Recently, a BZPer posted a topic insisting I had been rude to him in my answer to his PM. He had asked a question for which I did not have what I felt was a good or complete answer, so I appended, "for what it's worth to you" to the end of the answer -- since I had no way of knowing if the little bit of info I was giving would answer his question. He somehow decided that meant I thought his question was worthless or stupid, which was not the case. (If I HAD thought that, I simply wouldn't have bothered to answer at all.) As I think most of you know, "for what it's worth to you" simply means, "I don't know if this will any help to you or not, you have to decide that."

I have since explained this to him, but he seems determined to remain offended, and there is nothing I can do about that. But I thought it brought up a larger issue.

Yes, I answer a lot of PMs here, when I don't have to -- but that also means I am not FORCED to. So while sometimes my answers are curt -- even a lot of times -- I don't try to be rude and I don't intend to be. You guys are fans, and because of that, you need to be treated with respect. For some people, getting just a "yes" or "no" may seem harsh or rude, but that comes from the fact that if I take time to write long answers to everyone, I won't have time to answer all the questions I get. And in some cases, like this one, someone just honestly misinterprets something I say, and all I can do in that case is try to explain that they took it the wrong way.

I will not sit here and say I am never a little cranky on here , especially when people are trying to reopen debates for the 12th time that have long been closed. There are some things it is just a waste of time to go into, and if it's obvious the person knew that before asking, then my patience wears a little thin. But in the end, you are taking your free time to ask me stuff, and I am taking mine to answer -- and so we both have to respect each other, for the same reasons.

Heard from Scholastic today, and this is the way the book schedule is shaping up for 2008 --

In-Store June 2008 - BIONICLE Legends #10: Swamp of Secrets

    In-Store September 2008 - BIONICLE Legends #11: Title TBD

In-store December 2008 - First book of 2009 storyline, may be under a different series title

Since I am getting a LOT of questions this week, and since evidently nobody is reading the answers I am giving anyone else , I thought it would be a good idea to just put some FAQ answers here to save me some typing. Here we go:

    1) What does Phantoka mean?
A: Phantoka is our winter 2008 sub-brand for the Toa Nuva and Makuta sets. It is a Matoran term meaning "spirits of the air." It will not be applied to the summer '08 sets.

    2) Are all six small sets in January Av-Matoran?
    A: Yes.

    3) Are more Matoran sets coming out in summer '08?
A: Not as individual sets. However, there will be two more Matoran out in summer, packed with other models.

    4) Do the Matoran masks have names/powers?
A: Not at this point. Since the masks will not be used as powered masks, I have not bothered to assign what powers they would have in Great or Noble form or give them names at this point.

    5) Do the Makuta wear masks?
A: Yes, and they have different mask powers which will be revealed in 2008.

    6) Do the Toa Nuva still have the same mask powers?
    A: Yes.

    7) Are Tahu, Gali, and Onua coming out as sets?
    A: Yes, in summer '08.

    8) Will Icarax be a set?
    A. Yes, in first half of the year

    9) Are there any first half sets we have not seen pics of yet?
    A: Yes.

I will not, at this time, be answering questions about 2008 story, setting, or characters -- it's too early. If I answer them now, it leaves us with nothing to talk about in January. The fact that the set images are out does not mean we are suddenly in the midst of the 2008 story -- we still have 2007 to finish, and much of '08 won't make sense until you know how '07 ends.

Just a few things you can expect to see in BIONICLE Legends #10, in addition to the already confirmed return of Takanuva:

-- The return of Toa Krakua
-- First appearance in story of the leader of the Order of Mata Nui
-- Just what are those krana-kraata hybrids from way back in BA #10?
-- The origin of the Bohrok

While Book 10 will feature some of main story, it is probably going to start a trend of the books being a little bit more side story and mystery revelations as opposed to having to carry the entire load of telling story for the year. In part, this is because of the reduced publication schedule, in part because it is the ideal format to be able to resolve old mysteries (since comic has to focus on current characters only).

My best info right now is that books will continue into 2009, but how many and what format is still being discussed between LEGO Company and Scholastic.

A few pieces of news --

-- Scholastic has informed me of plans to do a new, second series of BIONICLE books starting in late 2008, in addition to the regular ones they have been doing. These will be what they call Level 3 Readers and will be aimed at 5-6 year olds -- similar to what they have done for Batman and other lines. I am writing the first one, and we will see how they do and whether they want me to do the others.

While I am going to make an effort for these to be canon, they will NOT be referenced in other BIONICLE story areas, because I don't want 14 year old fans feeling they have to read something written for a 6 year old to keep up with story. They are going to be very short (about 1500 words), so if you have little brothers interested in BIONICLE and not old enough to read the comics or books yet, this might be a good way to get them started.

It's a little bit of a gamble on the part of Scholastic, because that is not traditionally the BIONICLE audience. However, a lot of the Scholastic audience is that young, and recruiting future 8-9 year olds is important for the health of our franchise. So we will give this a shot and see if we can raise awareness of BIONICLE prior to the movie. Its success or failure will not impact the comic, web site, movie, etc., which will still be aimed at the 9-11 audience.

Anyway, on to the timeline for this year, as best as I know it --

The March comic, Bionicle Legends #9, and Bionicle Legends #10 all take place at roughly the same time, along with the Makuta and Brutaka web serials.
The Takanuva biocast will take place just after the events of Book 10, but will explain in brief what is going on with him so you won't be lost.
The first Level 3 reader will occur between the events of Bionicle Legends #10 and the biocast -- since I am not expecting the reader fans to be looking at any of the other material that much, I am not worrying as much about timeline with those books.

Many of you may have heard or read or even seen a video that popped up on Amazon.com and elsewhere recently that involved BIONICLE in general and summer 2008 in particular. So let me address some of the Q's you may have about it:

    Q. What was it?
    A. It was the first draft of what we call a "sell-in" video. That's a video we prepare to show buyers from dept. stores, Toys R Us, etc., to get them excited about BIONICLE for the year. It is not something shown to the public.

