    New Things

Movies Tron: Legacy: The most beautiful thing I've ever seen, ever. Exit Through the Gift Shop: Kind of totally amazing. It's just too bizarre to be completely true. Check out this documentary even if you don't like documentaries. Scott Pilgrim vs The World: Hilarious. Loved it. CDs Tegan and Sara's Sainthood: Eh, I really like a few songs, but most of it is a bore. None as good as You Wouldn't Like Me from So Jealous. The Hush Sound's So Sudden: Not as good as their two newer albums, but I'm glad to have my Hush Sound colection complete. KT Tunstall's Tiger Suit: Love it.

    Cursed Cobra Statue

Hey look, a new review on the front page! I know I said I wanted this set so badly but was planning on watching my spending next year... but I bought it in 2010, and so I can still stay frugal in 2011. Oh yes, and a very cool set. Go read the review to see just how cool it is.

    Fire Lord

Not Ozai, the Hero Factory villain. He was the only HF2.0 at Wal Mart, just one of him. Let's just say the sum of his parts are greater than the whole. Neptune Carrier half-off isn't too shabby either. Gonna ask for Stormer, Surge and Evo for my birthday in a couple weeks.

    Series 3 Minifigs

I am sorry to report that I have contracted an illness... one with no cure. And it is spreading over the Pacific Northwest, and I hear people are already showing symptoms in the rest of the country. I am talking about the release of the third wave of collectable minifigures. The discovery was quite a shock. I noticed that a few of these were popping up for sale in various places, so I investigated, hoping to see clearer pictures of the sets. To my surprise, most of these sales were coming from either Washington State or Oregon. This surprised me, because I thought they were first surface over in Europe. But no; this time, the epicenter is in the Pacific Northwest. I did further research, trying to discover the true source, which happens to be a retail store. Not TRU, Target, Walmart, or even the Lego stores... no, it was the Fred Meyers store chain, which is isolated in the northwest, so thus the spread has been minimal. I went to check out my local store this morning before school. To my shock, they had them on sale. And this wasn't the typical arrangement I have been used to seeing, where there's just a box on the shelf. With such a distribution, usually one person snags it all up before others can become contaminated, thus sacrificing themselves for the public good. But there was no box here. Instead, all the individual bags were on clips across the Lego aisle, which seemed to deter mass-buying and let the figs spread further. Since their identification bar codes were missing, I tried to feel my way through. But since I was in a rush, I only made off with four (although I correctly guessed on three of them). After class, I had to go food shopping, so I stopped by the store again. A good amount of the figs were missing, but there were still plenty left. I took my time feeling around for just the right ones, and I wasn't alone. One of the store employees (apparently on break) was also investigating the minifigs, and trying to discover their identity under the wrappings. I chatted with her for a bit; she said that they had only been on shelves for a single day, and they were going quickly. I happened to mention that I was glad that they were tacked up individually, so somebody couldn't come in and make off with the whole box of them. And she mentioned that Hot Wheels guys did that all the time. (Ha, there are other toy fanatics out there far worst than us AFoLs) (Or as I would like say, YAFoLs... Young Adult Fans of LEGO Bricks. I still don't feel like a full adult yet) In the end, I made off with another three figs. I have caught the disease strong, but I think it's settling for now, and I should be