Monster Mystery Powerpoint Art Contest

Here's what I've settled on for the next blog contest. Invent a mysterious and terrifying Bionicle monster. I will write an adventure mystery short story using the winning monster as the antagonist. :)

I'll set it on Metru Nui during 2006-2008. The Matoran hero from my RPG, Hujo, will be the protagonist. He will have to try to figure out the identity of this monster as it wreaks havoc while trying to remain mysterious and unseen by its victims. Similar to the LOST Monster. It will be another bonus Paracosmos short story.

But what IS the monster? That's up to you guys. :)

Here's what I'm looking for:

1) Make an image of your monster in Powerpoint and post it here. Here's my guides on powerpoint art again:

Powerpoint Art Guides:
Vector Art In Powerpoint: Quality, Inexpensive, Easy
Coolifying With Powerpoint Vector Art

2) Tell me about its powers, motives, etc. in a bio in your post.

3) Please note that this has to be a bad guy.

4) As per Bones Blog tradition, you may enter up to three different monsters. Only one monster will win out of all the entries, though.

5) No, you can't copy off the LOST Monster. :P

The short story will be posted in the Library and in a blog entry. The winner will be revealed through the story -- I'll make it as mysterious as I can. :P I will judge both on the art and on quality of the story, and I will announce which ones I thought came close, with commentary on them and the winner, in a seperate entry.

Contest is open again until noon next Wednesday (Dec 17)..

[Deadline extended two weeks.]

[Deadline extended another week.]

Have fun!

Here are three random example monsters, with bios in spoiler tags:

Foliage Monster Hiding
Foliage Monster

Bio:
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
This giant mutant Fikou Spider blends in with foliage, thanks to its green fur. Shown here with eyes open, it usually closes its narrow eyes and senses prey by ground vibrations and sound. When its prey comes near, it strikes! As a normal Fikou spider, it was released from the Archives 1000 years ago during the Great Cataclysm. Visorak venom mutated it -- eventually it settled into this form. The venom drove it insane, and it has a paranoid, frantic personality. It was also given Mute power, so its victims' cries for help cannot be heard. Now that the city is being repopulated, its paranoia has driven it to capture Matoran with a vengeance. Its venom renders the prey mute and disoriented -- it usually imprisons them in a deep hole to be eaten later. For now, it has enough Rahi trapped to feed on, but will the Matoran be rescued in time?

Nightwindow Monster

Bio:
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Origins unknown, this monster hides underwater at day, but at night it hovers outside Metru Nui skyscrapers. It sends blue energy tendrils right through window glass, and destroys anything in its path. It eats fish, so its attacks have nothing to do with food. It is an intelligent and evil being who can sense fear. It doesn't feed on fear -- it merely enjoys sensing fear. At all times it tries hard to avoid being identified -- its attacks are sudden, and last mere seconds. It leaves furniture, machines, and inner walls in ruin in its wake. Thus far no serious injuries have happened, but nobody knows when it will go too far.

Rhotuka Serpent

Bio:
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Recently, a Makuta was spotted by Takanuva off Metru Nui's shores. Soon after, bursts of light began attacking Metru Nui's structures, weakening them even as the Matoran tried to rebuild. At first, some worried that Takanuva himself had turned against them, but eventually the bursts were found to come from strange yellow Rhotuka. The spinners were designed differently from normal Rhotuka, allowing them to maneuver fast and quiet through ground plants long distances before flying up to attack their actual targets. This made it nearly impossible to find out where the Rhotuka were coming from. In fact, they came from the Rhotuka Serpent, a new creation of that Makuta. In addition to slowing the rebuilding, the serpent has a connection to the Makuta attacking Karda Nui, draining away some of the light that hits them when a Midak sphere is fired at them. The main benefit to the Makuta is that when the mystery is finally solved, it will only reinforce the idea that the Makuta don't want Mata Nui awakened... which is exactly what they want the Toa to think...

bonesiii_monster_3.png

This monster came into being shortly after the Toa Nuva arrived on Mata Nui. It became prominent throughout the Metru Nui area, though its name remains unknown among Matoran tribes. The monster is much known throughout many regions of the Matoran Universe. It has been known to be a merciless fighter. Its one motive is the amplified scent of blood it's able to get. This is its one and only way of hunting, though it works very well. The monster is has no known weaknesses. It's undefeatable in battle. Any being who's tried to defeat has gruesomely failed, only resulting in death. Many archivists in Onu-Metru have captured some of these dangerous creatures to study for a weakness. They've only gotten close, but they are still in the midst of a great discovery.

gartana.png

The Gartana is a sapient, violent, mist-like creature that is capable of controlling any mechanical object it comes in to contact with. Its substance hovers inches above the ground, radiates a purple light and comes from its helmet. A machine controlled by the Gartana will give off a faint, violet glow. It has been seen abducting various machines for an unknown reason. One Matoran theorized that the Gartana is building something, but the why still remains unanswered. No one knows where the Gartana comes from, only that it wants to go back.

cazek_wasp.png

The Cazek Wasp is a tiny hive insect that is hostile to intruders in its territory. Extreme caution should be used around its hive for it will swarm and attack any who get too close. One sting alone is relatively harmless, but multiple stings can cause a victim to become mutated due to the Hordika venom contained in the stinger. You can recognize the Cazek Wasp by the loud, thunderous humming sound made by its wings before it attacks. It follows the Visorak horde for it uses the webbing left by the spiders to create its hive.

makutawolf.png

Created by a Makuta whose name has long been forgotten, the Makuta Wolf is a creature of fear and hatred with only one thought, kill and destroy. It is a beast many doubt the existence of. Several Matoran have, in the past, sought to prove the existence of the Makuta Wolf, they have not been seen since. What is accepted by the believers is that it has a near Matoran-level intelligence and that the Makuta Wolf only hunts at night and strikes from the shadows. The belief is that the Makuta Wolf will turn down an easier meal for its preferred prey; Matoran. Those who claim to have lived through an encounter with this creature catch only glimpses of it before it returns to the shadows. Here above is an artist's interpretation of the Makuta Wolf's appearance based off of the eye-witness accounts.

