They Could Be Flashier

For some of the most powerful beings to control their elements in the world, the Nuva aren't really acting like it this year. The Phantoka did have some nice moments, like Kopaka pummelling Mutran with ice or Pohatu conjuring boulders out of nowhere, but even those weren't half as powerful as what we saw the Nuva do back in 2002 and 2003.

One of my first thoughts after we learned about the Phantoka half of this year was Lewa and Kopaka teaming up to conjure a raging blizzard, or all three flying in a circle to make a cyclone of rocks and ice. Lewa, like Hahli last year, is surrounded by his element – he could beat up the Makuta with wind blasts and cyclones and some creativity, knock off the Makuta's Shadow Matoran eyes, blow the leeches away from everyone when they attack...

Or maybe he could do something like Iron Man's repulsor blasts (or whatever their proper name is) and use a concentrated blast of air to throw someone backwards.

And it's not like Kopaka and Pohatu don't have similar amounts of power either. In MoL, Kopaka knocked three Rahkshi out of the air with a wave of his sword and then froze a lake solid in an instant. He can't do the latter two thousand feet or so off the ground, but he and Pohatu could encase the Makuta in ice and stone and make them fall out of the air... That wouldn't last long, since they could just use Fragmentation and Disintegration to free themselves, but it could buy the Nuva time or keep the Makuta distracted if they did it repeatedly.

I would love to see Kopaka just swing his arm through the air and have a dozen spikes of ice fly outward from him... Pohatu could do that too.

The Mistika have a couple good moments too, but their battles with the Makuta left me wanting a lot more. Into the spoiler tags!

The best part was Onua making the mud explode onto the swarm of Bitils in the comics. Second-best was Gali using water to punching through a tangle of roots to reach the keystone and then making quicksand under Gorast.

But still, there's much to be desired. Onua captured by Bitil(s)? Even when he's immobilized, telepathically make the earth explode under them, create a sinkhole, bury his captors, break Bitil's concentration and thus his control over Onua, and then fly away.

Gali confronted by Gorast? I have this great image of Gali leaping into the air, water flying up with her, then using streams of water to batter Gorast and finally burying her under a tidal wave. All the while she'd use her Nynrah blaster to make a shield against any of Gorast's attacks...

And Tahu against Krika should have been easy. Even while Krika is freezing him slowly, he should be able to call up his own Fire power and warm himself, then actually make it so that he's heating the are as Krika is cooling it, and finally unleash a firestorm against him and wrap Krika in white-hot fires. Cold might be his greatest weakness, but he's a Toa Nuva.

And then there's the problem of their Kanohi Nuva. If what I've heard is correct, their ability to switch masks is impeded by the forces that guard Karda Nui. I have mixed emotions on this. I love the idea, since Karda Nui is supposed to be well-protected against outsiders, but at the same time it cripples one of the Nuva's greatest assets – and they need all the power they can get this year. If they could just summon their Hau when they each need it, half their problems would be solved.

(To ward off comments that might still happen even with this warning: this is an observation and a list of imaginations more than it is a complaint. Treat it as that.)

Oh, would anyone else mind reviewing Learn to Fly? It's really not that long...

I want to read that story.

Serious, Tahu fought Kopaka to a stalemate.

And since when do Makuta have cold powers anyway?

Since they were mutated.

I have to admit, I'm pretty impressed with the Nuva thus far -- you can definitely just feel the difference in experience from the Inika/Mahri. As you said, Kopaka defeating Mutran was one of his most awesome moments. In Swamp of Secrets and the new comic, Onua has a number of great moments, like exploding the ground beneath Bitil and his duplicates and completely mashing Gorast as he saved Gali (sounds more epic in the book than it looks in the comic).

