So today at Foyles there was gonna be a Friends building event held by Tim Johnson of New Elementary fame, but at the last minute it was cancelled due to Tim not being able to make it there. Instead of the full event going ahead without Tim, they refunded all the tickets and put up a little pop-up building zone on the ground floor, which me and my mum stumbled across whilst trying to rebook the tickets from todays event to another building event happening on the 23rd. The small area snuggled in the children's section was being run by Mark, who I knew well from Hamleys and had actually told me about the event in the first place (thanks Mark! ). Even though the event was supposed to be generally Friends-themed (they gave us free minidolls), the majority of the pieces were Ninjago-themed, which sorta made sense since there was a ninjago event a week ago. Anyways, I got to work building, and came up with this winged-friends-mech-thing. And because there weren't many people around building and Mark really liked what I did, he let me keep my model. Which was nice. So yeah, I did this. Enjoy? (cat to scale)

LEGO Elves is one of the few brand new themes coming out in 2015, based off of the minidoll figures first seen in the LEGO Friends line. While ostensibly the sets are marketed at young girls, we all know that LEGO is LEGO and you can buy what you like. The teaser site suggests there will be some story and possibly a TV show, and the sets we've seen in the 2015 catalog have a distinct fantasy feel with lots of new and recolored pieces. Are you interested in this theme? What aspects are you most excited about? Or are there things you're not really a big fan of that turn you off to it? Share your thoughts and let us know!

Folks who know me know that I'm a big fan of My Little Pony, which extends to the high-school spinoff Equestria Girls. Unfortunately, as a long-time fan of Lego, the My Little Pony toys (including the Equestria Girls dolls) fall far short of the standard Lego produces, both in terms of creative potential and in terms of quality. And a Lego MLP theme represents a sort of unattainable ideal—a theme which could be absolutely amazing, if not for the fact that the toy companies involved are, and probably always will be, fierce competitors. But of course that doesn't stop me from wanting to envision what such a partnership could be like! The Lego Friends "Minidolls" are pretty much perfect for representing the characters from the Equestria Girls universe, so after much heming and hawing I finally broke down, polished my basic Adobe Illustrator skills I'd learned at college, and got to work. This is my first attempt at a Twilight Sparkle minidoll. All of the parts are official Lego parts, and while many of them are in colors they haven't appeared in before (obviously, given the fantastic skin tones in the series), the colors used all correspond to official Lego colors on the current color palette. I'd like to someday try my hand at making a physical version, the complex curves of Minidolls ensure that painting would most likely be the only way to apply colors and patterns, and my lack of a steady hand plus the cost of materials make me a little less than confident about trying to customize my own version just yet. For now, this mock-up will have to do. I'm currently working on the rest of the "mane six". They're coming along nicely, although there are no Lego hairpieces which quite match the hairdos of the other characters, so I'll probably have to make do with some less perfect matches. I figure I can add the others to this topic when I get them to a state of completion I'm happy with. For now, comments? Critiques? Other related thoughts? I'd love to hear feedback, especially the kind that can help me improve! EDIT: Still no other characters yet, but in the meantime, how about a DeviantART link? I did some work to clean up and improve Twilight before posting her there, so that one is technically a more up-to-date version.
