Save Bionicle Legends #7!

In another of those everyday twists of fate, a sidenote in my first entry of the day leads to the subject of this one.   I just emailed Scholastic myself. Another drop in the (hoped-for) tidal wave. Do your part to save this incredibly important book from its prospective doom!   -BC

Saturday With Forks

I invited the exchange students over for dinner on Saturday. David was back in Ireland for a bit, so Anssi, a non-student living in residence, took his place. The other two, as you know, are Alena from Czech and Fabian from Alaska.   I set a reminder on my cell phone for 5:30 pm, in plenty of time to prepare for dinner at 7. Unfortunately, I fell asleep reading Dan Brown's Deception Point and woke up to my dinner guests knocking at the door. Talk about a power nap.   I was supposed to be makin

Rune Majiks

I finally finished my rune set. They ain't pretty, but they'll do the job. The Elder Futhark, in three aettir (groups of eight).   Credit to my wonderful grandma for putting together this handy drawstring bag. I consecrated them last night (a half moon, as it happens) and polished them with a finish made of premium olive oil and beeswax.   I have requested only one thing from these runes:         "Teach me wisdom."      It'll be interesting to see what they have to say when I start d

Revenge Of The Double 'i'

Disclaimer: Any hidden meaning in the following entry is strictly subjective.  I've been known on this site by the handle BCii for many years. It always felt appropriate, from the day I came up with it. To those who wonder what it means, I can't give you a straight answer. It means a lot of things. Many interpretations of that cryptic name have revealed themselves to me over the years: some whimsical, some banal, and others mystical.   As you know, I recently changed my display name to the BCt

Restoring Emotional Balance

From Fringe Knowledge for Beginners, a most interesting little book. It contains much that might seem pretty "out there" for the average person, but also some very practical, down-to-earth, mainstream-compatible advice. The chapter on emotional balance has such a broad scope of general relevance (for anyone interested in such a thing) that it's worth sharing here in its entirety.     ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's such a treat to see all these old characters again. GregF must have a crystal ball that shows him what I want him to write.

Red Vs. Blue

This is something that's been bugging me since the US presidential election.       IS IT or IS IT NOT a FACT   that in PAST ELECTIONS,   BLUE represented the REPUBLICAN party, and   RED represented the DEMOCRATIC party?       IF this is a FACT, then   WHY WAS THE OPPOSITE THE CASE IN THIS YEAR'S ELECTION?       OR am I just an ignorant foreigner? The only explanation I can think of is that they alternate colours. Which would be REALLY WEIRD.       Update: Silly me.   I could have lo

Here's what I had today. Thought I'd share.   Mediterranean Spring Feast Ingredients:   2 crunchy tomatoes ½ deep green zucchini 1 good, strong onion half a dozen fresh champignons 1 clove crushed garlic sea salt black pepper thyme olive oil and just a little sprinkle of light balsamico vinegar.     Directions:   Dice up the vegetables and the mushrooms. Recent Happenings I R L

1. My dear cousin had her baby last week. They said it's a healthy boy, dark-haired like his father. I am making a cake for them at this very moment.   2. I spent the weekend at a relative's summer cabin. He's a cool guy, and the place is really something. I helped him saw some lumber on Saturday, but mostly I just settled in, relaxed, and enjoyed the the idyll of the river-pond. I will most likely be spending many of my weekends there this summer (and why not weekdays too, schedules permittin

Reboot

Windows XP is no more. Thank the Trojan horse. My mobile Internet connection is gone along with it, but at least the public library has an open WLAN.   Ubuntu is great, sure, but it's still a pain to get used to a new operating system and get it all tricked out with codecs and drivers and software so it'll do everything I need it to do. I really, really hope the virus isn't affecting Ubuntu The guy sitting next to me in the library says it's not possible for a Windows EXE file to run under Ubun

Rebirth And Renewal: Artist's Commentary

Discussion of the MOC itself should be directed to the BBC topic.   --------------------     This MOC was started a long time ago in response to a building challenge on another site, to make a creation based on a work of art. I found my inspiration in an image by a prolific artist who goes by the alias "soundlessdawn":   I'd been itching to use Nuju's Hordika weapons as wing sections, and this struck me as the perfect application. The glow-in-the-dark exoskeleton design came later, after

