Nobody got the answer last week, but Sumiki was the closest, so he wins this round. :P

Answer: The man was the winner of the prestigious London Marathon race. He waved to the large crowd the entire way down the finishing straightaway and, because of that, he just failed to break the record for the marathon -- thereby missing out on the $30,000 bonus prize.

Round Three

Rules:

  1. Don't share answers with each other, even answers you know aren't right. Doing so will get you disqualified for that round. This also applies for stealing another person's answer when you didn't come up with it yourself.
  2. You may, however, share theories. If you come up with an answer with the help of another contestant, make sure you mention that you did so, and who that was so I can give them credit.
  3. Each round, I will post the clues that correspond with that puzzle in a spoiler tag, assuming there are clues. Yes, there are some with no clues. Deal with it.
  4. If you have heard some of these puzzles before (Rockhound and Robo, I'm looking at you), out of courtasy to the other contestants please don't share the answer to others.
  5. There are no prizes for winning, save bragging rights.
  6. If you believe you have the answer, post it in spoilers in the comments. Share theories through IM, PM, whatever floats your boat.
  7. You will have one week from the posting of the new puzzle to solve it. Afterwards, the blog entry will be locked.

The train was carrying supplies to a city that was starving during a war, because the land to reach the city was held by the enemy?

Kind of far-fetched, but it'll do for an answer. :P

Germany vs. Russia?

They needed things immediately, and doing it over land would take too long?

They want someone else to use it and sink?

More to likely come later.

It was Russia during WWII. The Germans were closing in on major Russian cities in the dead of winter. People were starving and dieing and so a railroad had to be built over the ice to send them food and ammo. The reason it could not go by land is because it would have been captured by the invaders.

Everybody's stated the obvious by now, but I believe the city in question was St. Petersburg. Obviously I have come too late but I just thought I'd throw that out there

Germany built it over the Volga River to get supplies to their forces to Stalingrad during WWII.

Highlight above.
