Multiverse Guide Art Contest!

We have a 100 page Multiverse Guide. [Edit: Here's the link to the Guide V2!] It's got just about all the text it needs. But it could use a lot of art. That's what this mini-contest is for!

Now, even though we didn't intentionally aim for 100 pages, now that that's what it is, we like it and we wanna keep it that way. Therefore, we only have room for art in specific spots where there is whitespace, or where later whitespace could absorb expansion.

So I've composed a list of specific images we want.

How you create these images, and what styles and specific details you use, beyond what is described in the Guide itself, is totally up to you! Let your imagination run wild! You can do hand-drawn, computer assisted hand-drawn, totally doing it on the computer, and you can use whatever programs you want. Technically you could do sculpture scenes, for some things even MOCs. Whatever you want.

Plus, you can enter as many or few images as you want. You could theoretically do every single image. We're not attaching the normal constraints to this contest -- we want quality art and as much of it as we can.

And the prize for winning is, your image will be in the next version of the Multiverse Guide PDF file!

There are a few rules to keep in mind for practical reasons.

Rules and Guidelines
  1. Please go to the page number listed for each image possibility before you get started, for two reasons:
    1. To
see how much whitespace is available so you know how big your art can be
. This will help you decide the level of detail you can afford to use; if your image is too large for the available space we'll have to size it down and lose some of the detail and quality.

NOTE: For some, you won't see whitespace on the page given, but if you scroll down a ways, you'll see there is extra whitespace before a page break later on, where the expansion can be absorbed.

      Also, you
may want to submit the image as a little larger than what will fit
and we will size it down either via computer or in the PDF-making program (depending on what doesn't ruin the image quality). Better this than you submitting it too small; we can't size that up.

    2. Be sure to
read the descriptions in the text itself before you start
, so you know what the basics of its appearance should be. But again, feel free to go wild with your imagination beyond those details! :-)

  2. Your images should have your member name visible in the pic as a "watermark", preferably lower right corner. We might not have room to do credits as a caption, and it's important that you get credited for your work.

You might be confused about this from what we've said about credit; members who USE content from the Multiverse submissions in their own fanfics etc. don't have to cite you the content contributor by name, but in the guides we DO have to cite you by member name.

  3. As with anything submitted to the Multiverse, you agree to give up exclusive rights to the artwork (as implied above, in terms of other people being able to use the images for their own fiction etc. elsewhere).

  4. And note that we are talking about your member name; do not use your real-world name. Use the member name you want to be permanently in the Guide.)

  5. Again, you can enter as many different pieces of art or versions of the same piece as you want.

Swert and I will choose the winners. Ojhilom will help if he has time. If multiple people enter the same image list item, we'll choose the best. If only one person enters a particular image item, that will most likely be the winner. It's possible images won't get winners if we think good enough images weren't entered. We'll decide what to do in that instance later if it happens.

It's possible the same artist could win multiple art-slots, but we will try to fairly balance the winners among the number of people entering.

  6. Remember: We're looking for cool, quality art! :D

  7. Contest begins now, and closes at midnight EST Tuesday January 18, 2010. That's roughly 3 months.

Entry Format

Art Slot: INSERT

Art topic link: Click here

Insert the slot name before the size end-tag in place of "INSERT" (the slot name is the bolded part of each list item above). Insert the image URL in place of "PICURLHERE." Finally, if you made an Artwork topic for it, insert the URL of the topic in place of "http://URLHERE" (if not, just remove that line).

You don't need to state your member name via text; it must be in the image anyways, but feel free to add it if you wish.

For each separate artwork piece you enter, use the entry form again. Post entries here.

If you see another spot where art could be squeezed in, feel free to suggest it, and we'll see what we think. Please lemme know of any page number errors above too; I found one while preparing this blog entry and there may be more.

Also any questions, please ask.

ION: Results of Monster Mystery contest begin to be unveiled next week as the first chapter in a Bones Blog short epic. :) I'm going to try an approach I have never done before -- write each chapter each new week instead of writing the whole thing at once (and I'll aim for very concise, thrilling, action-packed for this one ^_^). So as it continues, even I will have no idea how it will end (other than the identity of the Monster, which is already chosen).

Then when it's all done I'll release it again quickly as an epic in the Library (and probably convert the blog entries to links to the chapters, to save slight amounts of server space :P). Or maybe I'll compress it into an SS, not sure. Anyways.