able to make it into the new year alright. Now, for the figs. I got the tennis player, the snowboarder, the space cyborg / pirate, the mummy, the hula girl, the samurai, and the elf. Don't believe me? Well, I've got picts! (Low quality pict, to be specific. But hey, my camera was cheap to begin with and hasn't been working very well recently) Tennis Player I wouldn't have guessed that this is a tennis player if it hadn't been for the racket. (The racket, BTW, makes it easy to identify this fig in the bag... very distinct shape) I really like her torso... a plain, everyday torso, yet still female. The head has a new (I think) sly grin of someone who's ready for competition. And the hair is the same mold that came with the nurse, but now in orangish-brown. A very worthy fig! Snowboarder Yet another female, in a great winter outfit. The helmet is dark pink, which I believe is a new color. And the snow board is awesome. I don't know if the piece is new, but this one is nicely decorated with snowflakes. A great winter fig. Space Cyborg / Pirate This guy's all sorts of messed up. Peg leg, robotic arm, half his head mechanical. But he had the new space gun and a Blacktron logo on his torso. There's no doubting his evilness. Mummy Of the seven figs I got, this was the only one I didn't guess right when feeling the bag. (I mistook the scorpion for a hairpiece) Anyway, he's relatively creepy, and has printing of wrappings on his arms, legs, front and back torso. And, as visible on the head and torso front, there's some grimy green skin beneath the white wrappings. Don't let this mummy get ahold of you... or even worst, get attacked by his dark red pet scorpion, who I have now decided to name Fluffy. Hula Girl My personal favorite of the bunch, I think it's been a long time coming to have a Lego Hula girl. Her brown maracas helped give her bag away... that and the hair piece. The maracas would also double for chocolate apples, IMO. And there's a flower painted in the hair piece, which I think is a nice touch. The grass skirt is okay... although I think it would've been better painted on, rather than placed on like a cape (only over the legs). But overall, this is still a great fig, just waiting to say "Aloha" to you as you hop off the plane on Oahu. Samurai This guy's sword and helmet gave him away. Overall, he's a great addition, with a nifty torso and plenty of armor. I like him since I never got the ninja sets. Elf Strangely enough, soon after I found a bag that felt like it contained the elf (it was the shield that I could distinctively feel) some other people started feeling the bags, and mentioned that they were looking for an elf. I kept my mouth shut. Anyway, he's got a great scheme, with a large bow (is that a new design) and a cool shield. And it turns out, yes, he does have ears! They're not extensions of his minifig head, as I previously though. Rather, they're slight extension of his hair, which also happen to be colored yellow to match the head. It's easy to miss in most of the pictures I've seen of him, but he does have the ears, which makes the new hair mold remarkable. He's ready to march to Helm's Deep and help Rohan defend against the Orcs of Isengard. That's all for now. I admit, I still want a few more. Particularly, the ape man, and perhaps the baseball player (I found a couple in the store, but didn't want to grab too many) or the fisherman (which I've heard are the rarest of the bunch... and I actually did find one this morning, but it was gone by the time I got back) Other than that, I got pretty much all the figs I wanted from this line...
  6. I got the Reach soundtrack yesterday... There isn't much I could ever say that sounds more nerdy than this: Some of the tracks make me feel... emotional. There, I said it. Marty has to be one of the greatest composers of this generation.