    Q. So how did it get online?
    A. Accidentally. We send electronic files of our TV commercials to Amazon to show on their site. Someone accidentally included the file of this video on the CD mailed to them.

    Q. I noticed (fill in the blank) on the video -- does that mean ...?
    A. This was a first cut -- it was not the final version of the video. Certain elements in the video shown on the web would have been cut from the final version, for reasons of time or because the content was no longer valid. So while there are certainly things in the video that would have been in the final version, not all of it is final and official.

    Q. Now what?
    A. Billund has taken steps to severely tighten up the process we use for these sell-in videos. They will not be stored in a totally separate area of the server and branded "Confidential" so this won't happen again.

    Q. Can I still see it?
    A. Amazon has taken the video down, and the other sites that had it up have either also done so or probably will have done so by the time you read this. As a reminder, BZP has banned any discussion of the video on this site.

With the latest round of supposed set names and images floating around on the Net, I am getting a lot of PMs asking about 2009 sets, names, and a few about story. In a few cases, I have been able to provide answers, in many more cases I cannot. And most BZPers know that they cannot expect answers on the next year's product this early in the year before.

So that said, I am not going to spend time writing "I can't discuss this" over and over to people who already know that. PMs asking me about 2009 will, until further notice, simply not get answers. I cannot very well ask BZP to respect LEGO's policy re: leaked info (real or not) and then disrespect the policy myself by commenting here.

So if you are planning to send me "Real or fake?" PMs or anything like that re: 2009 sets, please don't waste your time. You won't receive a response until LEGO Company clears me to discuss next year, which won't be for a few months at least.

There are lots of rumors flying around BZP, and the word "reboot" is being used a lot (often by people who don't know what the word means) ... so I thought I would address them here.

-- The plan for 2009 is to take the story in a new direction. That does NOT mean:

    * Killing all the old characters
    * Pretending all the old story never happened
    * Starting over again with the Toa Mata on Mata Nui
    * Telling a story that has nothing to do with anything that happened before.

    It DOES mean:

    * Telling a story that an old fan can appreciate and get something out of, and that a new fan can follow without having to know everything that happened before.
    * Restoring that sense of "exploring a new place" that we had in 2001.
    * Trying some new things with sets, story, setting, etc., while still keeping it BIONICLE.

So for those people who have been sending me panicky PMs, stop -- outside of what I just listed, NO ONE on BZP knows ANYTHING about 2009. So if you hear someone saying something you do not see on the list above, then it is just speculation on their part and you need to take it as such. (It's great that people want to speculate, but some members take their guesses as fact and get nervous. )

Just talked to Scholastic today and got the current 2009 schedule --

It looks at this point like there will be a total of five books in 2009, three the young readers and two chapter books (potentially larger than the normal ones, but don't know yet) --

The readers would be out in January, April, and September, with the chapter books out in summer and fall. The hope is that between the buzz the readers are generating among the retailers (apparently, they are going to get into some big stores that the chapter books currently do not), the increasing sales of BIONICLE and the movie coming, and the chapter books being more of "event books", that chapter book sales will go up and we will be able to do a more extensive schedule of them in 2010. Scholastic does not want to abandon them, but sales continue to be in a trough for them, so right now the two is the best they can manage for the schedule.

I will still be doing them, but will probably also be spending some time on my own, non-LEGO writing, since the readers don't take much time to do.

Sunday morning and hard at work on Bionicle Legends #7, which is due in a few weeks. Vezon just slammed Matoro headfirst into a wall (bet he will regret that before he gets much older).

Writing to the absolute best music ever invented for writing -- the music of Ennio Morricone, who did the soundtracks for all those old Clint Eastwood "spaghetti Westerns" like A Fistful of Dollars and The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. Boy, if you can't write a good action scene with that playing, you might as well pack up your keyboard. I wrote my first novel -- The River of God -- 100,000 words -- in six weeks playing that and the music from Hang 'Em High. (Since most sci-fi is just Westerns in space, it worked well.)

For those of you who are BIONICLE nostalgia lovers, look for appearances by the Toa Nuva and the Bahrag in Book 7. It is looking right now like the Nuva might have a larger role in 2007-2008 than I had at first thought they would (originally, I did not think they would be in the story at all next year). We have another story meeting in September in Denmark, at which time we should be making firm decision about exactly where we're going and what we're doing in the story for the next three years.

Anyway, here is the question for the day -- as I have already indicated on this board, the mystery of where krana come from will be answered next year. Of the other story "loose ends," which ones would you most like to see resolved? (Obviously, the answer is "all of them," but I am trying to find out which ones are MOST important to your story satisfaction.

Recently, there has been a lot of confusion on BZP over the plans for an alternate model of Jetrax in the November LEGO Magazine. Apparently, a lot of people have thought that refers to the yellow Jetrax store exclusive set, so I thought it was time for a little Alternate Model 101:

    Q. What is an alternate model?

    A. It's a new model built using pieces of an existing one.

    Q. Would the yellow Jetrax be considered an alternate model?

    A. No. You cannot build yellow Jetrax using pieces from existing 2008 models, because none of the sets have those pieces in yellow. If you have to paint existing pieces to build the model, it's not an alternate model

    Q. What is the difference between a LEGO Magazine alternate model and the yellow Jetrax?

    A. Besides what's already been stated, a LEGO Magazine alternate model is designed exclusively for Club by our Master Model Builders. Instructions are provided either in the magazine or on LEGO Club website. Club alternate models are not for sale in any store, though obviously the models they are based off of are.

Yellow Jetrax is a store exclusive model. It has its own packaging, it's for sale, and it includes its instructions just as any other LEGO set does.

So to sum up -- if we were doing a page showing the yellow Jetrax, it would not be referred to an alternate model page in the magazine, more likely as a feature page (since it shows an existing set available for sale with its instructions included). An alt. model page features a new model constructed using pieces from an existing one, with instructions available only through LEGO Club.

    Make sense?

I finally got to see the animation test for the new movie last week -- wow.

For whatever my opinion is worth, it blows away any character animation ever done for BIONICLE and speaks to a lot of things BZPers have said they wanted in a new movie. If the whole movie can look like that, we are going to have quite a film.

