Dry Run #2

And to think, this time last year I'd just ranted about the Astros offensive ineptitude, but did find a nice restaurant. Todd & Melanie, myself, and my parents will probably eat there in a few weeks: even if they're $1, they're still hot dogs.   So here, I am, blogging for a year. I've toed lines, pushed limits, gotten into hot water, and hopefully generally elevated the topics of discussion in BZBlogs.     See, all this time, and going forward, it's not been so much about garnering comm

First Wave

More crazy email!   Mind you, I don't live in Florida, but I have evacuated and not evacuated in front of hurricanes before: I can identify with just about everything, except house insurance. I don't own a house; I rent. I don't know about you, but I nearly passed out from laughing so hard when I first read it.   Personal news: I GOT A KEY TO MY APARTMENT! WOOHOO! Maintenance ended up having to change the deadbolt because the keys in the envelope didn't match the installed deadbolt, but

Not A Moc

For those of you thinking the title was reverse psychology, and that this was me posting a MOC, well, haha: I wasn't joking. This is not a MOC posting. Seriously, did you see "digital camera" in the list of gifts I got?   Anyway, I'm not a MOCist. I lack a creativity gene, it would appear. I can't create anything truly original.   I can certainly modify, or improve (in my mind) something already built. Little here, little there. But I can't pull from nothing but my mind.   The same goes w

Off We Go....

T- minus 8 hours until the opening ceremonies of Brickfest. 198.4 lb., 24.7% body fat   My cab to the airport is here. Amazingly, I'm not going to have to check any luggage. THANK YOU MOM for the luggage for Christmas last year!   The BIONICLE tables will be all that and a bag of chips this year, I just know it.   Gotta go. Next time I post here, I'll be on the ground in D.C.   -KIE, who will throw a fit if there are snakes on his plane

The Voyage Home

And oh what a voyage it was.   Clearly, I was not able to fly home Monday evening as was scheduled. MSY was closed due to Gustav blowing ashore.   To top that, I had lost my credit card over the course of the weekend: it'd flipped out of my wallet when pulling a keycard, and I never saw it again. Fortunately, no one used it, so my credit standing is okay. I had that sitting over my head all weekend, though: I couldn't give them a place to send the new credit card Monday because Monday was a h

The Last Traces Of Little Kurt

Work has gotten snarky this week.   Someone didn't follow instructions when filling out a database 7 months ago, so now I have to go over the entire database to fix it, all but recreating the entire thing, before I'll be able to compile it and import it.   Snag? Yes. Minor? Not really. Life threatening? Er, *gnashes teeth* no, not today. Check back later in the week.   *mutters something that seems to include the words "disrespect" and "moocher"*       Just letting you all know I'm still w

My Brother, The Scrooge

Well, not scrooge per se, but definite spoil sport.   Although, I think it might have been Brandy's (his wife, my sister-in-law) fault.   Okay, Tuesday night I bought a couple of ½-gig flash drives at Target. (Bink, whatever sale you mentioned must be an Oregon thing, because there was nothing that sniffed of it in Metairie.) I figured one for me, for whenever I get around to moving files onto a new computer, and one for Michael, as a Christmas present. $30 each, I think is a decent price for

…'kay, So Now What Do I Do With It?

I need a break. A day off. Something. Heck, I'm drinking a Coke and it's only 10 AM!   Brandy & Michael's wedding (Saturday) went great. I don't know how many of you have been in weddings before, but this was my first. No miniature groom. No ring bearer. No groomsman. Just straight to Best Man. In a way, I'm honored. And yet in another way, I feel gypped. I can say exactly how I feel gypped: I'd never been in a wedding before, so I had no idea how much standing was involved. A third of t

The Antithursday

Don't ask about the title: none of you would get it.   Although favored by 5, the Cruisers trail the visiting Gators by 18 points after Reggie Wayne's two TD performance last night. The fantasy blow made the real loss all the more bitter: next week, I play Marvin Harrison's team, and you know Peyton Manning alternates between the two as TD targets. And then there's the fact that the Saints lost.   7-7, that's my goal this season. 7-7.     In other news, the model doesn't like me anymore. Som

Fun With My 401(k)

204¾ lb., 24.0% body fat (yay!)   I wanted to open up with §401(k) of the United States Internal Revenue Code. Really, really I did. But try as I might, I couldn't find a copy of it online for me to cut & paste. Rest assured that it exists written down somewhere, else I'd have misplaced about $2600 in what should have been a retirement account.   My office is switching 401(k) plan providers today. Er...30 days from today, actually. Dropping MetLife for the CPA firm that already does the

Rights-of-way

Nope. I wasn't in an accident or anything.   I got an interesting piece of email the other day. It's funny, but in a tongue-in-cheek, Toaraga's finest dry wit, way. Double-dose of funny email...I gotta do something to perpetuate the Blog of the Week XXVII traffic. I shall not yield my fame so easily!     It's also worth reading and taking to heart. Because, y'know, there's truth there.     -KIE, whose bracket is riding on Butler upsetting Florida and Southern California NOT upsetting North