    Brick: Fair Vs Con

This year, I attended both premier Lego conventions on opposite ends of the country: BrickFair and BrickCon. I've heard a lot of claims that BrickFair is better because... um, well, because so and so said so. Having been to both, I feel the need to properly compare the two conventions, and note the pros and cons of each. And, as a disclaimer, these are all my opinions. I am not saying that one convention is BY FACT better than the other. These are my preferences and feel free to disagree with them, but please do not edit my blog to reflect your views. Thank you. Traveling to Get There BrickFair was across the country from me, so I had to pay for a plane ticket over, and then endure the red eye flight, as well as all the stress that comes with flying in this day and age. It was expensive. BrickCon was relatively close... it was still a bit of a drive away, but I'm used to driving to Seattle, and I got to carpool which EW too, so it was to my advantage. (Maybe not EW's... he did, after all, have to put up with me.) But gas and all, it was still less costly than a plane ticket. Advantage: Con Sleeping Accommodations I got to stay at a friend's place when I went to DC, which was super convenient cost-wise and hanging-out-with-other-BZPer-wise. (Seriously, thanks a ton for that Ben!) I used to live in Seattle, but not anymore, so I had to organize a hotel room for us to crash in. And between organizing the reservation and keeping Swert and EW from making long distance calls that would drive up the bill, it was more stressful. Advantage: Fair Meeting New People I got to see a couple of new peeps at BrickCon this year, notably EW and Swert (about time I was able to bug him offline). At BrickFair, I met (for the first time) Chocolate Frogs, B6, Smeag, Nukaya, DV, Ray, Janus, Nuju Metru, Vezons Friend, Disky... and many more. It was a bit much. Advantage: Fair Hanging Out With Cool People BrickFair's highlight was definitely when I was chilling with other cool BZPers. The problem, of course, was that there were so many of them that it was hard to spend time with all of them. (Especially when Smeag hogged all of them at his apartment. ) There were fewer people at BrickCon, but I felt like we got to spend more time with each other, rather than just spending a little bit of time with each other. And just because they are not as active online or BZP staff does not lessen their coolness. Advantage: Tie The Bionicle Table BrickFair had some mighty cool MOCs... it helped that there were some star MOCist there, like DV and TOM, and that there were also the winners of the BBC Contest on display. And everything WAS more spread out. But, geez, the BrickCon Bionicle table was jam-packed with amazing MOCs. From Czar's massive creation to Arkov's highly-playable weapons to Kopakanui's THREE BUCKETS WORTH OF MOCS to a few creations by AFOLs whom I had never heard of but who still made some great stuff. And then there were a ton of members who sent in stuff, from Brickthing's Frost Cycle to Zorrakh's Destral Cycle (which took forever to set up properly but looked really cool in the end). Plus, we had cooler trophies. Thanks to a donation by Black Six and some purchased bricks, we were able to give out 4 prototype pieces and 5 trophies. So I may be biased, because I was in charge of setting up the Bionicle table, but I thought it had just as much awesomeness as BrickFair. Advantage: Con Other Themes There were plenty of other amazing theme displays around at BrickCon, from Big in Japan to Mecha to SPACE to Castle to Town and Trains. Sadly, I did not have nearly enough time to browse them like I wanted to, but even the quick glances I got impressed me. BrickFair also had some cool displays, but I felt the Con had some more impressive features. However, I must draw attention to the attitudes between the conventions. When I asked a theme coordinator if I could display a few of my small MOCs on their table at B.Fair, they either said no or pushed my stuff to the back where it couldn't be seen. But the folks at B.Con seemed more opened to having outsider MOCs mixed into their city streets. That, and B.Fair didn't have nearly enough Battle Bugs. Advantage: Con Loot I got some cool stuff at BrickFair. I snagged a few medium sized sets, won a couple of Exo Force sets, and in the raffle I got a set that made me roll my eyes. (But it's a secret because I may still post about it later) At BrickCon last year, I got zilch, but this year I got a couple of large sets on sale, won the same Exo Force sets again ( ) and somehow won the biggest raffle there. So... Advantage: Con Shortage of Time At B.Fair, I felt like we were rushing to do stuff, and then before I knew it I was back at the airport. At B.Con, I felt like we were rushing to meet all these deadlines, and the next thing I know we're driving back home. Both conventions went by too fast. Next year, instead of meeting at BrickFair, let's host a BZPower Fair, to take place a week before B.Fair, where we'll all hang out with each other and then have plenty of time to geek out at the Lego convention. Advantage: Neither So there you have it. Of course, some of these points will be wiped out by BrickFest, which sounds like it'll attract quite the crowd and is still rather close to me... so just another convention to look forward to.

