Steamicle: Froggy Buiding Contest #2

Poll Alpha is up. VOTE!

Deadline on Thursday!!!!!!! High noon EST. Enter!!!!

The ChocolateFroggy Bloggy Building Contest #2 (or at least I think it's #2 and not 3): Steamicle

Just recently I saw my first ever "Bionicle Steampunk" MOC. I wasn't entirely impressed as mostly the whole reason it was being called steampunk was because it was brown and grey.* Your job is to fix this problem.

Your goal:

Build a Bionicle Steampunk MOC that actually looks steampunkish by function and not (solely) by color.

More info:

*Steampunk on Wikipedia

*You will see that most MOCs are brown (for wood) and grey and/or metalics (for metal), but no one is limited to those colors! In fact, there have been colored steampunk MOCs out there, because, really, inventors probably had a can of paint lying around.

I can not stress enough of having it look functional instead of just fitting in. (This doesn't mean it actually has to move with the turn of a gear though.) The really good steampunk MOCs actually look like they do something.

Basic BBCC rules apply. (Especially the 75/25% ratio, as I really want to see what can be done in Bionicle terms.)

What to MOC: Toa, sure, because I like humanoids. Manas strike me as something that are already machine so would look cool steampunkified. But hey, go ahead and make something up that could be thrown into the Bionicle universe.

Yes I realize that the Mata Nui saga characters were already more machine than muscle/etc, but that's what helps so much. Simply re-imagining Bionicle with a steam feel.

Size? I don't want anything HUGE, but I don't want to limit you too much. I hear the Axalara was 2 feet long, so let's keep it under that. A reasonable sized MOC.

I'm talking too much aren't it? (If I seem to have too many rules/limits tell me what you want me to be more lenient on and I'll try.)

Prizes! First, second, and third place winners get to choose, in that order, between an orange Vahi, a poisoned Hau Nuva, and a Free the Band patch. (I'll ship out of country.)

Deadline: MOCs must be submitted in this blog entry by Thursday, November 12, noon EST. Voting will start soon after and conclude in time for me to ship out the prizes during Thanksgiving break.

Form of submittal:

Your Name

Your MOC's Name

Link to primary MOC picture (no changing midway)

Questions here, of course. Happy building!

*Yes, I realize that there are some really good steampunk MOCs that are more color than visible function, and I'll probably do that myself, but still...

PS: If you upload your MOC to Flickr and send me a PM with your link, you also get one free Internet.

I am interested.

Of course, I am a horrible procrastinator.

That's OK. I gave you three weekends to work on it.

If I join in the competition, I might leave it off until the last week or so, so I might not. Another factor for me to consider is my lack of Steampunk-looking parts. At least I'll have the inspiration from listening to Abney Park. ^_^

Fabulous contest - I'll do my best to enter. :)

Although it's voting based, do we get extra points if we make the specific kind of steampunk MOC that you'd like to see? Ninjamech, vehicle, dinosaur...?

Also, what was the steampunk MOC?

Yeah, maybe I'll do it.

Today.

I'll think what to do. I've done a steampunkish Toa before, but I'm not sure what to build.

No...

The voters will decide what's the best steampunk MOC. I'm merely telling you my vision for this contest, but now that you all are thinking of ideas it's out of my hands (sorta. You can't just post something random and call it steampunk, I guess).

Can you describe steampunk a little bit more?

--KK17

Sure!

First, did you read the article I linked to on Wikipedia? It's not that bad, and unfortunately I can't link to any major steampunk websites, so it's the best I can give.

Now then, I'll start with this: When I usually try to describe steampunk to people, I say something like that it is today's technology imagined back in Victorian aged England, powered by steam. Cogs and gears are an iconic bit as they would do the work after being moved by something powered by steam instead of gas or electricity. Wood (brown pieces) and metal (grey/metallic pieces) are primary materials used in steampunk.

If you ever watched the Around the World in 80 Days movie (with Jackie Chan), then Phineas Fogg's stuff/inventions was steampunk.

I've found some pictures here too to show you some examples:

1...2...3...4...5...6...7...8... (I think that's enough.)

While clockwork and steam can not be seen in all of these, they look like the function, where as a few MOCs just, for example, could make a brown car and call it steampunk.

I hope this helps. I also hope that some others might feel like adding in their view of steampunk.

This contest is relevant to my interests.

Unfortunately, I am terrible at MOCing. So I'll just keep an eye on this, rather than entering. Maybe. But yeah, I think that Bionicle pieces would be perfect for a ton of steampunk. Gears and robotiness and tubes and all that. Fun stuff.

Love the theme.

I finished my entry an hour ago.

...

Then I decided to scrap it because it looks terrible.

Back to the drawing board.

My entry is finished, I will send you an PM with the B-Shelf link tomorow :)

No need to PM me. Go ahead and post it here.

But then I can't get it noticed so people will enter.

This is common practice for blog contests. Don't worry. And I think you'll learn to ignore it on the blog list if it does not appeal to you.

As actual figures piloting them? No, this is the Bionicle Universe.

However, if you were thinking of using parts of bodies (like minifig legs for fingers) then ask again.

Sounds interesting. I've never been that good of a MOCer, but sure, I'll give it a shot. Doubt it's gonna stack up to the other entries though...

Uploading the pictures now, I'll edit this post real soon.

EDIT: Here ya be:

Your Name: Ultimate_Kardas

Your MOC's Name: Alphanaught

And just in case, here's the gallery.

What about BIONICLE minifigs? I'm making a vehicle, but the cockpit is really too small for anything bigger than a minimized Matoran.

I had considered maybe entering with something from the Skopio's parts (I had imagined that maybe its many pistons might make good steampipes, etc.), but with entries like that in the running it's not even worth it. Don't think I'm resentful, either; that MOC is simply outstanding!

Suit yourself, Aanchir, but if you ever feel like making a Steampunk Bionicle MOC, point me in its direction, OK?

I would not mind, however, if you did change your mind and enter.
