Am I The Only One Surprised By This?

I learned today that the song "Happy Birthday To You" is technically copyrighted in the United States until 2030. Which is why you never hear it on TV or in movies, only variations or songs like "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow."

Am I the only one who didn't know this until now? o_O

I actually knew that.

It's also why you can only find the sheet music for song it's derived from without copyright infringement :S

Sorta knew. The guys at homestarrunner.com had to remove it from one of their toons when they put it on a DVD, and changed it to Hot Cross Buns. Which can't be copyrighted, I guess...should check up on that one, too. :P

I wonder if all those (annoying) restaurant staffers who disrupt my dinner at places like Ruby Tuesday's, Applebee's and similar places realize they're breaking my ears AND the law.

Mebbe because Happy Birthday is licensed by Warner Music group and WB also has the rights to the Batman Begins movie? :\ Dunno.

That's really weird. My question is "why?"

Come to think of it, I haven't heard it on TV in ages. Creepy that they copyrighted an age old song like that.
