What Makes A Successful Blog?

Taka Nuvia

I've now had a blog for about one and a half years, but there's something that keeps on amazing me - there are so many blogs out there, but it seems that only a few special kinds of blogs/blog entries gets loads of attention.

WARNING: If you're easily offended you might better not read this. If you go ahead and read the rest, please take note that I don't have anything against people who do the things I stated, even though what I wrote might sound a bit harsh.

But what makes a blog entry 'successful', and animates people to reply?

1) Short entries

They don't have to be meaningful, they don't need to make sense at all. Sometimes a simple "Hai Guise" gets a ton of replies. Because if your entries are short and simple, I) Everyone will understand them and II) You don't take away everything in your entry, and there's always something the others can add. And most of the time you don't have to think about what you could reply for a longer time than one or two minutes.

2) Picture entries

Simply post a 'funny' picture as your entry (can be anything from chibi-ized superheroes to deformed pics of people to lolcats.) They don't even need to be self-made, the internet is so big that you can find anything.

3) Life crisis

People will want to help you.

Or, if you sound too whiny they mighta post only to let you know how emo you're behaving.

4) Questions

Such as "Should I dye my hair pink?" or "What do you think of...?"

It also helps your blog a lot if you are very popular or an Admin/Moderator.

... I had to get that off my mind.

Yes, I am a bit angry that I didn't get many comments lately even though I was quite active on the forums. Yes, some parts of the above are meant to be sarcastic. No, I don't hate you.

Thanks for your attention and have a nice day. :)

Notice the difference between 'Succesful' and 'Good'. Short entries are what I find more difficult to comment to, as well as picture entries, because to things that can only be commented with a such things as a 'LOL' are not neccessary to comment on. You´re certain everyone has already done it.

Also, sorry for not commenting; although I´ll have to mention that I´ve been away for the last three days, so I do feel I have a kind of excuse. =J

True, true... you do make a point.

And I very often feel the same. But then again, if people have done it before you, you can be sure that your post won't look weird if compared to the others'. It's easier to be just another face in the crowd.

That's okay, you don't need to apologise. :)

You're one of the few people who do comment my blog entries frequently (and nearly all of them).

Also, I didn't make this blog entry only to yell at people "WHY DON'T YOU COMMENT MY BLOG?!!!!?!!!!?!!!!" (Well, maybe a bit, too), but to finally have stated it once. =J

Yeah. As annoying as it is, remember good > successful. As fun as it is to reply to random entries, too many are meh . However, there is no rule on what folks can post about in this regard, so it's best to ignore it. If more people did that instead of feeding it, more original blogs could get noticed.

I have got six or seven blogs in my fav list to which I reply once in a while. Yours is one of them, Taka.

And I agree with your analysis - though sometimes people just go by interests or by people they know. Some blogs, like GregF's, bonesiii's or Binkmeisters (and more recently also mine) are frequented by people who are still interested in the BIONICLE storyline. Others are artists and thus they visit the blogs of BZP's many artists. You are on my fav list mainly because I regard you as my friend here. :)

I feel you and I made the same observations, but I guess if you put out Quality long enough people start flocking to you automatically at some point ^^
