Set Design

Most of it we already knew, some we didn't, and it was all fun to comment on. And if you know me well enough then you should already be able to expect my responses.

So finally we know why the pins have been changed.

-< :s: >-

I'm just glad I can finally say "I told you so" to everyone who I've argued with about the pins for the last few years. Nobody would believe me when I said it was so they wouldn't get lost and kids could distinguish them.

I know, right? We've known this since BrickFest '06!

Wait, so they made the pins bright so little kiddies could tell the difference, but they made the element's colors darker to make it seem less "young"?

HOORAY PARADOX.

LOL. I want brighter colors back too. Why wouldn't those appeal to older kids?

And what about lime green and white? And Keetorange?

MTJ: And we also need to make it different from the year before.

Well, bright green (like Lewa Nuva and Lerahk) would certainly be different now!

Question: Why have the basic Inika/Piraka torsos been used so often in the last few years? Why don’t we see any new torso designs?

JD: Originally, they were built specifically to reduce the amount of actual building you have to do. Research said the kids didn’t want to build quite so much.

But this is LEGO!!! The company's core is about building! This makes no sense to me. LEGO should be promoting building and creativity, right?

JD: Piraka torso was meant to be used without armor; Inika torso was meant to have armor. That was the rationale I had for designing both of them.

But they're different sizes...no comparison please. A stud in height can make a difference.

On weapons:

EF: When they’re not colored, it makes it easier to use the same element elsewhere.

That's right, which is why I don't mind it as much. But Bara Magna weapons still rock.

On purple:

MTJ: I think it’s really because of the elemental powers, we already had six main colors chosen for the sets.

Wouldn't it be awesome to branch out the elements?

Question: Why did the brown color sets (like stone) change to yellow and orange?

Answers: JD: The brown didn’t sell well.

We already knew that....

Thanks for the interview, Bink, and answers, designers.

One thing that annoys me was that Mata green was jammed together in a general question about Mata colors. My point: mata red and blue have made a slight comeback, even if they're not the primary color, so why not give bright green a chance as a secondary color, even if its just for lime. That was the one question I really wanted an answer too... oh well. (Especially since they got direct questions about purple and brown... we already knew about those colors and their problems)

:music:

We already knew, yes. *sigh*

I just realized something else. If the (older) fans like "darker" colors, then why come out with TAN instead of more brown? Hmm?

These newer sets... I guess they're selling better to mass amounts of kiddies. But, personally, I've been given NO reason to buy multiples of Canister sets anymore.

Buy a set. BOOM. Got hands that were missing on my mocs since Throwbots.

... ... ...ok, and? Maybe a weapon? What about all the fun, tiny parts I want so I can combine set after set into something awesome? It's just not there.

There's certainly something to be said about that one place online where you can buy individual pieces.

Buy two hands for like 40cents a pieces and I've just ELIMINATED any reason to spend either 7 or 13 dollars.

Gone are the days when I'd have a shopping cart filled with 50 mask packs and 10 Lewa.

Oh my god. Got a great idea. I must be a genius.

Make the pins in a whole bunch of different colors so official sets don't look ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS WITH BLUE PINS ruining them.

I have not a hand with adequate size to execute the most appropriate facepalm to their lack of simple logic.

If they don't want to build, and they have LEGO sets, something is obviously very wrong. It's like selling jigsaw puzzles with less pieces so you don't have to build them. Who in their right mind would build something they did not want to?!

It's ridiculous that making pins bright for ease is somehow at odds with making colors darker for popularity. After all, if there's anything I know about young kids, it's that they want to seem older. However, nothing makes them more hateful of something that screams "older kids" as that something being way too hard for them. My little bro, for instance, used to accuse video games, board games, and card games of "cheating" when he lost or failed to understand the intricacies of the rules. Certainly more than enough fury to cause a kid to abandon LEGO sets entirely.

On a related note, I happen to find the colored pins immeasurably useful, and looking back to my days before making an intricate sorting system for parts I can remember having horrible frustration with finding the right types of pins and such in a box of black parts. Just because a kid isn't obsessed with LEGO toys like many of us are doesn't mean that they are foolish or wimpy for not wanting to dig for long stretches of time for the part they need.

Meanwhile, in regard to the tan, you fail to observe something obvious-- LEGO switched to the darker colors a long time ago. Since then, it's entirely possible that they found some reason to try with brighter (but still "earthy" like the dark shades) colors. Isn't the copious amount of lime in the recent past evidence enough? The rules of set sales are not clear-cut, any more than any other science of public opinion.

I think the set design answers from today made it perfectly clear why BIONICLE is better today than it was in 2001. Others can disagree, but I am ashamed how many people use this info to blame other fans for BIONICLE's downfall. Please bear in mind that a change that makes no sense to you usually makes lots of sense in the eyes of other fans, and both can be "right"-- it's just a matter of set designer (and fan) priorities.

I like the agreement I'm getting.

Aanchir, I don't know how to reply to your comments anymore. Especially this one since I didn't pose quite an argument so anything I say in response to you would be filling in any gaps left over from my entry and your reply. And I love that Vorox has TAN, so I'm not complaining. (I'll still continue to complain about green though. Seriously, if they want something new, replace lime with green, and it would match the environment look they're going for even better than lime.)

You and Roa both like being able to immediately find the blue pins. So do I when making a quick WIP, but then I go back and replace them because they look so darn terrible! (Unless it's a blue MOC. Or a red MOC and I'll use red rods.)

I hate the internet and lack of emotion in words...that's probably half the problem in discussions.
