No. I was beating them well, too. They could still have beaten me, no denying. But it was not set in stone- I had obliterated their Dreadnought and emancipated more then a few of their squads.

You're forgetting I also had a well-armed Space Marine force bearing down on me hard with TWO Whirlwinds.