The latest news I have heard is that a lot of concept art is done, voice recording should be done soon, and the studio is straining at the leash to get started on the script for the 2010 movie.

    ANTROZ

Quote: "Toa serve an important purpose in this world -- they help me keep my claws sharp."

Personality: Antroz if the leader of the Brotherhood of Makuta forces in Karda Nui and an accomplished warrior. He is well aware that he has to deal with powerful personalities in the other Makuta and the need to make sure he retains their respect. Unlike the Makuta of Metru Nui, he never underestimates a foe. Antroz is a rare Makuta who has some sense of honor and would rather win a fight fairly than cheat.

Mask: Kanohi Jutlin, the Mask of Corruption. Causes items to slowly rot and break down.

    Equipment: Tridax pod; claws; teeth

    RADIAK

As fierce a fighter for the side of shadow as he ever was for light, Radiak was once the biggest hero among the Av-Matoran. Now that he has been corrupted, he delights in challenging his former friends to combat and then seeing them ambushed by the Makuta.

    Equipment: Four legs blades; teeth

Powers: Can shoot shadow energy from his blades; sloth -- can make a target too slow and lazy to get away (accessible only when riding a Makuta).

    Hey guys,

Recently, in answer to a question, I had stated that Krakua was a MEMBER of the OOMN. This was a mistake on my part (unfortunately, with all the BIONICLE I write, sometimes I confuse things I thought about doing with what I actually did).

So, to make up for the confusion, I am going to give you guys a sneak preview of Bionicle Legends #11:

Divide and conquer, Pohatu thought as he piloted the Rockoh through a tight turn.
The Makuta forces had split up. Gorast and Vamprah had gone after Icarax; Krika had vanished; Mutran, too, was nowhere in sight; and as soon as he spotted Takanuva, Antroz had sent Bitil and Chirox after him. That left Antroz alone against Lewa, Pohatu and Kopaka.
Not that the Makuta seemed to mind. In full control of the Jetrax T6, he had darted around, over and through every obstacle Pohatu or Lewa had thrown in his way, and outpaced Kopaka with ease. Hitting and running, he had already done significant damage to the Rockoh.
Now Lewa was on Antroz’s tail in the Axalara T9. The Toa of Air was buffeting Antroz’s ship with gale-force winds in an effort to crash it into the forest of stone pillars created by Pohatu. Earlier, Antroz had used his magnetic power to send the Axalara into a spin, and only quick action by Pohatu had kept it from crashing into the swamp.
Antroz spotted the Rockoh and fired. The Jetrax’s Skyblasters hit their target, sending the Rockoh into a spin. Pohatu fought to right the ship, but it was headed for one of the stone pillars he had created. Quickly, he used his elemental power to shatter the rock before the ship collided with it.
Lewa banked to the left, trying to flank Antroz. The Axalara was a more powerful ship, but the Jetrax was faster. He needed to box Antroz in somehow.
Further behind, Kopaka had been working at the same thing. But every ice wall he threw up got blown to pieces by the Jetrax’s weapons or smashed by the vehicle itself. Every rain hail stones had been shrugged off by Antroz and bounced harmlessly off the Jetrax’s armored hull.
Pohatu was back in the fight now, and he was angry. Timing it just right, he made a hand of stone erupt out of the swamp and grab the Jetrax. Before Antroz could power it free, Pohatu hit the controls and pulled the Rockoh’s wings in for a dive. Firing as he flew, he raked the side of the Jetrax with bolts of energy.
Antroz jolted the craft free of the stone hand and wheeled in mid-air, firing at the Rockoh. When Pohatu dodged, Antroz used his gravity power to send the Toa’s ship plunging toward the swamp.
Lewa closed in, rocking the Jetrax with fire from the Axalara’s Skyblasters and shattering the Makuta’s concentration. Free of the increased pull of gravity, Pohatu managed to right his ship just as it skimmed the surface of the water.
Then it was Kopaka’s turn. He used his power to drop the temperature around the Jetrax hundreds of degrees in an instant, slowing down the vehicle’s engines and cutting its speed. Lewa and Pohatu closed in from both sides, ready to destroy the wounded craft.
Only Kopaka was close enough to see what happened next. Just as the two Toa vessels came in range, Antroz disappeared from the cockpit using his power to teleport. Acting quickly, Kopaka threw up ice barriers in front of the Axalara and the Rockoh, shouting, “Stop!”
Neither craft could turn in time, smashing into and through the ice. But the barriers had delayed them just long enough for Kopaka to climb behind the controls of the Jetrax. “All right,” said the Toa of Ice. “If this is the final battle, let’s make it one to remember.”

Something cute that happened today ...

I received in the mail this morning at work a copy of Archivaria, the Journal of the Association of Canadian Archivists (number 61, spring 2006). And who do you think is on the cover??

    Tehutti!

I had been in contact with the folks there for some time, and they were just thrilled that we made an action figure of an archivist. So we made arrangements to get them packaging art that they could put on the cover of their journal. So Tehutti lives on, in the hearts of Canadian archivists everywhere ...

Just a couple minor things --

    1) I start work on BIONICLE Legends #10 this weekend, which will open with the return of Takanuva to the storyline.

    2) Watch for Gali Nuva Blog chapter #6, which will feature the return of six heroes long thought gone for good!

    3) At the suggestion of a BZPer, I am trying to convince my wife to do the voice of Toa Hahli for an upcoming biocast chapter

    4) Since I got approval from Kelly to do more biocasts this year, expect the saga of the Staff of Artakha to spill over into the biocast -- also watch the Gali Nuva blog for the appearance of one of next year's new villains!

    5) I have another conference call today with the movie people re: the BIONICLE movie. Still very early in the process, but so far things are going smoothly.

    6) I have a meeting next week to discuss future plans for the comic and maybe ways we can get it more exposure outside of the Club.

More news as I get it ...

I'm home again, finally, after two weeks spent largely on the road!

