I would think people stealing sodium would think to keep it in the oil it came in, because there's a reason small amounts of metal worth stealing come in oil.

 

Unless it wasn't in oil, in which case I'm surprised they got it in their pocket without burning their hand.

I don't know all the details since apparently it happened in Michigan or something, but apparently a teacher was showing his students how reactive sodium was with water, the class ended, the teacher accidentally left the sodium out, the kid stole some, his nether regions caught fire, and now teachers aren't allowed to do that.

Having sodium out to be stolen, or setting kids' pants on fire? :unsure:

 

I know that in New Zealand, many schools aren't allowed Potassium in school anymore, and even Lithium is a teacher's demonstration.

LOL, I just had a really stupid question in Science class like that.

 

"Your friend just came back from a hiking trip and found a piece of sodium for you. What is your response?"
