Last night I turned in my final undergrad assignment before getting my BS in Mechanical Engineering. It was a 100-page research document entitled "Motivations, Values, and Creative Processes of Participatory LEGO Bionicle Fan Community," which feels like an appropriate way to cap things off.

Might try to get it published. We'll see if I have the motivation.

Ehhhh character design is not my strong suit but I was trying.

Not sure what kind of legs to do; I've had a couple of horrifically poor prototypes.

The best Legend of Zelda character. Well... Guru-Guru come close. But I relate to Shad so much, and adore his character design.

Anywho I changed my profile pic, which gives me a grand total of one pic change and one name change in the seven years I've been here. All ya hooligans with your name contests every month give me vertigo.

    AAAAAAAAHHHHH

I was going to get a New 3DS XL, but obtaining all four of these is my #1 priority. They are so beautiful and I cannot not have all Zelda amiibo.

I needed some things, so I built them out of LEGO. It's cheaper that way, until you need the parts later.

    A hat rack.

A deck box. (Green-Blue counter multiplying deck, by the way.)

    An Amiibo Stand.

    Sensor bar holder.

In other news, I'm in the middle of making some changes to my LEGO storage, which is not the ideal time for a really cool BBCC to pop up. Ah well.

It's exactly what it sound like. Alternating three minute intervals of chess and boxing, you win if you checkmate your opponent in chess or knock out your opponent in boxing.

I had no idea this was a thing.

As I see it, there are two possible timelines:

The year is 2036. Zelda NX/Wii U is consistently lauded as the best game of all time, praised for its visual design, sprawling and interesting overworld, and masterful combination of open world gameplay, satisfying combat, and engaging narrative. All children play it as a rite of passage, and most gaming sites have a week, if not a month, dedicated to discussing and celebrating the game. There is many a humble reflection on how frustrated we were when the game was originally delayed, and how grateful we are that Nintendo knew it could not rush art.
The year is 2036, and the game formerly known as Zelda Wii U has been announced for a tentative 2037 release on the New Super Nintendo GameIsocahedron U.

I presented my paper "The LEGO System Makes Co-Creation Painless for the LEGO Group" at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research a couple days ago. It went excellently. People were really interested, and I attracted a fellow college AFOL to my presentation who I got to talk with.

It was about how the the LEGO Group harnesses the innovations and ideas of the AFOL community, and how the LEGO System itself eliminates or minimizes the obstacles that other firms face when co-creating.

The bad news is that A) I didn't submit my poster for a different symposium, I'm rushing that in now and B) I did almost no other homework during the conference.

Still, very worth it, though I still find it weird that I submitted a Business paper when I'm a STEM guy through and through. It was fun.

Recommend me some. Anything--modern, 'classic,' ancient, whatever genre.

I tend gravitate towards fantasy/sci-fi, but I'm eager to expand that as well. but I've added a threadbare books sidebar that mostly just reflects my plans to reread some of my favorite fantasy/sci-fi series this summer, but I also want some new things.

Real talk, though. I feel guilty about how little I read nowadays. Up until a couple years ago I read in every spare moment. How much I read was a problem sometimes. Books are a brilliant and astonishingly immersive and thought-provoking and I love them. And then:
It stopped being convenient to peruse a library every day
I started talking with people during times I would usually read during
I got a portable gaming device
I discovered Zelda and the the world of really good, impactful video games
    Dungeons & Dragons
    Academics got time-intensive
I got a smartphone and can now waste time very easily

Most of these are good things, except that not hanging out in the library is a pity, and much of the time I spend on my phone I really do think is wasted and would be better spent reading (or, you know, doing homework).

Yet, I don't think books are inherently more meritorious than other types of media. I don't regret any of the time I've spent playing or re-playing games, or planning/playing D&D. Videogames and tabletop RPGs have certain unique merits and unique ways of making me think and experience. The problem is, after discovering those things, I miss the reading experience and its unique merits. I am, in fact, nostalgic for the days when I read exclusively, without any real devotion to videogames or D&D.

Also games tend to not expand my vocabulary and impact my syntax as much books, which makes me feel like a less intelligent individual. Which is silly.

Also there's the balance of experiencing new books/games and participating in communities. I love being part of communities, but when every minute spent on a forum is a minute I'm not broadening my reading/playing experience, I feel conflicted.

Also there's this thing where entertainment stops becoming entertainment and starts being an obligation. Which is weird.

    Also.

    Also also.

Ultimately, the biggest factor is not my distribution of free time between different activities, but rather a decrease in available free time. Which is unavoidable.

tl;dr I don't read as much as I used to, I don't have the backlog of books I want to read that I usually do, recommend some books.

