Rap

So I'm not the most musical person. I don't keep up with any bands and most of the time I just listen to whatever music comes my way. (I do keep up with OCRemix, but that hardly signifies familiarity with the music world in general.)

The point is, I really like quality rap, but don't know where to find it. Can anyone suggest some good rap? Popular, obscure, geeky, serious, whatever, so long as it's clean. My standards of "clean" are basically the same as BZP's, so if you can post it here, it's golden. Christian rap gets bonus points.

How come I never know about these different type of Christian music. First it was Christian Metal now Christian rap.

Anyway, I recommend some of Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and childish Gambino's "3005" from his album because the internet

Sadistik. not Christian, but don't let his violent-sounding name fool you - his lyrics are some of the most intelligent and emotional I've heard in the genre, and instrumentally his stuff is pretty chill and atmospheric and even a bit beautiful. his latest album Flowers for My Father was my favorite album of last year, and I'm not even that much of a hip-hop fan.

also, De La Soul if you want some good old-school hip-hop with a positive message and quirky style. their 1989 debut 3 Feet High and Rising is a masterpiece and classic of the genre as a whole.

here are a couple songs you can try:

Sadistik - "The Beast"

De La Soul - "Tread Water"

both of these artists have occasional profanity, particularly De La Soul on their later albums, but overall I'd say they're "cleaner" than most of what you'll find in hip-hop.

Christian variations of both styles have existed about as long as their secular counterparts, it's just they usually don't get much attention because they're usually trash.

I don't know much about rap and don't really have any artists I can recommend. With that said, I definitely respect quality rap. Remember back in the days on BZPower when everyone and their brother had one of THOSE sigs? The "98% of all teens have moved on to rap, copy and paste this if you're one of the 2% that still listens to real music" sigs? Yeah, I've always hated those. Not only does it belittle an entire genre of music and all the people who enjoy it, but it uses bogus statistics to make people feel like they're special or important because they've chosen to completely reject something their peers enjoy.

I won't pretend that I like all genres of music equally. There are some genres, artists, and songs that I prefer to listen to over others. That doesn't mean that anybody has the right to set up arbitrary standards for what is REAL music and what is not. Well, except Batman.

I wonder if the fact that those sigs has mostly disappeared is an internet-wide phenomenon or a sign that BZPower has matured as a community.
