I've Survived

As of Monday:   Our production of A Chorus Line is finally OVER. It was fun, at least for me, since I was on tech crew and didn't have to dance and sing. (I was doing the spotlight.) But three hours of rehearsal every night gets more than a bit time-consuming, especially last week, when from Tuesday to Friday I just didn't go home until 10 because we got dinner at 5 and then rehearsal went from 6 to 10, so there was no point in leaving school. Then Friday was opening night, and we had two perfo

Editor-in-waiting

So, I'm back from vacation. It was very productive, and in a completely unexpected way: I started and finished one short story (seven pages handwritten) within two days after getting the idea, and I also got a very good start on another one whose idea I've had for a while. That second one I've been thinking about for literally years. It started out as a few paragraphs written for an exercise in a writing class two summers ago. Then I wanted to make a proper short story out it, so I've worked on

One Of Those Relaxing Days

Today was really quite weird, but in the same way it was one of the best school days I've ever had. I wound up with four free periods, which was just wonderful: we had Astronomy off, because the teacher was still sick and, though present, couldn't lecture us with his voice as it was; Katie wasn't here, so we had no Greek; then the AP Latin class had already decided we would have an "off day," since we just finished through book 9; and I have 9th free every day anyway.   It was fun, once I got u

Narona

(I was going to title this "Narona and the ... well, it's not quite a Little Pony," but then I realized I had built my Maha's head completely wrong and became too embarrassed to even post it. That will have to come tomorrow. Which is just as well, because there's a Matoran who goes with it who needs a name.   Clearly, being a pretty pegasus is affecting my brain.)     Anyway, the Ga-Matoran I asked for a name for a couple entries now has one. She is Narona, based on something suggested by Gr

Kanohi Mahri Renamed

One of the many reasons I like 2001 and 2 best of the Bionicle years is the sound of the names, either borrowed from or based on Maori. (Ignore the fiasco resulting from the former for the moment.) 2001 established the Pacific islander sound, and 2002 added the terminal k and silent h's that completed the general sound and appearance of the names.   2006 and 2007, however, changed this. The general phonetics remain, but now there are all manner of new consonants and consonant combinations, and

Summer

Wow. I hadn't quite realized it had been a full two months since I updated this. Admittedly BZP was offline for one of them, but still.   So. I've had a lot going on. Biggest being that I'm leaving for college next Monday. Yeah. I'm somewhere between excited and downright terrified. Not so much of going there, but because it's such a huge change for me and I'm worrying about things not being as good as I'm hoping (roommate, dorm life, etc.) and things like that. Plus, I've always liked being a

Conspiracy Theory #204

Conspiracy theory #204: the Brotherhood of Makuta is actually good.   And no, I don't have the slightest shred of evidence to support this. But I can explain everything! Really! (Well, almost. Not Mata Nui. Help?)   ———   • The Order of Mata Nui and Brotherhood of Makuta are secretly allies.   • Their common enemy is the Dark Hunters.   • In order to conceal the identity of the destined Toa Metru, Mata Nui changed the stars to show that Nuhrii & Co. would become Toa. The Order then p

The Red Death

"Ne me touchez pas! Je suis la Mort Rouge qui passe!" – Le Fantôme de l'Opéra, Gaston Leroux     No, this has nothing to do with Edgar Allan Poe. It's the Phantom of the Opera, disguised as the Red Death at the Opéra's masked ball ... Strictly from the book, hence why he has a skull for a head rather than the theatrical half-mask. Embroidered on the back of his cloak is the above quote – "Do not touch me! I am the Red Death passing [among you]!" He probably ought to be entirely red, but the

Spring Comes

At last!   I love snow, but I like spring and rain and slightly warmer (but still nice and cool) weather even more. It's still cold, barely over freezing, and was windy earlier, but at least the snow is melting and warmer weather and rain will be here soon... Not quite in time for my birthday tomorrow, but it's good enough as it is.   Of course, that's going to be plenty weird already, my birthday the day before Easter... ~ ToM

Things To Come

A couple things you'll be seeing in the coming week, hopefully...     I'm exhausted after this past week. Among other things, writing 20-odd lines of rhyming iambic pentameter in one afternoon is a trying chore. x_x So are DBQs. I hated them in 8th grade; I still hate them now. But Muse (the literary magazine) finally met yesterday, so that was fun...   And then there's Spirit Week next week, complete with a planning/skit costume-making session this afternoon at Dani's house...   *enjoys th

Points Of Distinction

A treatise on set-to-character recognizability.   As I see it, there are three basic elements by which it is possible for a new set of a character to be recognizable as his or her previous form. If any two of these are kept, it is very easy to recognize said character. If only one is kept, recognizability can be pulled off, but you'd have to be one heck of a good designer to do it, and it also depends on which one it is that is kept. If none are kept, there is nothing by which to identify the c

Sleet

WEEKEND.   *cough* *hack* *chokes* ...But still enrhumé, since I still have a cold and there's no equivalent English adjective beyond "having a cold." Congested I certainly am, but that's not quite it.   Anyway, the weather has been exceptionally strange today. When I woke up (unwillingly early), it sounded like it was hailing, but it was in fact more like sleet than anything else. As in snowflake-sized pieces of solid ice. Which meant that basically all of everything was immersed – not covere

