast SportsNet Chicago in the evening. On Saturday, I once again wore my Blackhawks jersey all day (but that was only because it is the only hockey-related article of clothing I own outside of my Blackhawks caps), and watched hockey on NHL Center Ice, since DirecTV gave us a free trial over the course of the week. Sunday was the best day, because NBC had its "Hockey Day in America" coverage of games, and our station showed the Detroit-Minnesota game, allowing me to see two games that were won in shootouts, and then watched the Tim Hortons Heritage Classic on Versus, and saw Mikka Kiprusoff earn the shutout outdoors. Unfortunately, I wanted Minnesota and Montreal to win, but so long as Chicago wins, who cares. Yesterday, although not part of Hockey Weekend Across America, was at least considered part by our local minor league hockey team, so we went to the rink and watched our minor league team win 3-2. My parents are actually thinking of getting season tickets to that team for next season, which would be awesome.

For the second game in a row, the Blackhawks had Marty Turco in net. Also for the second game in a row, there were four goals allowed. QUIT USING TURCO, JOEL QUENNVILLE! One would think you had learned to use the hot goaltender when Niemi carried you to the Stanley Cup, while Huet sat on the bench. Crawford is our guy--USE HIM! Sorry, folks. I'm just irked that we gave up the two points that the Hawks would have gained on the two top teams in the conference had we won. Doesn't help that both of those teams are two of our biggest rivals of late.

Don't use Marty Turco as anything but a backup anymore. He lets in three goals a game on anything but his very best days, and we have a potential Calder Trophy winner in Corey Crawford. But in the meantime, focus on beating the Blue Jackets in Nationwide Arena tonight. (Really though, Turco's Vezina finalist days are far behind him, to say the least.)

I went ice skating today. Something I don't have much experience doing. I fell three times, but the most painful part is a bruise on my knee that I got when I was following my brother to the bleachers. As he stepped over, his blade got me right under the kneecap, and I have since warned him that he shall be beaten down before the week is over. As a side note the Chicago Blackhawks are beating their biggest rivals, the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 in the third period. Unfortunately, my mother commandeered the television, so I can't actually watch it. I am restricted to listening to it on WGN, and while Tom Wiedeman and Troy Murray are great announcers, it isn't anything like actually watching what's happening. After all, hockey is so much more random than baseball that it's harder to imagine exactly what's happening. Baseball is a very orderly game.

My ballot: The "expert's" ballot: I'm two guys short of being an "expert". B)

Come on, Blackhawks, if you were going to score a goal anyway, couldn't you do it before the empty netter by New Jersey? *headdesktvscreen*

The Hawks had a come from behind win at the UC last night, with a couple of third period goals by Marian Hossa and a game winner in OT by Patrick Sharp, thanks to a great assist by Patrick Kane. The most incredible shot, however, was Hossa's second goal, when, facing away from the net, shot it through his legs and the legs of one of the Blues, straight into the net. Marty Turco also did fantastic, saving 32 out of 34 shots. The Hawks' next game is in Chicago against the Vancouver Canucks, in a rematch of the Western Conference Semifinals. It will be a tough game, facing off the Stanley Cup Champions and the favorites to dethrone them. Go Hawks!

The Chicago Blackhawks brought in their first win of the season in Buffalo, New York, against Ryan Miller and the Sabres in a come-from-behind win-- 4-3, Final. But the main story is a hit that Niklas Hjalmarsson dished out to one of the Sabres, knocking him out and drawing Nik a two-game suspension, while Miller is making some clearly angry comments (as he should be, when one of his teammates is knocked out and injured). Team USA's Olympic star, Miller, is also saying that Niklas Hjalmarsson should be given ten times the suspension Hjalmarsson actually received. (20 games, for those of you who don't believe in Math outside of school hours) It will be interesting to see what happens when Hjalmarsson returns in two games, when the Blackhawks will be playing--let me see-- --the Buffalo Sabres. Expect penalties on Sabre players against Hjalmarsson. Anyhow, another story is that the Blackhawks and Predators are meeting for the first time since the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, when the Hawks eliminated Nashville on their way to the Stanley Cup. (I was privileged enough to be in Murfreesboro--right outside Nashville-- just after the Hawks won the cup. People hated my Stanley Cup Champions cap. I wonder why. ) Also, do you remember while watching the Hero Factory mini-series, seeing some commercial for a ridiculous TV show called NFL Rush Zone? Apparently, it's some joint project between the NFL and Nicktoons. Anyhow, I was reminded of it when I read an article on NHL.com about a project between Stan Lee of Marvel Comics and the NHL, to create 30 superheroes based on the NHL teams, called the Guardian Project. It just seemed ironic to me that both the NFL and NHL got such similar ideas at the same time, although one is a kids' show, while the other is a comic book. I also bet you anything that the Blackhawks' superhero is some blackhawk indian that got his powers from some spirit. It sounds like Marvel's style.

