It's possible that L used the Golden Chi to get out of there, but he was crushed by a bunch of rocks. If he used the Golden Chi to avoid being crushed, he would be trapped in there and likely suffocate (and if his other five/six Golden Chi couldn't stop the falling rocks, I doubt the last one could).
