I've heard way worse stuff coming out of the modern metal scene but it still doesn't strike me as anything special

more or less just feels kinda like heaviness for heaviness' sake

Yeah I understand what you mean, but for me it's pretty good since I don't really listen to much heavyish metal, but I'm starting to get into it (again).

I guess as a gateway into some of the more heavy and aggressive forms of metal it would be pretty good yeah

listening to it again, I do appreciate the Nile-esque riffage, particularly in the intro