Cavity

Cavities hurt.   Not just the ones in one's teeth, mind you. Nature abhors a vacuum, and I'm no exception.   Right now, there's this cavity between my arms and chest, that only Amanda can fill. She won't be here until Friday, so it'll have to hurt until then.     But oh, it hurts. :\ (no, this has nothing to do with the ab strain at the gym Monday night)         -KIE

Blanqueador

Don't ask why I'm up at this hour. When all else fails, swipe an image from Wikipedia   And then Cartoon Network decided to replace GITS:SAC with Shin Chan. And this made KIE very upset, so much so that he more or less ignored "Adult Swim" during the week. And then Cartoon Network decided to dump Shin Chan in favor of Bleach. And then KIE was very happy.     Would you believe I still haven't seen every episode? Seriously, thanks for starting at the beginning.   -KIE

Resolution

In 2009, I resolve to kiss Amanda more.     I've only got a moment, so I'll share something that came via email.   CAT HAIKU   You are my best friend, Person Allergic To Cats. Let me shed on you.   I leap for a bird And miss. I pretend I was Stretching, to fool you.   I'm not sure what this Was when it was alive, but Isn't it nice now?   I want out. I want In. Out. In. Out. In. Out. In. Are you angry yet?     No, I don't abuse Boots. Why do you ask?   -KIE

How Do I Know When It's Time To Post An Entry?

Simple. When my blog is at the bottom of my group of 11 favorites.   Yeah, Toaraga's Rave has gathered slightly more dust than mine, but not much. I mean, I can't imagine my life is so dull that I'd have nothing to post about. *shrugs*   No zany email.   No more softball: we lost the first game of the potential double-header Saturday. I was the catcher for First-Kenner, and my knees are only now recovering. It's as though my shins have been spontaneously splinting since Saturday evening. Pa

Long Live The 337

For the first time in 7 years, 337-842-0361 is not my cell phone number. My wife was receiving unwelcome phone calls in the middle of the night, so we had our numbers changed.   After 4 years in New Orleans, I finally have a local phone number in the 504 area code.     Oh, and married life? I don't think I can answer how it is: it's too early to have set an honest-to-goodness routine.     -KIE

The Question Before The Question

Greetings from parts south and west of Monroe, LA!   Now that it's the weekend and with softball over, I have time to recap as I should. But first, the drop off of Cherry Coke Zero versus Cherry Coke is greater than that between Coke Zero & Coke. *tries to spit out the aspartame aftertaste*   Anyway, it would appear I don't have any lasting effects from last weekend's apparent concussion. Still a little sore to rub the point where the ball conked me, but the headache and mental fog have c

I Gotta Get Outta Here

Song of the day: "Be My Escape", Relient K Y'all may have heard that one before, eh? Every word.   IT IS OVER. ALL OVER.   Everything made in one trip today. The deed is done. I'm busy putting together a desk (once I go back to the apartment: I'm posting this at my office because Cox won't turn on my internet until Tuesday afternoon.), and after that, laundering my towels and bed clothes, shower, passing out on the bed, showering in the morning, and actually making it to Sunday School for t

Here's To You, Mrs. Robinson

Another part of my childhood drops a degree of gleam.   Before many of your times, to be sure, but I remember Ms. Olivia the photographer.  In unrelated news this weekend, the Moss Bluff Cruisers, led by Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald, Jamaal Charles, and the Saints D/ST, vy for their first, and would-be only DEII Fantasy Football League Super Bowl title, opposing the Metry Mudbugs, who feature Phillip Rivers, Adrian Peterson, Knowshon Moreno, and Brandon Marshall. Between The Dreaming And The Coming True

...lies all the effort that must be put forth.   The heat has been absolutely oppressive lately. 88° F (31° C) with a 105° F (40.5° C) heat index at 8 AM this morning. It has been a week since the temperature has dropped below 80° F (26.7° C), and tomorrow's high will be 98° F (36.7° C), with a heat index sure to break the 120° F (49° C) mark.   Normally, I'm not one to complain about the heat. I live, by choice, in south Louisiana, and I'm even proud of it. Still, heat indices this high make

Are You Ready For Some Football....part The Fourth

Sam Houston High School defeated Patterson High School last night, 21-20. Patterson scored a touchdown with 30 seconds to play, but without a functioning placekicker, they were forced to go for the 2-point conversion. I understand the quarterback option was stopped in the open field inside the 1. However, I left with 2½ minutes to play in the third quarter, with the score tied at 14-14, when it came to me: I really didn't care how this game ended.   Last night was a cross-class social. Solstice

Republished with an edit.   Winter arrives in the Big Easy with a veritable deluge. *grabs the bottom blades of the blinds in his office window (behind his computer monitor), and pulls them down to check outside*   Oh, that is SO not funny. I was late for work because of the rain, and now the rain has quit, less than an hour later.   Anyway, 3" (7½ cm) of rain over the past 24 hours, might be just as well that it'd slack off.   ......   I'm not quite as confident about my picks as I was la