    Buzz Lightyear Set

I got this set today. I noticed that it was on sale, and I thought it had some useful pieces (and some in purple) so i decided to pick it up. What I wasn't expecting was the model to be so... good! I bought a few other humanoid system sets at BrickFair, and they were mediocre in design. But Buzz... all the slopes are placed so well that he looks awesome and totally realistic. And although he comes with some stickers, the Star Command logo is printed on the tile, which is great. And the helmet actually works, and the wings actually fold up. Granted, in terms of playability, he fails in comparison to our favorite technic humanoids. No knees or elbows, and some of the joints are oriented funny for play. But, as a model, he looks awesome. Instead of instantly scrapping him for parts, I think I'll keep him together.
  10. ... The Last Airbender Part One certainly didn't flow. Like, at all. It was really just a missed opportunity. It proved that a good Airbender movie could be made... it just wasn't. Which made the movie really frustrating. I'd give it 4/10. Let's start with the things I liked: 1) Of course, the source material is awesome. It shone through the ###### sometimes. 2) Most of the casting was good. Sokka was the only one, and maybe Pakku, that I thought... "What is this nonsense?" 3) The nod to Hama at the beginning was cool, I wonder if they'll feature her in part three. 4) The first shot, being exactly like the intro to the show, was cool. 5) I loved a lot of the designs. The locations (for the most part) the costumes, art style etc. 6) Speaking of art style, even though it seemed a bit... cheap... at times, I actually kind of liked it that way. It seemed almost like a painting rather than a movie at times. 7) A lot of the fights were very cool. 8) Yue, Zuko and Iroh all did as good as they possibly could with Shyamalan directing. That is, I didn't facepalm very often when they were talking, unlike the other characters. Now for the bad stuff... 1) There were only two times I thought "Oh, that's Sokka!" Once, towards the beginning, when Appa smashed him with his tail and he said "It's trying to eat me!" or something along those lines, another time when they were fighting with the Earthbenders and he said something along the lines of "A little help here!" or something. The rest of the time he was an entirely dead and emotionless character that I didn't feel any connection to at all. This is the only character I would get a new actor for in the sequels. 2) Katara never got angry. Therefore, she wasn't Katara. Seriously, it's like they completely drained the character from... everyone. Despite this, I think the actress could make a good Katara with better writing and directing. 3) Aang laughed, like, once? Once again, not the actor's fault. I think he could make a good Aang. 4) They changed all the pronunciations. That wouldn't really bother me, but they were trying to make the names sound more "correct", which really made it jarring because most everyone talked with Californian accents. lolwut 5) WHERE THE HECK WAS SUKI? I MEAN SERIOUSLY. 6) I missed Ko, the Face Stealer, but I understand they had to cut back on the characters. Also, a nod at cabbages would have been nice. 7) WHERE WAS SUKI? 8) Appa and Momo looked pretty bad and were set pieces instead of characters. Pretty sure they never even named Momo. Completely worthless character in the movie, great character in the show. Appa was a car for Aang, which is very sad since he is quite... compelling... in the show. XD 9) So much explanatory dialogue, most of it completely worthless. The movie assumed everyone watching was a complete cool dude and couldn't piece anything together. The worst was the narration... which often was just redundant. For instance, at the very beginning Katara narrates, which works in the intro to the show but just felt clumsy here. She's like, "My mother was taken captive in a Fire Nation raid and we never saw her again." And then a bit later, in a much more natural and fluid way, she says in a conversation with Sokka, "They've taken Aang away, just like they took away mother!" Totally redundant. It would have been much better if they just cut most of the narration and just let you SEE and EXPERIENCE the movie, rather than just straight up telling you the plot. There were so many perfect opportunities to SEE what was going on, and then they just told you and moved on. Another example is towards the beginning, during a traveling montage, Katara narrates (again DX) and says "Aang told us that he ran away and crashed in the ocean and froze himself and stuff" and then later, towards the end, Aang remembers (and you see) that he ran away. You just see him run away though. They could have shown him crash in the water and freeze himself. Then it would have been good. But instead... 