Can I make my entry's background transparent with GIMP?

If yes, here it is:

the_mine_dweller.png

This, the Mine Dweller, is an ancient Rahi, created by Makuta Mutran near the beginning of the Universe. Considered a failure, it was kicked off of Destral onto the Southern Continent. This rejection maddened the Mine Dweller, sending it into an everlasting rage.

It lives in darkness, staying to the shadows and awaiting its moment to strike innocent Matoran.

NEW MONSTER:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

cerebrus.png

Created by Makuta Mutran for espionage, Cerebrus is a parasitic mind controller, powerful enough to sway even the strongest willed into its command. This, however, is its only strength, and it needs a host to feed off of. It cannot move, and instead relies on hosts to bring from place-to-place.

Cerebrus controls its hosts by hacking into the spinal cord, stretching its tail through the body into the brain, where it taps into all the information stored by the host, including subconscious thoughts, learned knowledge, and memories. It, while attached to the host, can control muscle motions, vocals, and most thoughts performed by the host, allowing Cerebrus to change the host's memories of the time he was controlled. Cerebrus, after he is finished with his host, he will bring them to a brutal death through insanity and starvation before moving onto another.

While being powerful in that sense, Cerebrus is still visible from outside its host, allowing external temperatures and attacks aimed at it to hurt and kill it.

Eh, I don't really see a "spread-wrath-without-being-seen" aspect to the entries...

Ironicles.

I don't think unseen is a good word choice to describe any of the monsters(unless one of them had the ability to become invisible). Unnoticed or unrecognizable would probably be better. :shrugs:

Or maybe difficult to believe the existence of; like Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, or Keetongu. :P

Still, I was thinking that some unlucky Matoran would go into some random place alone and people would fine him dead without any trace or something.

The contest is about the monster when it's revealed, the "unseen-wrath-speading" is going to depend on how Bonesiii writes the story.

I think Ary's point is that it helps if your bio explains how your monster creates the "cause-unknown-wrath" effect. :) All three of my example monsters have some way to stay unidentified in the bio. Also, the why of it helps.

You don't absolutely have to specify that, as I can fill in blanks, but it will go some way towards winning if you do. :)

Nuju Metru -- It is a bit weird for "Bionicle style." :P Maybe modify it to add pistons and the like? It's a great Castle bad guy, though. :P

Edit: Just realized I forgot to put the example bios in this entry -- that might have made it a bit unclear. :P Put in now.

Ah, irony. I already have practically everything about my entry covered.

EDIT: Is it possible to move the due date to the 28th (Friday)? I have practically no time to work on this until the break. And I REALLY want to enter.

Can we color the monster with something other than Powerpoint?

If no then I'm not entering. :P[/threat]

Hm... I'm definately willing to consider it; actually, how about moving it ahead two weeks to December 9? There's so few entries as is anyways; many might need the time. No objections from anybody?

Like what? It's so easy to color in powerpoint. :P Lemme know what you have in mind and I'll think about it... >__>

Like, umm.. we draw the beastie in PP, and then we fill it in with color using Photoshop...

I think Photoshop would be a tad too high-quality to be fair to the other contestants. :P

:(

Fine whatever. :P

I'll enter. After seeing many other entries, I most likely won't win.

Lord Bolite

lord_bolite.png

On Mata Nui, after a horrible chemical accident, a Matoran named Bolite was mutated into a crab-shaped creature. When he returned home, his best friend, Moran, stared at him in fear. Moran took out his spear. Bolite shivered, and refused to fight. But Moran began to attack. Defending himself, Bolite blocked the blows, instead of fighting, as Bolite is a pacifist. Rage, and tears filled his eyes until Bolite became filled with rage and grabbed Moran's neck. He choked Moran until he became unconscious. Bolite crushed Moran alive, nearly killing him. Bolite was still filled with rage. and swore revenge on every Matoran because every Matoran he knew betrayed him, and were most likely killed by Bolite. It has been 20 years, and now he is Lord Bolite, a homicidal maniac who murders anybody who looks at him in fear. After his 2,000th murder, he began to dwell in a hole, where he would grab and kill anybody who walks by.

The Krirox are creatures of Shadow, named after their creators, Makuta Krika and Makuta Chirox. They were originally intended to serve as protectors of the Matoran of the Tren Krom Peninsula. Fierce by nature, and possessing all the skills required to make an excellent predator, they will not let any being get in their way once they have set their sights on an objective. All for the better, though, owing to the treacherous conditions of the Peninsula. However, a serious flaw went undiscovered in their design, and it resulted in them 'malfunctioning', causing them to occasionally attack the Matoran, instead of protecting them. Their eyes have a mild hypnotizing effect, affecting mainly those who are weak of mind and will; mostly small Rahi and the occasional Matoran. Its spikes contain a venom, varying in its effects, from paralysis to confusion. What makes it even more terrifying to the Matoran, is it's stealthiness. It can sneak up on unsuspecting victims; it's stealth rivaled only by a wearer of the Kanohi Volitak. It's only weaknesses, however, are sonic and magnetic attacks, which the Matoran use to their advantage.

Bones, my entire entry depends on moving the deadline back...

As in, moving the deadline two weeks forward? My entry depends on that too, or there'll be some real quality difference between the first and second half of my entry.