I'd expect Thursdays to be the days chapters of that get released. :) I may do other blog entries some weeks earlier in the week, depending on how much time I have. Oh, and I think I'll aim for at least ten chapters, but very short ones. The basic style I want to return to for this is how I wrote my original four short stories back when the Paracosmos first launched, 'cuz I always loved that style.

[Edit: Okay, so other stuff got in my way and Thursday didn't happen this time. Still planning to do this. :)]

The second topic link is a blog post. I hope that's all right...?

Also, please feel free to crop, edit, or resize the images as is needed to fit the guide. I can do it myself if it's too much trouble...

Isn't Kakaru's Space Kolhii logo just the old Space Lego logo with a kolhii ball instead of a planet? He can be disqualified for that, right?

I can't access PDF files, so I don't know how much whitespace I can use.

The is considerable because my Red Skull entry takes up about 850 by 512. My Iron Hawk logo is smaller, but still large, and probably larger in height.

How much whitespace is available to Red Skull and Iron Hawk anyway?

(And how do you access PDF files?)

Question:

I want to try the Team Cipher pic, thts art slot 18, and it tells me to refer to page 85. Is the pic supposed to fit next to the bullet-points/list of those main characters, or does it go right at the bottom of the page, since there's a bit of white space available. I'm assuming it goes at the top of the page, but can the species stuff be moved down a bit? Its because I want to make the entry pic a little taller (as in portrait instead of landscape). I don't actually mean make the pic portrait, but I just need more space lenght-wise, instead of making the pic fatter.

Also, does my pic have to follow the mask designs from the previous entries on page 81, 82 etc? Its because I have been thinking up some new designs, but I don't know if its allowed. I do want a bit more flexiblity with the requirements. Needless to say, if it says 'He wears a Jutlin', i'll give him a jutlin. But can I render things differently?

Dude, that's what Reality Shifts are for. :P

Can you remind me what's a reality shift? Please forgive me, but I'm doing exams right now, and all I'm thinking about is revision XD

(~although somehow I do manage to get onto BZP...)

Can anyone give me a definite answer to my previous post?

Reality Shifts are a phenomenon due to Bluespace that causes minor details of the universe to change depending on the time and/or the person seeing it. This is most common with buildings and physical objects. This is why two artists can depict the same object differently, and both would be correct. That is why your way of drawing Team Cipher would still be accurate.

Also, just because I feel like it, I'll tell you the rest about Reality Shifts. A rarer form of Reality Shift is when two events happen at the same time, place, and both would have happened, and all present would remember both events happening. This is so that if two writers have a part of their story taking place at the same time and in the same location, they won't conflict.

The rarest form of Reality Shift is when one person is found in two different places for a brief time (that are relatively near to each other). Another example would be when they are doing two different things in the same place, which is similar to a combination of the Event and Character reality shifts. The former allows for two writers to use the same character in their stories and the stories won't conflict. The latter shift serves the same purpose and the Event Shift.

Rules involving reality shifts include:

1. Reality Shifts can't be used as Deus Ex Machina

2. It cannot affect major events.

There are a couple of exceptions to Rule 2, however. The first is that it poses a threat to intangibility. Armor has been known to fuse to walls due to reality shifts when walking through them using intangibility, and if the user is using a mask of intangibility, he/she must maintain the mask's power, otherwise they will merge with the wall like Matau did in Maze of Shadows.

The second is the Mask of Reality Shifting, which can control Reality Shifts in some ways, but I don't want to go into that right now. If you want to learn more, check out the EM Guide.

Can't help you with your other question, though. Only Swert and bonesiii would be able to answer that.

I don't see what's wrong with it, especially since he said on his blog he meant it as a tribute to that.

For those logos, the size of the entry in the post right before you is about right, but we can size bigger ones down. As long as they're simple enough that losing the detail won't ruin it.

If the PDF download link doesn't work for you, you should be able to get the Adobe reader for it on their website. :)

Your own interpretation of the masks is fine. :)

*goes to guide*

Answer to that question is whichever way you wanna do it. If you wanna do everybody side-by-side, long and short, you can. If you wanna do 'em with some in the back, smaller ones in front, you can. We'll put it in which of the two whitespaces fits your approach if you win that slot. If you do wide, it will have to be fairly short though, so I'd recommend aiming for next to the list.

Okay. I'll post the original (BTW one of my few powerpoint arts that actually follows your guide well) Red Skull, as well as the shrunken versions of both Iron Hawk (thankfully in Powerpoint I can shrink it without detail loss [it uses a lot of thin lines], unlike the case with Red Skull...)