10) WHERE WAS SUKI? She's kind of a main character, you know. I mean seriously. 11) Why was the Fire Nation throwing bombs into the city even after it was swarming with their own troops? lolfriendly fire 12) Firebender not being able to create fire really slowed down a lot of the action. 13) WHERE WAS SUKI? I was so frustrated with this I screamed it out as the credits rolled, eliciting some laughs from fans of the series seated nearby. 14) What did they do to Zhao's character? They totally flipped him on his head. In the show he is overconfident and power hungry, in the movie he is unsure and kind of timid. What? 15) Shyamalan managed to make the Fire Lord completely unimposing by making him walk around serenely in his Theed-inspired grounds, and sit in a well-lit hall with no GIANT FLAMING WALL OF FIRE AND SHADOW in front of him. The mystery of the Fire Lord was one of the most intriguing parts of the show. 16) Zuko's conversation with that kid, talking about how he got his scar, was one of the most baffling scenes in the history of cinema. Couldn't he have just had a bad dream about it instead of trading stale lines with some little kid? what the heck 17) Earthbenders trapped in a concentration camp made of DIRT was completely baffling as well. Also, Aangs speech to them was weird and totally cheesy, not in a good way. 18) No mention of the comet until the end and lack of explanation on the Avatar State were confusing. Why is this kid glowing? ... They say. I could just go on and on... "But tell me," says Shyamalan, "dear Bunda, how could I have made this movie awesome?" To be perfectly honest, this movie was frustrating. It got very close to being awesome at times, but it was just off. To fix it: Get a new Sokka. Hire the head writer from the series to write the next movie and fire Shyamalan as the head writer. Get a new director. You can let Shyamalan produce, if you want. Get those kids some acting lessons. They have potential, they just didn't quite live up to it. Aang be more fun, Katara and Zuko be more angry, Sokka be more silly (I'm fine that they wizened him up some, but he can be responsible without being totally stale), and Iroh needs to like tea more. He only mentioned it once. Him getting a pedicure was a nice touch, though. Introduce Roku? Make Kyoshi look less like a man. Make the Spirit World more than a path in a forest and a cave. Give Momo and Appa personality. Pai Sho? Very important. I guess they won't be doing The Order of the White Lotus, then. A cameo from the Bounty Hunter would have been nice. Suki. Make the movie 45 minutes longer so you can add more goodies like Suki and the Bounty Hunter. It wasn't that long. No narration. Except at the beginning. FFFFFFFFFFFSSSSSSSSSSS I also watched Twilight last night for lols. Super boring. Bella and Edward were completely baffling and it seemed like the only reason they loved each other was because Edward thought Bella looked delicious and he is rabidly curious to find out why he can't read her mind. Doesn't seem to really lover her, though. Bella just likes Edward because he watches her while she sleeps, puked when he first saw her, and looks like a diamond in the sun. Also apparently he's supposed to be the hottest thing ever. ??? The only scene that was slightly entertaining was the baseball game, and that ended really quickly, and yeah... some of the side characters seemed interesting, but it never paid attention to them, because Bella and Edward were too busy staring at each other and gushing about how much they inexplicably "loved" each other. No chemistry at all, which is kind of weird because they apparently live together IRL or something?
  11. Not as good as I thought it would be. 6.5/10 Also got my Lego order in yesterday. Buklt all the Hero Factory sets. Very nice indeed. However I count three completely different shades of silver between them. Simultaneously disappointing and interesting.