It started with a few days in Saratoga Springs, NY, for LEGO Club meetings. Then after being home a couple days, it was off to Billund for BIONICLE story meetings. A few notes from the trip --

-- Billund is becoming the Orlando of Denmark. The hotels were packed, the airport was packed, and I had to stay with BIONICLE web producer Leah Weston Kaae and her family because there were no hotel rooms (and thanks to her for the hospitality). There are evidently plans to build a water park there now to go along with LEGOLAND.

-- The meetings went great. We totally mapped out 2009-2011 and everyone from the franchise manager on down was very happy with what we came up with. Enormous thanks to Christian from Advance, our creative agency, and Christoffer, our lead set designer, who contributed a lot of terrific ideas to the storyline. This past year has seen the story team working AS a team more than I think any other time in the history of BIONICLE. Lena and Jesper did their usual great job of keeping us on task, and Camilla let us know when we were going down paths that were too confusing or required too much knowledge of back story.

I won't say this was the most intense meeting we have ever had -- there wasn't any fighting, for one thing -- but it may have been the most productive. Over two days, we nailed three full years of story, including set ideas, settings, subtext, everything. I was fried by the end of it. The trip there and back was exhausting, but I have to say, it is really a great experience to be in a room with such creative people and just come up with ideas. When it's working, things flow; and when things stop flowing (as they did during one of our 2010 discussions), then you know you are on the wrong road and it's time to turn around and go back to the start.

-- Next step is I have to write up a summary of what we came up with for our next series of meetings in August, which are scheduled for four days mid-month.

-- Got to see the (almost) final 2008 summer sets. One thing to note is 2008 will see the return of some more advanced and complex builds, something BZPers have been asking for. I can't say anything beyond that, other than the sets are very impressive and definitely on my shopping list for next year.

-- There was a lot of other big news from the meeting, some you will hear about soon and some that has to wait a while. But all of it was good.

    -- Greg
  18. GregF
Hey -- back from the big story meeting in Billund with various bits of news --

    * I met with web producer Leah Kaae for half a day on Tuesday to discuss some future web plans. Then the whole story team met on Wednesday for about 9 hours.

    * Got to see about 16 of the 2008 sets -- winter releases, one store exclusive, and some of the big sets for next year -- the big ones, I have to say, rival the Ultimate Collectors Series Star Wars sets for sheer, striking look -- plus some really nice functionality. Hope they do not change too much between now and end of next year. That was, of course, not all the sets for next year.

    * Part of our time was spent discussing the "titan" sets for 2008 and the other store exclusives and what/who they should be. Some of the answers may surprise you

    * The rest of the time was spent discussing the 2008 storyline, which we basically locked down, and some rough ideas on 2009. We are going to probably need another meeting to work on 2009 some more, probably in April or May. My next job is to break the 2008 story down into 24 bite-sized chunks for the team. If you liked 2006 and 2007, and if you like old, familiar faces reappearing in the story, then you should like 2008. If you hated 2006 and 2007, I doubt 2008 will be much more to your taste -- and I have no idea how you will feel about 2009, too soon to tell.

    * A little bit of book news -- the Piraka and Axonn WILL be appearing in Book 8, as will the Toa Nuva and Artakha.

    * Glad to be home! I flew in Thursday, the day before the big snowstorm here, so outside of having to drive in it to pick up my wife at work, I was able to stay warm and dry through all the snow and sleet. So working on Book 8 today and then have to get back to WoW. Making a Sherlock Holmes sandwich for lunch as soon as this chapter is done, and then tonight is pizza and movie night around the Farshtey house

Back from Billund (with a sidetrip to a hotel on the west coast, about which more in a future entry), after a very successful BIONICLE story meeting. So I thought it would be a good time to answer some of the questions I get about how the story is put together and how the story meetings work.

We went into this meeting with a very, very basic idea for 2008, which had been approved by top management. The whole team was there -- myself, representing the actual writing end; Leah, the web producer; Lena, head of the team and in charge of overseeing the franchise as a whole; Birgitte, who works closely with Lena and does things like maintain the names list, put together the story bible from disparate sources, and much, much more; Christoffer, long-time head of set design for BIONICLE; and Christian and Jeppe, both of whom work for Advance, a Danish creative/advertising agency that has been working on BIONICLE since day one. (Christian, by the way, is the one who designed those maps of Voya Nui, Metru Nui, and Mata Nui we show in the comic.)

We started the meeting by going over the presentation that had been made to management last month, and then saw some prototype 2008 sets. Then I made a story proposal for 2007-2009 -- one which was in line with the concept for 2008, made the changes necessary to fit that concept, and also would hopefully set us up for some more exciting stories in the future. I was pretty nervous, because it was a proposal I believed in, and I would have felt bad if it had failed.

Anyway, long story short, it went over well -- but as usual, there was more work to do. Questions were asked; plot holes were sought for and filled; some things stayed the same, some things changed radically; ways were found to loop in old mysteries; and a lot of things were debated because we were discussing major, major changes to the story. Sometimes, in the past, story team debates can turn into hours-long arguments, but this time everyone was shooting for the same goal -- finding a way to make the story work. And everyone contributed, either with a question, an answer, or both.

The upshot was we did in four hours what we expected to need six or seven to do, and everyone came away feeling like we accomplished something. Assuming it gets the go-ahead from up top, I will be working on a story bible for 2008 before the end of this year. Then the 2009 concept will get discussed with management next year.

After the meeting was over, we adjourned to Leah's house for dinner. Then the next day I was off to a town called Ulfborg on the west coast of Jutland, where we would be spending three days in LEGO Club/Community meetings.

    More later ...

    Hey guys,

Back from my week in Henley-on-Thames, England, attending LEGO Club meetings. Productive meetings this time, but very long -- still, it is always nice to see the entire team, including Benie, Lina, Panja and Maaike, our European Club managers.

Couple of notes from the trip --

-- BrickMaster subscriptions are on the rise, thanks to the addition of exclusive LEGO sets to the offer.

-- We got to see a presentation on LEGO Universe, the new MMOG that's in the works -- very impressive. I am hoping to get to do some work with that project, if only on the promotional end. If you want to check out what is out in public, you can go to http://universe.lego.com

-- It is probably going to take me a while to wade through the 66 PMs I got while I was gone, so if you sent something this week, please have patience.

