There are two reasons for this:

  • [*]Firstly, a spherical ball will bounce more predictably. Some games use non-spherical balls (such as American Football or rugby) and part of the game is the non-predictability of the bounce.

  • [*]The other thing is that if you inflate anything it will tend to form a sphere; with a sphere the pressure inside the ball is equal throughout the inside of the ball - this is why when bubbles are blown, the are always spheres.
