The Poll Predicament
For many times, I've seen topics shut down in favor of the almighty poll. Being a premier member myself, when I find an unpolled topic, I poll it.
But there's still something about the poll system that bothers me, and I don't really see a way to fix it.
Occasionally, I see a topic that's closed in favor of a poll, but people are actually discussing in the topic. Rare, I know - especially in today's GD - but it does happen. I'm always a little sad when they get closed.
The main argument for the people in favor of closing the topic is that people can post in the poll stating their reasons, experiences, or what have you. There's nothing stopping them, it's true, but it never works out that way, mainly due to the fact that - *gasp* - posting in polls does not add to your post count. Shocking. Appalling.
Polls are great. They're a great solution to many of the one-post-and-done philosophy of the current General Discussion forum. But there are a few loopholes, one of which I'm mentioning here.
"Sumiki," you might say. "What if the admins changed it so that posting in the Voting Booth adds to your post count?"
No. Doing so would bring back the issue that they got rid of in General Discussion - the majority of one-post-and-done topics adding to post count. It would eliminate any discussion for the sake of post count increasing.
There's no real way around this issue, at least not a clear-cut one. It's a relatively minor issue, but it's one that I have noticed.