Eh, I'm just happy that we have them back in the main story at all :)

I agree. I plan on someday simply rewriting some of the cooler scenes from over the years, one of which the epic battles between the Nuva and Makuta. I agree on most of your accounts, but the thing I look most forward to is if in the Final Battle, Tahu and Pohatu team up against the Makuta, Pohatu firing hollow stone spikes with tahu compressing extreme heat inside of them, creating an instant missile on impact. That would be WIN.

One of the first things I thought when I heard about Kopaka this year- in the air, flies above the Makuta and make random ice spikes shoot out like tentacles to ultimately take down the Makuta.

It is a bit disappointing... Tahu was being drained and all he could do was heat up the ground? Hello, where's the twirly blade fiery tornado thing that blows Krika halfway across Karda Nui? What happened to Pohatu encasing a Makuta in stone in midair and making them fall to their doom? Gali and Onua are in their element and they get taken down by a Makuta each. And a very weakened Makuta at that. Onua can just make a mud explosion? Borrow a leaf from Thok's book and make an earth hand grab the Makuta in question and send them for a ride. Gali? What happened to the Tarakava/Nui Jaga move? Make water erupt from underneath the offending Makuta and knock them silly? And she was just a Mata then. And a novice one at that who only knew her own name.

Lewa? Come on, he's Lewa. And he's in air. All he can do is cause one measly tornado. WHY?

I, for one, am disappointed in the lack of sheer power this year. Powered-down Makuta and Toa who can't even make a decent blast.

Also, their personalities- why did they tone them down? What happened in a month to make this happen? What they need is their good old sides back- "I work alone." "By choice or because no one can stand you?"

"As long as the underground waters obey my commands- it is Makuta and his creatures who need protection!"

"More Rahi nightmares on the wing. I believe I have had enough of this!"

What happened to that?

One of my favorite scenes from a comic was the one where Kopaka froze Tahu's fire cage when the Nuva were testing their powers. Where is that now?

They might be giants.

But they are not.

Kopaka was a lot... no pun intended... cooler back then. Especially since he very nearly took down Tahu in a few seconds.

I agree perfectly... one thing with which I'm discontent this year is the reducing of the Makuta to the same size/power level as a Toa. Of course, I'm not big on the idea of making Takanuva a giant and almost Makuta-like on power level, but that's a different argument for a different day.

Essentially, if we're supposed to believe that a Toa could hold out in a one-on-one duel with a Makuta, they should at least have all their Kanohi.

I think the Nuva are doing fine this year without their Suva. Anyway, the idea of Suva, while it has some minor uses, never seemed as important to the Nuva as it did to the Mata, especially since they already can share their mask powers.

The use of elemental powers seems sufficient to me as well. Tahu's signal in the latest comic looks so totally ownage... And don't even get me started on some of the powers the Nuva demonstrated in BIONICLE Legends 10. 'Twas a totally worthwhile read.

I really wish we could see more channeling of elemental powers through their Toa tools, although admittedly the only time we've seen that since the Toa Nuva was the Toa Inika (and even among the Nuva, we never saw Pohatu channel stone power through his claws and probably won't see it any more through his propellordrillclaws). Still, I have warmed up to the Mistika tools almost entirely on the degree of ownage in their ability to channel the elemental powers, and I hope we see at least a bit more of that action (assuming, of course, that Gali Mistika even has a Toa tool, which I hope considering the similarity in shape between her hooks and her new crosshairs).

On the subject of Toa Tools, the concept behind Takanuva's new tool is awesome. However, I'm still trying to figure out how he carries it before he gets bigger when it probably is big to begin with. Perhaps his growth in story isn't as dramatic as his growth in sets, which I hope since he grew so much more than an Av-Matoran did (i.e. he grew a full bio over average Toa height while an Av-Matoran only is an eighth of that height above average).

EDIT: As for knocking the Shadow Matoran from the Makuta Phantoka's backs, I think the Nuva Phantoka had considered that-- they quickly decided against it because if the Matoran got badly hurt it would go against much of what Toa stand for. Of course, I could be remembering wrong, but I'm pretty certain the idea came up at one point.