All I can say is, Turco was brilliant--Leddy was so-so. Mainly because Leddy couldn't handle a short pass that bounced off of his stick and skates and was then picked up by one of the Avs. They then scored their first goal on that breakaway. Some solace can be taken for three reasons: 1) Hawks came back from a 3-1 deficit to tie it, forcing overtime. 2) In the NHL, you can get a point in the standings for losing, so long as it is in overtime. 3) In the Stanley Cup run last year, the Hawks lost their opener to the Florida Panthers in a shootout in Helsinki. The PANTHERS. Losing to the Avalanche is much less shameful, particularly on the road in their home, the Pepsi Center.

And a very difficult task that will be, in the current era of the National Hockey League. Ever since the '05 lockout, four different teams have failed to carve their names on the Stanley Cup twice in a row. The Hurricanes couldn't do it, nor could the Ducks. Not even the continuously dominant Detroit Red Wings could beat out the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009, and the Penguins then found themselves eliminated this year by the surprising Montreal Canadiens in the second round. And starting today, at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. The Hawks had the fourth best record in their division, and ninth best in the conference in the preseason. Now, that might seem pretty poor for a Stanley Cup Champion, but you've gotta remember that preseason is just a time to get your team in shape, and almost never do you have all of your best players on the ice in the same game. Plus, you might add that one of the favorites to snatch the Cup out of Chicago, the Detroit Red Wings, are the only team in the Central Division that finished with a lower record than the Hawks. Anyhow, you can expect the usual fast paced playing style of the Hawks, but this year, made even faster with the addition of Marty Turco, whose ability to handle the puck will force the opposition to never be able to let down their guard, even when the puck is in the Hawks' zone. In addition, the official start of hockey season begins in half an hour, when the Hurricanes play the Wild in Helsinki on Versus.

The Blackhawks close out the preseason 3 and 4 with a 4-3 win over the St. Louis Blues. All four goals came in the second period, while Marty Turco allowed one goal in the second period and two in the third. The Blackhawks have yet to get comfortable with Turco's style of play, but once they do, the Norris Trophy winning Duncan Keith, his partner on defense Brent Seabrook, and the best puck-moving goaltender in the NHL, Marty Turco, will form what is sure to be one of the most powerful defenses in the Western Conference, if not the entire National Hockey League. First regular season game is on Thursday at 9:00 CT at the Pepsi Center in Denver against the Avalanche, which will be on Versus and WGN Radio 720 AM.

Listened to the game on WGNRadio.com. Pretty awesome game. Hossa scored twice, Pisani once, Sharp once, and Kane got his first preseason goal. Corey Crawford did terrific, having two shutout periods and giving up only two goals in the third. Hawks are in good shape. The next game is against the Blues at the UC on NHL Network--US and WGN News 720 AM. Go Hawks and Good Night.

While I'm at it, I might as well mention that the Chicago Blackhawks (my favorite hockey team), received their championship rings a couple days ago. The best way I can describe them in a way BZPers will understand is... SHIIIINYYY! Seriously, those things are awesome. Not as awesome as the Cup itself (and it will pale in comparison to the Commissioner's Trophy the Cubs win when the World Series drought finally ends), but still incredible. Plus, the players actually get to keep these, unlike the Stanley Cup--unless they win again, which they still have a shot at doing. ~LL
