They certainly do it IRL. Protip: Not everyone has the sense of "humor" endemic to certain parts of the internet.

I've seen other forums where Admins try to be down to earth and be funny--people won't take them seriously when they're trying to sort problems, and it gets complicated. I actually see them have a sense of humor loads of time, just obviously not when their discussing rules and all that.

Well-played Smeag.

Cags, if you think we have no sense of humor and behave like robots all the time you're obviously not looking hard enough. I try to make fairly regular blog posts where I tend to be laid back (in the non-Weekly Updates moreso), and if you read the news you'll see we throw things in from time to time.

When I'm posting on the forums it's generally down to business, in part for reasons like what Lady Kopaka said above and in part because I only have so much time to dedicate to BZP. If you had to worry about approving accounts, moderating posts, dealing with problem members, etc, it would tire you out and turn you off to posting for fun too.

As the people who talk to me via PM and IM and have met me in person know, I do have a sense of humor and like to not take things seriously. The problem is that doesn't work well when you're trying to run a website.

So while Smeag went for the ironic route to show you that we have a sense of humor, I'm going for the serious route because it really annoys me every time you complain about the staff (I think you tend to fall under that 'problem member' group above {zing!}). If people just played by the rules we wouldn't have to crack down so much and be so serious, so I should blame you all for making me a robot.

There.

I suppose it hasn't occurred to you that what you find funny (lame internet fads and memes), others find juvenile, lacking in intellectual value, and therefore lacking in humour?

Not to mention this whole 'rebellious teen who is so much smarter and better than everyone else' schtick is wearing pretty thin. Oh look, you're edgy! And sarcastic! And you like to rock the boat! Way to be [like everyone else]!

Andrew Six is a hilarious person, and he really enjoys good humour, much like most of the rest of the staff (there are some who are too serious, but that's life). But the stuff you think is hilarious and get upset about us removing or looking down on just isn't funny.

I've actually seen it work incredibly well elsewhere, but it's hard to pull off without the right mindset (the target audience for said site is roughly the same az BZ)

And IMO the staff aren't robots, they're just reactive - a bit too good at their job.

The staff aren't funny? What?

Allow me to introduce to you to Taka-Tahu-Nuva, SPIRIT, Smeagol4 (wait, you just met him) and many otters I'm too tired to list.

Wait, there are otters in the BZP staff? I think I'm beginning to love this site again.

Guh. It is a very bad idea for me to make entries late at night. when I'm cranky. Sorry.

Of course it's occurred to me. And I resent your characterization of my sense of humour. How long has it been since I've made an entry specifically about a meme or similar? Memes have been relegated to the "things I laugh at when I'm really sleepy and bored" category.

Staff /stæf, stɑf/ [staf, stahf] noun, plural staffs; staves /steɪv/ [steyv]

Maybe to rephrase your rant and contribute my view on it,

It would be nice if the higher admins posted in the forums for reasons other than moderating topics and answering contest questions. These things are absolutely essential, and I thank the admins for giving up their time to do such things, but even though I know it's logically not the case, you can't help but get the impression that the higher admins are humorless rule-enforcing peoples, which the sometimes-although-understandably-overly-strict rules don't help.

So don't stop the essential stuff that you admins are doing, but posting a little more on lighter matters other than moderation would give members who don't know you personally (or for as long) a better, more relaxed and connected impression of you. When it comes to moderation, they'd still know you mean business, but moderation isn't the only thing they see you as.

You do have an interesting point and I understand where you are coming from.

One thing I do try to make an effort myself is to try and contribute to discussions throughout the forum if I have the time. However time line wise it just isn't always feasible to do all of our duties and then post in the forums as well. Much of our time is simply dedicated to moderation before we have to get off and do other things in our lives. Many of us are in High School and/or college with busy and demanding schedules. I'm sometimes lucky if I have the chance to get things, especially in what is the mid-section of my current term. Last week I put about 20 hours in a project for my computer science class, turned around and wrote a 4 page paper on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the middle east and then drove 3 hours to go home for the weekend to only then have to drive for 3 hours again to get back to school and work on a smaller assignment for my computer science class. Many other staff members have just as busy schedules so we simply don't have the time to always seek out discussions in addition to our regular staff duties. This is especially true of higher level staff as they take on more responsibilities.

There seem to be plenty of trustworthy lower staff who would be capable of the extra responsibilities of higher staff. As a suggestion, you could promote some of these lower staff to higher staff, or you could reorganize the way BZP staff are allocated responsibilities, so that there are less duties per (higher) staff member, and you'll have more time to contribute to BZP in non-moderation ways.

For example, Black Six really shouldn't have to be the only person confirming new accounts, and that job would be better and easier spread out among multiple admin/staff.

Than I wonder if the whiners have ever considered the fact that we're happy to sacrifice our free time (and posts) to provide this site for them and that it doesn't really actually make any sense at all for them to be upset about that. :o

What I really don't get is how BZP's staff can't seem to do that, and yet the staff of practically every other forum I'm a member on can.

It also amazes me that you insist on being so rebellious for no real purpose, guess we can both amaze each other.

Also, why do you insist on talking about every other forum you visit. What they do on their forums is great, doesn't mean it applies in any way shape or form to this forum. The argument that someone or someplace should do something on the simple merit of someone else or somewhere else doing it is the most flawed argument to do anything.

Staff promotions are based on a need to fill gaps. If everything is being covered appropriately then there is no need to just promote a bunch of people into higher staff positions on the fact that they are talkative on the forums. Also mind you that higher level staff members are promoted on a basis of trust as well. Higher level staff positions come with greater responsibilities and greater powers that could be potentially abused by the wrong people. A person has to have established a certain level of trust with the administration in addition to proving they can do the work.

Yes, but 10 people cleaning a house clean it faster than 5 people, and each cleaner is left with more time to do what they'd rather do because the chores are finished faster.

Like I said, I'm sure that there are a fair number of lower staffs who you trust enough to grant at least some of the higher staff duties, however I don't know how it is for sure, and it may be that you're all perfectly happy with the amount of responsibilities you've each got, and would rather keep them as opposed to gaining more spare time for other BZPing at the risk of potentially less-trustworthy new senior staff. Just suggestions. :)

I'll be honest, Brickthing.

I don't care about BIONICLE anymore. That's why I don't post anymore. BIONICLE is long dead to me, but I stick around because I've got good friends here and I'm in no hurry to leave them.

(Additionally: I never post on any forum ever. On all the other forums I have been on I have a collective post count of less than 100....yes, that's adding them all together.)
