At this point we're on the verge of the release for Smash Wii U, so if you don't know the entire roster at this point, this is on you.

Duck Hunt Profile

Species: Dog + Duck

Series: Duck Hunt

First Appearance: Duck Hunt (NES, 1985)

Favourite Appearance: Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (3DS, 2014)

Party: 1st

Known For: Being old, being annoying, being the ultimate troll, being the only four-legged fighter in SSB4, being a dog, being a duck, being both a dog and a duck

Excitement Factor: 8/10 - I've had ample opportunities to use Duck Hunt by now (which still doesn't make any sense as a fighter name but whatever), and I really enjoy it. In fact, I enjoy it enough to not care about the fact that this is yet another character that nobody was asking for (I mean seriously, everybody wants Ridley but we get characters like Wii Fit Trainer and Duck Hunt instead?). Anyway.

And so they soared through the open air, as I tumbled in the dirt below them.

Well, if Ivysaur returned, there'd be two four legged fighters in SSB4....

Also, I'm pretty sure Wii Fit Trainer and Duck Hunt are deliberate decisions. I mean, when you've got as many character requests as Sakurai, you may wanna have some fun and pick characters that NOBODY seriously suggested. Hence why he's the ultimate troll. =P

Well, there's also the fact that fighters like Wii Fit Trainer and Duck Hunt, while seemingly out of nowhere, represent significant parts of Nintendo's history. Wii Fit is a VERY successful franchise so while not many people wanted a representative, it still makes some sense to have one. And Duck Hunt, like R.O.B. and Mr. Game & Watch (and to a certain extent, Pac-Man) is a "retro" character who basically represents a specific point in Nintendo's history and the overall history of video games.

Add in the fact that Sakurai cares more about fighters who bring something unique to the table in terms of their play style and behavior, and there are a lot of benefits to characters like this besides just "trolling".