-- Starting work this week on a story bible for a new LEGO line slated to come out in 2009. I can't say anything about it, unfortunately, but I would imagine set images, etc. will be public sometime in the fall. I am also working with the LEGO Concept Lab on some ideas for 2010 and beyond, which is a lot of fun. (If I had not had the Club meetings scheduled, I would have been in Canada meeting with CL this week.)

Back from a brief trip to North Carolina (and warmth!) ... here's the news:

    1) We had a one-night story meeting to discuss first half 2009 story. We got the bare bones figured out, now I have to get to work on the story bible.

    2) We discussed any number of things, including beefing up BIONICLEstory.com in 2009 and possibly doing a serial or something similar that woud focus on the current universe while main story focuses on the new one next year ... I really like that idea, since there is no reason to believe we won't be bringing back current characters in future and it would be good to keep people "in touch" with them.

    3) Binkmeister presented some great ideas for possible web content -- he has done a wonderful job since taking on the BIONICLE.com web producer role.

    4) No new movie news, beyond that they are interviewing directors now.

    5) BIONICLE Legends #11 is going to need some rewriting so it can match up with the CGI animation being done for second half 2008 commericals.

    And that's about it!

    Hey guys,

Just back from a short trip to Raleigh, NC for a story meeting. Most of the team was over there for 2008 focus groups, so the franchise manager kindly carved out some time in the schedule for me to meet with them (possibly saving me a trip to Denmark next month).

    A few news items:

-- I saw for the first time all the proposed canister figures for 2008. There were 16 figures on display, of which 12 will be chosen to be sold. They looked quite different from the prototypes I had seen and apparently have gone over well in the groups.

-- The meeting was on BIONICLE 2009 and beyond -- so if you see someone on here spreading rumors that BIONICLE is ending in 2008, don't believe them. The story is CHANGING in 2009 in a lot of ways, but not ending. It was a very productive three hours, we got a ton done, and I came home with a few new projects I have to work on for the team. Extra work, but not complaining -- it's stuff I volunteered for to help advance BIONICLE.

The first meeting at which ideas are presented to corporate will be in mid-May, so that is when the franchise manager will discuss with the big bosses what we decided yesterday. Hopefully, they will like the ideas and we will be given the green light to proceed with story material.

Someone asked if I would post the original screen treatment for the planned 2010 movie (which, of course, is not getting made). Since this story will never get used for anything, I saw no reason not to share it. Please note, though, that this was a first draft -- it would almost certainly have been changed, maybe a lot, once it was run by TLC and Tinseltown Toons and Universal. But this was the original version.

A few things to emphasize before you read:
    1) This is NOT official story, as it was never approved by TLC, though the very general outline did come from the story team as a whole.
    2) The names of new characters are NOT approved BIONICLE names, and nothing exists on these characters beyond what is noted below.
    3) Due to the fact that the overall story had to be changed with the decision to end the line, none of the events below ever happened in official BIONICLE continuity. This should be read as a curiosity, nothing more.

    BIONICLE 2010 MOVIE
We open with a fast recap of how we got where we are – Mata Nui, exiled from his universe by an evil power, arrives on Bara Magna. He finds himself allied with the small villages that dot the region against fierce invaders from the north, the Skrall. In the end, Mata Nui leads the villages and their glatorian to victory, and discovers their shelters were in fact pieces of a giant robotic body. As a thank you to the warriors who helped them, he bestows new elemental powers on them and dubs them Toa.
We then include the “coin” scene from the end of Legend Reborn, as the coin becomes important. Mata Nui states that he needs to find a source of power for the body they have built, and that perhaps that source lies to the north – the Skrall, after all, had technology unlike anything the other villages have. But if he and his new friends are going to make this journey to an unknown land, they will have to be alert every step of the way.
Cut to Ackar, at night, sitting on the jungle floor with his back against a rock, sound asleep. The next moment, a burst of water hits him in the face and he wakes up, sputtering. Cut to Kiina, water still dripping from the end of her weapon. She tells him it’s time for his watch. Note that Kiina looks different than how we saw her last, with her armor and weapon changed.
The explanation for this becomes obvious. Mata Nui, Ackar and Kiina are camping in an abandoned Skrall outpost. There’s a cache of armor and weapons there. As Ackar outfits himself, he speaks to Mata Nui about their absent comrade:
    ACKAR
You know, Berix was really hurt when you said he had
to go back to the village. It was just a bad sandstorm,
and he got a little banged up. Nothing he hadn’t been
    through before.

    MATA NUI

He was here because of me … in danger, because of me.
I can’t be responsible for his safety.

