When I search for a scholarly article on the Abyssinian Crisis and Italo-Ethiopian relations, what I really wanted was

THE HITTITE NAME FOR 'GARLIC'

Krzysztof Tomasz Witczak

Acta Orientalia Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae, Vol. 59, No. 3 (2006), pp. 341-345

...Department of Linguistics and Indo-
European
Studies, ul. Lipowa 81, PL-90568 Lodz, Poland e-mail: ktw@uni.lodz.pl In this article the origin of Hittite suppiwashar 'onion' (liter. 'pure garlic') is carefully discussed. The author suggests that there were two différent terms for 'garlic' in the Indo-

Ah, JSTOR. At once the most and least useful tool for finding stuff.

You've got to specify the relevant field, otherwise you'll pick up linguistics or literature articles, as opposed to history.  Better still if you know a particular journal.  Also, try removing the word "European" from your search, or enclose it and the noun it modifies in quotation marks.

Excellent advice.
