Smash 4: Why Clones Are Not Bad

Clones suck

I want Agnes Oblige to be added as a fighter

Can we also please stop talking about clones too? They did not steal anyone's slot. At all. All they're meant to be is Filler added in by the dev team at the last second to pad out the roster size. If you don't like them, fine, but it's either them being in or the roster being three characters smaller.

I'm hoping you've seen that before. Clones are lazy and not as fun as an entirely new character. But what people NEED to understand is that taking out the clones wouldn't have given those slots to any other character. Wanna know why? Making a clone doesn't take HALF the time it does to make a character from scratch. As Sakurai said in a recent Famitsu column:

There are 3 fighters [Lucina, Dark Pit, and Doctor Mario] that are alternate models (clones) in the game. Each was originally a color variation, but during development, they were given balanced characteristics. Since their functionality had differences, forms were separated from each other. However, it was vital that this didn’t increase the required man-hours. Some relative tuning was sufficient as it wasn’t necessary to create balancing from scratch.

And here's a rather strange metaphor comparing clones to desserts:

This is like a free dessert after a luxurious meal that was prepared free of charge. In a restaurant with this type of service, I don’t think there’s anybody who would say, “Change this to a meat dish!!”

Yet, I’m told [to do that] about Smash Bros. But, I guess since a lot of them are children, it cannot be helped.

And his closing statement:

Could you please leave it to me to select [characters] with man-hours and costs in mind? However you look at it, the game is a great bargain buy as a result.

And that's that. In a perfect world, clones would not exist and the roster would have King K. Rool, Ridley, Issac, and about 1,000 more fan requested characters. But we live in a world of limited game development. They can only build so many new characters from scratch, but even then, clones are not added in until all the 'normal' slots are entirely filled. I look at clones as an extra from developers with just a liiiiittle bit of free time available.

Free of charge for $39.99?

Anyway, I couldn't care less about the presence of clones, my main complaint is that the good-bad ratio is the same 1:2 for newcomer clones as it is for full newcomers.

And another thing: They really couldn't have used the resources that went into making clones to at least de-clone Ganondorf?

I'd take a hundred clones if it meant we could get a story mode.

That's another can of worms entirely, but essentially there's no story mode because making custscenes are expensive and time consuming, and anyone who cares about the story could just look up videos on Youtube and you know, not have to purchase the game. So it's just more efficient to focus on balancing the game and such.

Well, the game is the main course. That costs $39.99. The clones are the extra dessert, as the player doesn't have to pay extra to cover their cost.

Explain what this ratio is? I'm not sure I understand your point there.

*sighs* Decloning Ganondorf is the same thing as making a new character. I figured that would be obvious. The only thing they could retain would be the model.

I'd like to point out cutting out all the clones wouldn't have led to more development time for other characters. You know how Melee had six clones? Sakurai said that in the time it took to develop all of them, they could have made ONE more unique character, aka Dedede, whom they already had a basic model and plan for. Now take into account that all the Melee clones had unique models developed at the last second, while the models for Lucina, Dark Pit, and Dr. Mario already existed due to them originally being costumes.

Either way, the clones did no harm, and nothing suffered because of their inclusion.

That makes sense.  Smash being a fighting game, I know that story isn't a top priority, I'm just wishing we had one since I enjoyed Subspace Emissary and like crossover stories in general.  If there's a story mode to clear, it feels like more of an accomplishment to me.

But, with there being only one series represented that I actually follow and playing far more RPGs than fighting games, I know that I'm not exactly the main target audience. :P

Dark Pit and Lucina, I definitely appreciate, since they help fill out the representation of their respective series. Dr. Mario, though? Meh. He doesn't even have a stage to himself, and is yet ANOTHER Mario-series character (and not even a distinct character at that, just being a differently-costumed Mario). If his spot had to have been filled by a clone I'd rather it have been someone from a less represented series, like Dark Samus (which would have provided a Metroid-series antagonist), Krystal or Wolf (who would have represented a Star Fox-series female character or antagonist respectively).

Frankly, when I first learned about move customization, I had figured they could just give Mario the Megavitamin as an alternate for his Fireball. But apparently Sakurai thought differently.

I can't really complain much, I've used two of the clones more then the characters they're clones of. Though I'm still disappointed that we didn't get a Dark Samus, even if she'd probably end up being a clone, and with the assist trophy, there's probably no chance we ever will. I just don't understand Dr. Mario. We already have an oversaturation of Mario characters, I feel that spot should have gone to a franchise with less representation.
