What?

You don't like Halo?

I mean, liking or disliking it would mean I'd have to know something about it, which would mean caring about it in some form? I don't have any opinions about it whatsoever, positive or negative

I'll answer this question, because I feel the need to help.

Your avatar is a character you play as in the game Halo: Combat Evolved. His name is Master Chief.

Okay, the character's moniker isn't necessarily an important factor, but I've gotta say that "Master Chief" is the most hilariously insipid and banal name I've ever heard. How long did it take for them to think that one up?

But hey, like I said, probably isn't a big deal.

HALOS AND DOCTOR WHOM??

YOURE THE KOOLEST GUY I NO SMEEG

NUH UH SHINE TAHT HAS TO BE YOU; YOU HAVE THE BEST FONT EVAR IN YOUR SIG

They probably thought which military rank would suit a giant space warrior-man.

Now you're Master Chief Smeag...the name makes sense!

From what I read in the novels, it's a military rank.

I'd assumed so; that doesn't make it any less insipid. What kind of rank is 'Master Chief'? It's completely redundant. That sounds like the kind of things we used to make up in kindergarten: "This is my hero he has all the superpowers and his name is MASTER CHIEF" "No, my hero better! He's ULTRA LEADER and he's the STRONGEST!'

If you wanna get technical about it, then he's really a Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy and where am I going with this?

Either way, I like the avatar. It's fitting.

As someone who considers Halo and its protagonist to be incredibly overrated, I can't tell you how much I'm enjoying your comments, Smeag. :)

I believe the rank comes from the US Naval rank "Master Chief Petty Officer," and the Bungie people just shortened it a bunch. Though, from what I know/observed, a lot of people just refer to a MCPO informally as "Chief." Although I never really thought of it like a nickname, I just figured people called John "Master Chief" like how a lot of soldiers refer to a Sergeant as "Sarge" informally.

But eh, I enjoy Halo for mindless fun with friends. The story... it's kind of overrated, though. (I could be wrong on the top bit, as I'm just basing it off my experience with enlisted Navy personnel, and off Navy cadets who tend to refer to the MCPO as "Chief.")

Andrew you long-haired hippie. Criticize genuine-sounding military ranks after you actually know the first thing about the military.

And no, flower power doesn't count as military might.

Spot on Spink ^^ But most of the time he's just referred to as "Chief" in-game too.

As for Halo's story, the oddest thing is how they got the idea that putting 7ft aliens into purple and other flash-coloured armour would be intimidating XD

As for Smeag...if you don't like the term Chief, why not change it to Chef? You do like food, right? XD

Yeah, that makes more sense, but yeah I've always heard naval personnel refer to MCPOs merely as "Chief" and never as "Master Chief" (probably because they're conscious of how goofy it sounds?) - although I should note that I have much more familiarity with Army personnel than Navy personnel, so while my exposure is certainly not limited, I'm also not an "expert." I feels so juvenile for the the game company to promote him as the asinine-sounding 'Master Chief' when his name, full rank, or simply 'chief' would have been both more appropriate and less infantile-sounding. Dunno what they were thinking? Ah well.

Well, for starters, you wouldn't have been exposed to the Velvet Underground...

There is much untruth in this statement.

If you're implying that you would have exposed her to them if I didn't, be aware that when I sent you several songs by them some months ago, you didn't recognize the name and said you'd never heard of them (and that you'd heard covers of a couple of the ones I sent you, but didn't know the original band/didn't know they were covers). Which means I exposed you to the Velvet Underground, too. Which means, if not for me, Becca still wouldn't be exposed to them.