Their conversation is cut off by a noise coming from the path behind them. Ackar volunteers to go scout and see what – or who – is back there. He starts back the way they came, his feet leaving molten footprints in the ground. He is trying to be stealthy … but as he gets close to the source of the noise, he loses control of his new fire power again and a nearby tree bursts into flame. Revealed in the light, he is an easy target for a Skrall warrior who was hiding behind a rock. The Skrall fires his weapon and hits Ackar, who goes down (though he is not badly hurt, just bruised).
Seeing this, Mata Nui flips out. His eyes glow, his voice as he shouts “Ackar!” takes on a weird echo effect – and suddenly the rock the Skrall was hiding behind becomes animated and grabs the Skrall, starting to squeeze. Ackar gets up at this point, looks from Mata Nui to the Skall and back, and says, “Hold it!” Startled, Mata Nui returns to normal, the rock goes back to being a rock, and the Skrall drops to the ground.
Ackar grabs the Skrall and asks him what he’s doing here. The Skrall explains that there is nothing left for him back in Roxtus and he wanted to go back home. He was hoping to join up with Mata Nui’s party, but got startled by the flames and thought Ackar was attacking. Kiina, awake now, doesn’t believe the Skrall for a second, but Mata Nui overrules her, saying he understands what it is to just want to go home. Kiina says that home is the last place she ever wants to see again.
Ackar has other things on his mind – like how Mata Nui just did what he did (Mata Nui has no idea). He’s also pretty sick of these new fire powers Mata Nui gave him, which almost just got him killed. Kiina laughs, wondering how any Glatorian can not want a powerful new weapon? At that moment, she loses control of her water powers and it starts to rain … but only on her.
Mata Nui asks the Skrall what his name is. The Skrall replies he has no name … he is just a Skrall warrior. Complaining that he can’t just call the Skrall “Hey, you!” the whole way, Ackar gives him a name. (This should be something along the lines of “bucket head,” insulting but not vicious.) The Skrall assures him he will carry the name with honor.
As they move out, Mata Nui asks the Skrall why his people left their homeland to invade the territory to the south. The Skrall reveals it was not by choice – they were forced out by invaders they could not defeat. As best as they could guess, the invaders came from inside a massive volcano, a place of great power. Sometimes in the night, the skies were lit up all around by the energies given off by the mountain. Skrall warriors were sent out to try to attack the volcano to stop the invaders, but none ever returned.
Mata Nui tells the others he is convinced this volcano may be what he is looking for – a source of power for the new mechanical body. But it is his fight, not theirs – they can turn back. He reminds Ackar that he was chosen to lead the defenders of the new city, and should be back there. Ackar cuts him off, saying any number of Glatorian can lead the force – only one is Mata Nui’s best friend. Mata Nui is touched, but obviously a little uncomfortable to be leading his friends into danger. As they walk away, none of them notice something emerging from a nearby mountainside to follow them … something that wasn’t there one moment, then appeared the next.
The party moves on, Ackar keeping a careful eye on the Skrall. The terrain changes from jungle to ice forest, marked by trees that make giant redwoods look like twigs. It’s only when they find one whose base has been partially exposed that they realize these are not “trees” – they are dozens of legs of beings like the Mata Nui robot body – just legs and feet from past Great Being projects, resting here, abandoned. They are in, in effect, a snow-covered junkyard, littered with massive BIONICLE pieces all in a jumble.
A perfect setting for an ambush.
The attack that follows is furious and frustrating for the heroes, as they are up against mechanicals with an advanced chameleon power and the ability to shapeshift. The enemy appears, attacks, and vanishes. This particular attack is primarily fire bolts, but strangely, they never seem to hit their targets – or do they? It’s Kiina who realizes the truth in the midst of the fight – the enemy isn’t aiming at them. They are aiming at the natural features around them, bringing down avalanches and felling “trees” to box the heroes in. And they’ve done a great job – all but one of the paths out of the region they are in is now completely blocked.
    KIINA
Don’t you see? They’re not trying to capture us
or kill us … we’re being herded, like sand grafs into
    a pen.

    SKRALL
These things forced my people from our lands,
    pushing us south.

    MATA NUI
South … away from the volcano. But the only
route they left open to us is to the north.

    ACKAR
So we’re being shoved toward the volcano.
    That’s never a good thing.

    KIINA
Wonderful. We can’t turn back … and going
forward doesn’t sound like such a great idea
    either.

    MATA NUI
Then stay here! No one asked any of you to come!