They've really improved the graphics! They've got an opening cinematic, Fox has his reflector, and his up-B is nicer-looking! And most importantly, ledge-grabbing!

Also Corrin and Bayonetta are out but I can't mess with them 'til the weekend.

If you had told me a couple months ago that, as a poor college student, I would be spending eight bucks on yoyo lube, I wouldn't have believed you. Especially if you also told me that Twilight Princess HD, great new Bionicle sets, and the Majora's mask remake I still haven't played would be competing for that money.

But you can't use videogames or Lego while walking to and from classes.

Currently Playing: Zizelkatzeka "Zizel" Nindu'ain, Grey Elf Psion (Shaper). Eager to become a world-renowned sculptor, Zizel services his keen capitalist instinct with persuasive Psionic powers and +13 to Craft(Sculpture). Has a thistle plant named Gunther who he's convinced holds psionic secrets and a Psistone named Zeka who has the feat Light Armor Proficiency.

1st Ever Character: Fado Kooloo-Limpah, Gnomish Druid. Had a Camel named Molgera. At level two, died, then was resurrected through having his soul and body combined with that of a young red dragon. The party later killed him after the dragon took over his consciousness.

Previous Character: Reic Trigmond, Human Wizard. Played two sessions with this guy.

Other Previous Character: Eustace Trigmond, Human Ardent. Ardents are the Psionic equivalent of Clerics, but instead of being devoted to a god they're devoted to universal concepts. Having killed his father, Reic Trigmond, in a freak accident, Eustace was devoted to Murphy's law and constantly expounded on the futility of it all. As an Ardent ability, Eustace regained Power Points any time he critically failed at something.

So I'm DMing a D&D 3.5 game with six players. Here's the deal:
None of them are RPG gamers.
Five out of six are girls.
They are totally oblivious to all the fantasy tropes and D&D traditions they are constantly throwing out the window.
They are totally oblivious to how incredible their total lack of metagaming is.

One player is Kowski Bronwyn Arcana, the Whisper Gnome Halfling. Normally Whisper Gnome would be a very cheesy race--mechanically, they're one of the best 0 LA races in the game. She chose them because she liked a description of Whisper Gnomes she saw on Wikipedia. She didn't even realize there would be mechanical benefits until I told her.

Kowski doesn't steal things. She's a rogue who developed her stealth skills so she could do good deeds without being thanked.

Concrete is a half-elf ranger. She cares deeply for the Orc populations and is constantly trying to help the poor Orc farmers. Her favored enemy is Animals because those are what most often threaten said Orcs.

Kowski once accidentally one-shotted an Orc in a dungeon. Concrete immediately brought the Orc's body back to his family and offered her condolences. Kowski went into town, purchased a casserole, and left it on the Orc family's windowsill during the night.

Redwynn is a Dwarf barbarian. Illiteracy is usually a class feature of Barbarians. Here's an excerpt from her backstory, written by the player:

Just... No metagaming at all, genuine and continued remorse for everyone they've harmed, and (usually) a great deal of respect for the city authorities. I find it hilarious and touching in turns.

    What? No, the original trilogy.

I can see why people love this so much, it's excellent worldbuilding.
    Fantastic props/sets/aesthetics.
Oh, so that's what <insert Star Wars minifig> is based on.
Seriously, everything is these films has been Lego-ized. TLG and AFOLs are thorough.
Now I can wear those Darth Vader socks I got for Christmas.

Cliche as loot posts are, I think my first foray into Steam gaming warrants mention.

LEGO Doctor Who Ideas set. That Tardis is fantastic!
Star Wars T-Shirts and socks. I still have yet to watch any Star Wars movies.
Two pairs of suspenders and a very cool bow tie.
    The 9th/10th Doctor's sonic screwdriver.
    Bedding.
    Ice scrapers.
A heavy-duty tackle box for LEGO storage. Should be easy to pack some essentials into and take to college.
Steam games purchased with Christmas money:

Undertale, which has been hilarious so far. Love the "battle" system, love the writing, love the music. I want a sequel made with a full development team.
Portal. Possibly the best $2 I've ever spent.
    Portal 2.
Bastion, which ~Shockwave~ recommended a while back.
Skyrim + DLC. Makes me wish I was playing D&D.
Final Fantasy VII. Not just because Cloud is in Smash, I promise.
Pajama Sam in No Need to Hide when it's Dark Outside. A true classic.

I'm considering picking up Half-Life while it's cheap as well.

    1. Critical Role (Twitch-streamed D&D with voice actors, stellar roleplaying, a magnificent DM, and production values) just minutes ago finished streaming, for the first time, an illustrated narration of their 2.5 years of pre-stream adventures. I was so hyped for this project. It did not disappoint.

    2. A new Star Wars which rudely pulled people away from Critical Role.
