Well those aren't really reboots. The former is just a really convoluted timeline (or multiverse if you want to be technical) and the latter is just a multiverse.

Yeah, mirroring elements from the original does not in imply that they're like the same elements but far in the future or something. It seems a bit ridicusilly.

I wouldn't say the door is closed on any possible ties to the old continuity, but I do think that if there are ties, they will be subtle ones, and I would rather they be a surprise than speculate endlessly on how the universes MIGHT be connected.

I feel like Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire did a great job crafting a connection to the previous Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire games in a way that didn't require one continuity having to answer to all the baggage from the other:

The new story team should be well aware of what led to the demise of G1—an unreasonably long backstory—and seek to avoid it. The shout-outs are nice, but if they begin tying in multiple universes in a way that's not a cheap easter egg for the old-timers, then at that point G2 would have gone the way of G1.

I guess the point is that a convoluted story isn't necessarily a good story. I hope G2 goes for the latter and not the former.