The party is taken aback by Mata Nui’s outburst – and so is he. He apologizes, saying he is not sure what is wrong – the further north they travel, the stranger he feels.
The group travels on, finding themselves at the edge of a mountainous area that is sort of Monument Valley meets the the Grand Canyon times 100. Massive mountains tower high in the air for as far as the eye can see, and in the center, bigger than all the rest, is the volcano. There is only one pathway leading into the mountainous region – we see the group go in and watch them as they disappear over a rise. Then the two mountains that flank the entrance suddenly slam shut.
Inside, the party hears the noise and reacts. But before they can go back and check as a group, Ackar points up ahead. There’s a clearing where it looks as if nature has gone to war with itself. Earth and rock are churned up everywhere, plant life is all over, either burned black or frozen solid. Hearing a groan, Mata Nui finds a jungle glatorian half buried under rubble. This is Oris, and he seems not at all surprised to see the group, though he is grateful for the rescue.
Oris explains he got caught in a “worldstorm” and just barely survived – “they happen here sometimes.” He asks Mata Nui how long he and his friends have been lost. Mata Nui replies that they aren’t lost. Oris smiles and assures Mata Nui that they will be.
The Skrall, who had run off briefly, now returns to say that the path they took to get into the region is now blocked off and he can’t see any other exit. Going forward is once again their only option. Oris offers to travel with them, and as they start off, Mata Nui idly asks him just how long he has been lost here. Oris’ answer startles and shocks the group: “Oh, 20,000 years or so.”
That night, the group makes camp, with Ackar providing a campfire. Now we see the group from the fire’s POV – and what we see is plant tendrils emerging from the ground and creeping toward the sleeping heroes. Sparks suddenly fly from the fire, igniting the vines and burning them up. As the fire awakens the group, we see eyes in the flames slowly fade away. We see the Skrall surreptitiously collect a piece of the fire’s kindling and stash it away.
The next day finds the party in an area of dense jungle – please note that all of these areas are still within the maze, so there are mountains all around forming the walls of said maze. The heroes are attacked by thick jungle vines – with teeth – and struggle to fight them off. It looks like a losing battle until Orsis says that he knows these plants, they hate water. Kiina is able to use her powers to drive the plants away. Again, we spot the Skrall snatching up a piece of plant and putting it away with no one seeing.
Once they withdraw, the team spots two Glatorian trapped high in the trees, wrapped up in vines. The Skrall hurls his shield and slices through the vines, freeing them. They are Tera and Likus, earth and ice Glatorian, respectively. They are also comic relief and con artists – they make their “living” hiring themselves out to competing villages, then staging mock combat and splitting the pay afterwards. They have only been stuck in the maze a short time. Both see the Skrall as a ticket to fortune – faked fights in which they beat him would do wonders for their reputations and the prices they could ask.
During the fight, the coin Mata Nui carries was knocked loose and ended up on the ground. When Mata Nui picks it up and turns, he is surprised to see the pattern on the coin rotate as well. A few more turns confirms that, yes, it happens every time, with the coin acting almost like a compass. Then, even more surprising, the entire pattern of the coin changes (a result, though Mata Nui does not know it yet, of the maze changing configuration). As he and the others move off, we see the face of the elemental plant lord appear in a tree trunk, watching them balefully.
As they continue through the maze, they emerge from the jungle area to an area where the terrain between the mountains is completely flooded. Mata Nui suggests using the nearby trees to make a raft. We next see the party sailing through the channels on their makeshift craft.
The waters suddenly become very violent. The raft overturns and shatters, dumping everyone in the drink. A huge hand made of water emerges from the river and grabs Mata Nui and Kiina, pulling them below the surface.
We follow them down, down into the depths and into the presence of the elemental water lord. Kiina wonders how it is they are able to breathe – the elemental lord replies that the waters answer to him, and drown only those he wants drowned. Asked by Mata Nui who he is and what’s going on, the EL explains that he is one of six ELs who dwell in this region. More than 100,000 years ago, they went to war with each other. All six came here in search of the power source in the great volcano, and all six became trapped.
The water EL senses that Kiina has an affinity to water and that Mata Nui is a being of great power. He offers them sanctuary in his domain, if they will agree to serve him, and tells Kiina she can be in command of his forces. Mata Nui asks about their friends up above. The water EL replies that they do not matter - -they are, after all, only “beings of earth and rock, flame and frost.”
Mata Nui immediately says no, but Kiina hesitates. (After all, isn’t what she’s always wanted to get away from the desert of Bara Magna?) The water EL states that since Mata Nui chooses not to agree, he can live with the consequences … if not very long. Mata Nui starts to drown. This makes Kiina’s decision for her – she attacks the EL. She reveals that she remembers him well – she once served in his army, and she remembers what that conflict did to this planet. Now she fights only for herself … and for her friends. She grabs Mata Nui and heads for the surface.
Behind them, the river starts to freeze from the bottom up, including the elemental lord. Kiina must swim rapidly to outrace the spreading ice. Once on the surface again, she finds the others have already made it to “high ground” – a small strip of stone against a stone barrier that blocks the river’s progress. She makes it there with Mata Nui just as the river freezes, but is injured in the process. Ackar uses his power to hold back the ice long enough for the two of them to make it to safety, but again it goes wild and almost fries the others.
Mata Nui checks his coin. As he looks at it the pattern changes completely on it (as the maze changes its configuration). Likus asks what it means. Mata Nui thinks he has put it all together – real mountains don’t change their locations, so these aren’t real mountains. They’re the walls of a maze, with the volcano in the center. Since the maze changes its form, it could be close to impossible to find your way out once you’re in.
Kiina says that explains why the elemental lords are trapped here, but not the strange things they have seen – burnt and frozen plant life, rivers freezing in seconds, etc. Mata Nui says there’s a very simple explanation – they said they were at war more than 100,000 years ago – and they’ve never stopped fighting, even in here.
That doesn’t address the immediate problem – the barrier. Ackar uses his flame power to melt a big hole in it, but stone immediately reforms to close it again. Frustrated, Ackar smacks the wall with his melee weapon, saying the blade is worth more than this fire power is. He tells Mata Nui that he understands his desire to go back and help the people he left behind, but that maybe that’s not what he was meant to do. Maybe he should think about the welfare of the friends he has made here, and stop worrying so much about the ones he’s left behind.
Oris, Tera and Likus know nothing about what Ackar is talking about, but they do see that Mata Nui is apparently the leader of this band. What are we going to do now, they ask? What’s the plan?
Mata Nui is torn. He looks at the ragtag party around him, including the injured Kiina, stranded between a frozen river and a rock wall. There’s no chance to send them back and go on alone, since they would never find their way out. And the pressure of leadership is getting to him – when the three new members continue to press him, he snaps, “I don’t know!” And at the same time, unknowingly sends out a wave of gravity power that makes the barrier explode.
The others all back away from him, afraid of Mata Nui for the first time. The others rush through the gap, not waiting for him.
They find themselves on a river, but not a river of water – a river of rock, jagged boulders moving at the speed of a rushing torrent down a slight incline. As they try to decide how to negotiate this passage – still staying far away from Mata Nui – Oris notices that the Skrall has disappeared. Ackar is concerned – he thinks the Skrall has run out on them, and that he never should have been welcomed into the group in the first place. Mata Nui intercedes, saying the Skrall offered potentially valuable information – Oris says it doesn’t seem like the party is doing any better than he did on his own, and he had no Skrall to “help” him. Ackar does not come to Mata Nui’s defense.
The party hears cry for help. It’s the Skrall. He is out in the middle of the river of rock, but has stumbled and is in danger of being crushed. Tera and Likus, unwilling to lose a potential meal ticket, team up to rescue him. After they are safe again, Kiina blasts Ackar from behind with a jet of water, slamming him into the side of the mountain. Mata Nui rushes over to help him back up. Both demand to know just what Kiina thought she was doing.
“Teaching him a lesson,” she replies.
    KIINA
    (to Mata Nui)
Ackar says he’s your friend – your best friend –
but I guess that’s only when he likes the gifts you
give him or he agrees with all your decisions.

    ACKAR
So you attacked me from behind??

    KIINA
I thought you’d like to see how it felt.

