C D's Vs Digital

You know how your parents probably prefer vinyl records over CD's? I feel I'm the same way towards CD's maybe, preferring to buy the CD instead of downloading it. I like having the CD, album art, case and whatnot.

I brought my small stereo and CD rack to college, but now that I'm back I realized I didn't use it all that often. I used my computer for most of my music listening. In realization, I don't really need my stereo next year if I don't want to. It would save space, along with the lack of CD rack.

Now, if I don't really use my CD player anymore, at least while at school, then why don't I download songs as well. Aren't albums something like $10 each, instead of the $15-$20 I'd pay at Borders? Or I can download a bunch of songs from various albums and not worry about the whole thing. (And then burn them to CD?) But again, I like actually having the CD, even though times are changing.

Maybe I'll have to try it eventually, but for now I think I'll stick to sales at Borders.

You know, I can imagine this being our version of the parallel with the old generation. (i.e: Our Parents v Us: Vinyl v CD; Us v Our Kids: CD v Digital)

That's what I said with my first sentence...

I'm kind of the same way, although I prefer playing music on my MP3 player due to easy carry-around-itude. For most of last year my brother and I would alternate carrying the CD case and player to school (though he ended up with them on most days since he had more periods available for listening). However, we got iPods for Christmas and found them much more convenient (and in snazzy colors, too!). I still prefer CDs, however, as the ideal format in which to purchase music.

...Which once again makes me wonder what stores are apt to carry the new Cryoshell album once it's released. Unlike BIONICLE books (my most schedule-bound bookstore purchases these days), we don't have a clear release date on that, so it remains to be seen when, where, and how that is planned for release.

It's funny that despite this "digital age" that we're in, there's been a huge comeback of vinyl records. Like, I was at Fred Meyer one day with some friends a couple months back, and we found a ton of recent albums that were being released on vinyl along with some rereleases of older albums as well. Kind of cool, as you can only find so many vinyl albums at thrift stores.

Yeah, that's the other thing, with an iPod or Zune. I'm going to get one to replace my current Creative MuVo (the 2 GB capacity is killing me), and once I do I was thinking of getting an iHome or the like. But I realized I might not really need it at school, so what's the rush?

It is almost surprising that Cryoshell is releasing into stores. Granted, alternative rock (those bands that are not on the radio) do it all the time, but they have a fan base from their local gigs. Cryoshell, well, only the Bionicle community is really into them, it seems, IMO, and and considering their target audience...and also considering their music does not appeal to everyone...I think they're taking the wrong stance. But let's not get into that. They probably would be fine just being digital.

@Nukaya: Yeah, I remember hearing about some bands releasing on vinyl as well and thinking it was pretty weird...

Well, I myself personally like buying individual songs from an artist, because most of the time there's one good song on an album, one or two others that you haven't heard before but are okay, and the rest are bleh. I'll just get the songs I know I like.

But, yeah, even though I buy them off the Internet, I always burn them onto CDs. In fact, before college, my primary listening device was a CD player, even when everybody else had already dipped into the iPod madness. I only switched to an iPod when I got one as a present and my CD player broke down. But still, it's nice to have a solid collection of songs stored on CD in case somebody *ahem* steals your laptop!

I feel the same way. I guess I just like having solid proof that I own the CD, instead of all the information being digital.

@CF: I agree with your view on Cryoshell: I don't think they have a big enough fanbase to be releasing in stores. Seeing as only BIONICLE fans know about them, and seeing as BIONICLE is a toy line aimed at 6-12-year-old kids, I doubt they're going to be very popular. What they need is more exposure; they need more audiences exposed to their music.

I'm a fan of CD's. I've only bought like two albums off amazon. I like knowing that if something happens to my computer I can rip most of my music off the CDs again.

I like idea of CD's and physical music, but it just takes too much time to collect a respectable collection, and once you have it, it takes up too much room.

Digital is nice also, and with iTunes and an iPod Touch, the album arts and easy navigation is beautiful.

However there is always the chance of everything you own getting deleted. :fear:

Just a note: Just because only BIONICLE fans currently know about Cryoshell doesn't mean that they don't intend to do more marketing once the album is finished. And I don't have concrete knowledge that they'll be releasing into stores, but I somehow don't think they'd make enough revenue off of online purchases from LEGO fans alone to compensate for the cost of re-recording all their previous songs. If BIONICLE fans were their exclusive audience, after all, they wouldn't need to re-record-- the fans would have all the more reason to want the versions that appeared on the commercials.
