This story reminds me (in many fewer words) of a story of Tolkien's called the Silmarillion. Is it coincidence, or is that what it's based on?

It was where he was now, and what had happened to him just a few moments ago, that was more troubling.When the Toa Inika cut the stone cord, Voya Nui had gone rocketing back to its rightful place in the Southern Continent. Two (well, three) questions:1) Why is Magnetism an element? I know it's a Makuta power, but why a Toa power?2) Is Acid a subpower of anything, an actual element, or just a power?Okay fine, I only had two questions after all. Whatever.
