Actually, the two screws holding it together were still there.

It's all a conspiracy!! Late at night, someone tunneled underneath the mailbox and attached a metal spike to the bottom of the post. They stayed there until the next day. As they heard your mower passing overhead, they jerked hard in one direction on the spike they had attached, causing the mailbox to break. Then they quickly detached the spike, filled the hole in the post with fake wood, went back down the tunnel, and filled the tunnel in with soil again.
