I am happy to see Matoro die. And that's saying a lot, since he and Nuju are competing for the role of "my favorite character," and both have leading roles in my epic.

 

His death was emotional in the comic scans. Do you realize how much that's saying; how much it implies for the same event in the books or the actual comic? Everyone dies eventually, as Omi so dismally pointed out, and LEGO made this death emotional enough to matter, but not so emotional that his death would seem to have been in vain. And remember, there are still noble Matoran like Nixie, Toudo, or Kopeke to carry on the running of... wait, no. You're not getting any Frost Rising spoilers from me. :P

He saved Mata Nui's life. He gave his friends the ability to breathe air again (something many of us were desperate to see, but for which few of us had formulated a method by which it could be done).

 

Moreover, he lived a good life. If they had killed a less important character, would it be so easy to say that? Would it be so easy to say that he had left his mark on the world? I say they did a good job of choosing which character ought to die to save Mata Nui.