This gives Ackar pause. He apologizes to Mata Nui, saying he knows that everything MN does is with his friends in mind – all his friends, here and back where he came from. Sure, he hasn’t quite mastered this fire power yet, but that’s not Mata Nui’s fault. He should have remembered how hard it is to find a good friend – and that friendship isn’t just about standing by each other when it’s easy to do, but when it’s hard, too. And, by the way, what the heck was with lifting up that stone barrier??
Mata Nui explains to the group that he once had a great deal more power than he does now. For reasons he doesn’t understand, some of that power is coming back the further north he goes. But he can’t control it, and it could be a danger to the others, so maybe Ackar and the rest were right – maybe they should stay away from him.
It’s the Skrall who answers first, assuring Mata Nui that the party wants no one else for their leader, and that he is sure Mata Nui will lead them through this strange place. He tells them that the only way down the river is by skipping from stone to stone – but if you slip and fall in between them, you’ll be crushed for sure.
The team travels downriver in just that way, Ackar having some difficulty because his feet keep melting the rocks, and the Skrall being the most skillful. But waiting at the end are “rock falls” – the equivalent of a waterfall, where the rocks drop from a high ledge into another part of the maze. The team goes over – but this time, Mata Nui is able to control his power, using it to lower the group gently to the ground (controlling gravity is a handy thing, indeed).
They find themselves on a lava plain, with the volcano not very far off now, according to the coin map. Jets of fire shoot up from the ground at random intervals. Mata Nui calls for everyone to stay close together, but the Skrall is off collecting one of the small stones. He hurriedly rejoins them.
As they move through this hellish landscape, dodging bursts of flame and sudden lava flows, they come upon a strange sight: a large brazier, alight. Before anyone can stop him, the Skrall rushes forward and throws what he has collected – the stone, the kindling, a flask of water, a bit of vine, a piece of ice, and a handful of sand – into the brazier. As energies swirl from the brazier, he explains that he was not here on his own, as he had claimed. He was sent here by Tuma to make an alliance with the elemental lords. In exchange for gaining access to the volcano, they will help the Skrall crush the Agori and seize control of the planet.
The energies spread out – the flames grow into the fire elemental, vines grow from the ground into the plant elemental, the rocks form the stone elemental, etc., until all six are present. The bad news is, now that Mata Nui’s team has led the Skrall to the brazier so they could be summoned here, they have no use for any of them – the good news is, the elemental lords don’t like each other much either. So their attacks on the team evolve into attacks on each other, with the team caught in the middle. The team gets pounded, and while Mata Nui is able to save some of them, Tera and Likus are in danger. At the last possible moment, the Skrall has a change of heart and saves the two of them.
This becomes a running battle, with Mata Nui’s team doing a fighting retreat and trying to make their way to the volcano. They manage to briefly lose the ELs in the maze and make it to the volcano. Okay, so now they’re here – the general feeling is, now what?
Mata Nui staggers. He senses that the power in this volcano is the same power that once energized his old body. On a hunch, he hacks away at the stone of the volcano, and exposes metal underneath. The volcano is fake, he reveals. It’s not a true volcano, but a power plant. And somehow, they have to get that power back to the robot body in the desert and keep it away from the elemental lords.
Just then, the volcano rumbles and a big spark of energy shoots out the top – and Mata Nui and Ackar realize simultaneously that what they need is an eruption.
Mata Nui clears away an entrance to the volcano. The entrance has six spheres on it, each in a different color – black, green, white, red, blue, and sand – and a seventh in the center with the “yin-yang” symbol on it. Kiina and Oris, impatient, try various combinations, but nothing works and the ELs are getting closer.
Mata Nui suddenly stops them and points out that it took the two of them working together – his knowledge, and her power – to help the team escape the jungle. It took her skill in water and Ackar’s flame power to help them escape the frozen river. Maybe that’s what the symbols mean – the unity of the different elements. And all of them must be pressed at the same time.
But what about the seventh symbol, wonders Tera?
Mata Nui says he has been seeing that symbol since he got to this world … and though he isn’t sure what it means, he remembers it from his past life. So perhaps …
He reaches out and touches the center symbol, even as the others touch theirs. And the entrance slides open, revealing a metallic tunnel.
The party goes inside, but the entrance is blown apart before it can close. The ELs are closing in, and the team is harried by elemental attacks. The Skrall volunteers to stay behind and fight them off to buy Mata Nui time, and Tera, Oris and Likus volunteer to do the same. We cut between their desperate struggle outside of the volcano and Mata Nui, Ackar and Kiina racing through the complex tunnel system. They come upon an abandoned vehicle probably used in the construction of this place – it’s equipped with a powerful blaster on the front that could carve through rock. Ackar suggests they could use that to blast the core of the volcano and trigger an eruption, but it could mean their deaths.
They race to the core in the vehicle. Meanwhile, the fire and ice elementals have made it past their three allies and into the tunnels. Flame and frost attacks follow them as they fly through the tunnels.
At last, they make it to the core. Mata Nui asks Ackar and Kiina if they are sure they are ready to risk this – Ackar looks at Kiina, then back to Mata Nui and says, “Hey, that’s what friends are for.”
Mata Nui triggers the blast. The core overloads, sending sparks everywhere. Just as the fire and ice elementals reach the core, the place erupts! A massive amount of energy is shot up through the volcano as the core is destroyed, and with it goes the vehicle our heroes are in. The waves of force push out from the volcano, crumbling the walls of the maze. Oris manages to help Tera and Likus before they are crushed to a place of relative safety, but the elementals are not so fortunate. Even as Mata Nui’s craft disappears into the sky, Oris and his new allies taste freedom once again as the maze collapses.
The power emitted from the volcano arcs through the sky and strikes the robot body, fusing the pieces together and powering it up, as the Agori look on in wonder.
Meanwhile, we see the ship cartwheeling through space, and finally crash landing on a heavily forested world. After a few moments, the hatch opens and Mata Nui, Ackar and Kiina emerge, relatively unscathed. Ackar wonders where they are now – Mata Nui says what’s important for the moment is that they are whole and this place looks like a safe haven for now.
Suddenly, there is a terrible roar .. and as the camera pulls back, we see bio-mechanical dinosaurs roaming through the landscape …

    THE END

As we are just about to start production on the new film, thought it would be a good time to share some script news with you guys.

As you know, I got the chance to write the story for the movie, which was very exciting and fun to do. The script itself has been written by Sean Catherine Derek, who I must say has done a fine job on the project and has been very willing to work with me to make sure it came out "BIONICLE." It's been a very smooth process, and we will most likely be working together again on the planned 2010 movie.

To give you some background, Sean has been nominated for four Emmys for animation scriptwriting/editing, with one win (for her work on the Warner Bros. animated Batman series). She has also done work for other animated series, including Spider-Man, BKN's Kong and UBOS, and Mortal Kombat: Legend of the Dragon, among others. She has also written for children's comedy series and is a writer/producer on the live action Mortal Kombat Conquest series. Most recently, she finished writing and story editing for the Zorro Generation Z series.