    Inception

Incredible. One of the best movies I have ever seen. I dunno why everyone seems to say that it was confusing, it seemed straightforward enough to me. The gunplay got a little tiresome after a while, though.
  13. Just watched it tonight. Very good, well worth the 42 minutes. Kind of a dissatisfying ending, though. Which makes me happy to hear there's a sequel in the works. Here's hoping it's a full movie...

    Signs

    I'd seen some of it before, but was too freaked out at the time to finish it. But I watched Signs in full tonight... very good. Gave me the creeps a lot. But it wasn't just full of cheap scares and gore and stuff that a lot of other thrillers/horror/suspense flicks have. This was good. So if you haven't seen it find a way. Netflix has it on instant watch, if you have an account. Also the creepiest parts were towards the beginning... with the creature on the roof... I saw something move. ;_;
  15. It fell off the cone. ;_; Just got back from Toy Story 3 (totally unrelated). So. Good. Takes the place of my favorite CGI movie from Incredibles and How to Train Your Dragon. Come to think of it... takes the place of my favorite animated movie from Emperor's New Groove. Wow, that was great. The baby staring at the moon... the monkey... so scary. That movie was surprisingly intense.

    And Done

Just finished watching The Last Airbender for the second time. Man, that show is good. I would buy it but the neighbors own it (where I was watching it) and it's on Netflix Instant too, so eh.

    The End

A completely satisfying end to LOST. Also; started watching the first season of it with my grandma in place of Lord of the Rings. Also; Mass Effect movie confirmed and Matthew Fox should be Shepard. Also; I am kind of terrified of them mangling said movie. P.S.; But after I see what they do to the Last Airbender I will probably have seen the worst series mangling of anything ever. Edit: P.P.S.; Where were Walt and Mr. Eko? Seriously, I want to know what happened to them... and what was up with Walt's crazy powers...

  21. Fang Island – the name brings ideas of a castaway living on a faraway island in the middle of the sea, trapped. Storms ravage and starvation is a constant threat. However, once you listen to the first track on Fang Island's self-titled sophomore record (that's a new one), you'll realize that life on an island isn't so bad – you got sun, waves, and of course you'll get a nice tan. Let me explain what I mean. Fang Island is hyper-active indie rock that's happy enough to make you grin, no matter the mood. The overlapping riffs and bleeping synths makes for a powerful experience. They describe themselves as "everyone high-fiving eachother," which pretty much makes the rest of my review completely redundant. The first track, Dreams of Dreams, opens with sounds that are either fireworks, or popcorn popping. For the sake of the review, I'm going to with fireworks. Sounds a bit more poetic. It slowly opens into happy keyboards overlapped with guitar riffs that end up as a great opener for the rest of the album. It gradually fades into (most likely synthesized) organs that are almost church-worthy. It closes with overlapped vocals, choir style. However, the organization just leaves you hopeful, not bored. The rest of the album is an explosion of energy, with stadium ready power chords (Sideswipe), easily danceable headbang-able drums (Daisy), and shimmering synths (Davey Crockett). There's not much to say on the vocals. Usually the songs are simply instrumental, while others go with more choir chanting or "oh"s and "yeah"s. I found myself mentally comparing it to Anamanaguchi throughout the listening process. The album slowly changed from overpowered electro-rock to slower synth powered tunes later on in the album, but you'll hardly notice the transition. Fang Island definitely isn't the gloomy island scene described above. It makes you think that that guy on the island is pretty lucky, and that he's probably a pretty good guy and that maybe you could be friends sometime. You'll be wanting to jump up and down and air guitar the whole time – "everyone high-fiving eachother" is definitely the exact definition. They manage to pull if off without sounding pretentious, on top of that. If you do decided to buy it, get the AMAZONMP3 version – comes with an extra song (and not a remix at that!), and is only $6. TRACKLISTING: Dreams of Dreams Careful Crossers Daisy * Life Coach Sideswiper * The Illinois Treeton Davey Crockett * Welcome Wagon Dorian Patterns on the Wall [AMAZONMP3 Exclusive] 8.5/10 * = Recommended Tracks
  22. I went into Alice with pretty low expectations due to mixed reviews, but in the end I really liked it. There was one moment, when the Hatter was remembering something... exactly like Wonka. Same actor and director, I know, but still... Anyway, I quite liked it. The White Queen was hilarious. (I need to read the books, I know practically nothing of it... and I always imagined the Jabberwocky to be more bird-like.) ~Bunda