The Rest Of Them

Nothing much to do at the moment, sooo...   First, I'm not going to go on a tirade about how dreadful they are as the Nuva. I did that with the Phantoka, and these are even worse as Toa Nuva. Next to no points of recognizability (except on Onua). But I do have to say, again, that Tahu and Gali could work swell with dark red and dark blue if only they had Kanohi Nuva-like masks.   Now, with that out of the way...   Gali Mistika :: I rather like her design overall, ignoring that she's Gali. Planets

Mars is bright tonight.   Or at least I think it was Mars. It may have been Saturn. Or Jupiter. I'm not an astronomer (or an astrologer), but I do know it was a planet. It was far too bright to be a star, hanging in the western sky in the dark... First time I've ever seen and recognized a planet with my naked eyes. I've seen Saturn through a telescope before (amazing sight), but I don't remember ever seeing a planet unaided.   Where's Nixie when you need her? ~ ToM

A Compendium

I meant to post a few entries in the past few days, but I got so wrapped up in CGing the below poster that I ran out of time...   First and foremost! Chapter two of Learn to Fly has now been posted, now that BL10 spoilers are allowed. See if you can tell what set I drew on for Her design, though I think I made it pretty blatantly obvious...   Second, my AP scores arrived today. I got a 5 on all of them (that's the highest score, for all unfamiliar with the system). It made me quite elated.

Some More Things

Gummy bears reveal strange things under torture. Aeneas has mood swings. There are Nektann. Waking up at 3 AM and drinking three or four cups of coffee causes people to be alarmingly hyper for the rest of the day. Additionally, I am now in possession of Carapar and Hewkii Mahri. The former because I like him, the latter for pieces so I can make him a lot better. I had planned to get Kongu and Hewkii, taking advantage of the buy-one-get-one-50%-off sale (which I still did), but TRU had no Kongu,

The Goddess Of The Dawn

Something of an irony to be posting an entry with this title near sunset, but...   Through a variety of causes that had no relation at all to each other, I've spent the past couple of hours reading about Stonehenge and Newgrange and other such things and decided that the subject is intensely interesting and will require much further investigation of it. It also strengthened my desire to learn some variety of Gaelic, because its phonetics are even worse than French and thereby highly fascinating

It's A L I V E

I have updated Quest for Lost Dreams for the first time in many months.   Oh, I had fun with this one. Reworked the Visorak saga. Came up with two scenes in the space of about ten minutes a few days ago, wrote them, and loved them extremely. I <3 the Turaga (specifically Nokama and Vakama) so much... and getting to describe quiet scenes and night and the sea...   And I need people's on which Matoranized name for the Coliseum to use, too; see the top of chapter II for that...   As always, r

Yellow

A thing I noticed some time ago, reenforced dramatically yesterday:   Take all the canister series we've had since yellow-orange replaced brown. Inika, Barraki, Mahri, Phantoka, Mistika, Glatoriana, Glatorian Legends. There is only one color of the six that I have bought out of every series: yellow (or whatever it was at the time).   Hewkii Inika was -iron grey- and had an awesome chain. Carapar just looked cool; the trans-grey and yellow-orange blend was awesome. Hewkii Mahri I got mainly bec

Over The River And Through The Woods

Well, over a lot of rivers and through several woods...   I'm off on Thanksgiving break, down to Delaware, just so you all know. Not that it matters much, if at all, on your end, but I figured I might as well announce my absence somewhere. So there you go. I have.   Lewa Phantoka was delayed, again because of weather, but his design isn't quite perfect yet anyway. That sketch of Hahli can be found if you know where to look. SSC4 is going to be quite spifftastic, if I do say so myself. And I'm

Gondorian New Year!

Music: Live to Tell the Tale, Nightwish Mood: Accomplished   Of greatest interest: Like how she looks now? Then go see the rest of the Mahri Remixed – you may like the rest even more. (And yay for shameless plugs! ) I just finished drawing Kongu, the last one I needed to do, so I hope to have him up tomorrow.   Secondly, on Saturday I got Nocturn and Axonn. Nocturn is just about completely awesome – lime greeeeeeeen! And glow-in-the-dark blue! – Axonn is a pretty good set, not bad but not

Little Shop Of Horrors

I'm not sure if I've mentioned this here before, but a couple of my friends are directing a production of Little Shop of Horrors for their senior study project at school. And I'm in charge of tech and set stuff for it.   It's going to be so fun. We started rehearsals last night with a read-through, in which I sang for Mushnik and Orin because neither of their actors were there. Needless to say, I make a terrible Orin. I'm not nearly tough enough. And his part is -not- in a good range for my voi

The Final Final

Finals are ovah.   Yes, with an h. French was pretty easy yesterday – apparently I got a 93. Then history was really easy, but took so long that I finished after the full two hours were up. By scribbling the end of my essay as the teachers were going around collecting.   Today, Algebra 2x was remararkably straightforward. Almost easy – there were no surprises, nothing obscure and insanely complicated, just stuff that we had gone over in review. Not even all the stuff on the review sheet was on

Ideas For Icarax

I like Icarax. Not a bad design, good overall look (rather like red armor over a black body, as I've said), but no reason I would buy him, as he has no recolored pieces at all... So naturally that got me thinking of what I would do to change him to make him more appealing. There are a few places where his design could, I think, be improved.   One, his arms. They're boring. Made of a bunch of things we've seen already. To amend this, see here (modeled by Antroz) – a set of Nuparu claws on the In