Rebirth And Renewal

I just finished a MOC that's probably my most artistic to date. It is based on an ancient motif of the Egyptian mythic tradition. I plan to photograph it on Thursday (my day off this week -- weekend is work!) and try to have everything done -- gallery, inscription, and Photoshop art -- by next Wednesday. I don't normally hype my MOCs very much before publication, but I thought I'd announce this one early because of the esoteric significance of it at this juncture in my life.   --------------

Readin' And 'ritin' (but No 'rithmetic)

I reread Beliwa: Toa of Demons' Crossroads epic today, up to chapter 7, which is as far as it had gotten when I printed it out some months ago. It's a curious mix of Terry Pratchett, gothic vampire lit, and BZ-Koro madness. It's apparently been a smash hit, so with mass appeal and my personal plug, it is an official must-read.   As for what I've been writing lately, I've divided my time between rewriting my S&T contest entry from scratch and realizing a story idea I first had way back in 20

Queen Of Diamonds

This is a MOC of Brenna, the other main character from my Elements 2 story. The Queen of Diamonds is the card that inspired her, but she became something else somewhere along the way.         (No BBC topic as yet. I'll probably post one thread for all the characters when they're done.)

Protip

Avoid exposure to all glowing LCD displays, including computer monitors and cell phones, for two hours before going to bed in the evening. The light from these displays suppresses and disrupts your body's production of melatonin, the "sleep hormone."   I wish I'd known this a long time ago. It also explains why it's possible to stay up all night in front of the computer and not feel sleepy, merely sleep-deprived.

Presidential Produce Yayz

As of March 20, 2009, the White House has an organic vegetable garden.   First Lady Michelle Obama broke ground on the garden at a special ceremony.   ------------------------   I want to grow some of my own food as well, but being an apartment-dweller, I'm not lucky enough to have a piece of land. A rooftop garden would be the way to go, but first I'll need A. access to the roof, and B. permission to do my thing up there. After that, it's just a matter of seeds, supplies, and a little swe

Precisely 1080p

Those who already get it, get it; those who don't, probably won't even read it. Do I care? Depends what you mean by "care." But straight up? No, I don't. A. It's kids playing with toys, and B. you can't change people and it's hopeless to try. So... accept it, care not, move on.   That said, Jen's rant did spark something on this end of things. A long-neglected "feminine" MOC-in-progress was dusted off and looked over with a critical eye. The age-old issue in question is a non-issue in this case

Potentially Useful/annoying Quirk Of The Blog Hosting Software

If I go to "Entry Options > Edit" and toggle "Add entry as: Published" from there, it doesn't bump the entry. While this may save me the trouble of adding original dates back in, there is a funny speedbump in the IPS database that throws up an error message when I hit "Submit changes."   Just FYI in case you ever need to make use of this little quirk - or avoid it.

Post Anxiety

My post count is at 1,233, people. This is it. I'll never reach 12,345, so my next post is the last one that's ever going to "count." Up from 1, you know what I mean.   *Phoof. Phoof.* (Releasing the pressure.) *Phoof. Phoof.*   . . .   Dagnabbit, I'll never make that post if I keep stressing over it!   Here goes, off to post. . . somewhere.   Update: It is now midnight, and I have not made my 1,234th post. Sleep comes first, I'm afraid.   <o> <o>

Here.   My post count didn't even occur to me as I wrote that. Only noticed afterwards. But hey, it couldn't have been in a more fitting topic. MOCing is the thing closest to my heart about BIONICLE, and it always will be.   Thoughts on what I wrote. . .   Siilivaara needs a theme song. And at least one hedgehog MOC!   My denizens are pretty tame compared to anything by Bunda.   <o> <o>

Pics Of The Bionicle Rock Concert And More From Model Expo

I finally uploaded some photos from Model Expo. I've got a lot more yet, but at least now you get to see my diorama:     I suppose it would be a good idea to make a topic for this, since it's my biggest-ever Lego project. Will update with the link when that's done.
