The Truth About Bionicle's End

Sumiki

Recently, there have been many blog entries and much speculation on the end of Bionicle in 2010. There have been many "sources" cited: namely, European fansites.

I, for one, don't trust it. Here's why:

  • It's easy to misconstrue anything foreign. People who don't know English well, plus horrific translation software, is not much "proof" in my book. In many cases, no quotes are provided.
  • Bionicle's sales are at an all-time high. Why would they cancel a line that lines their pockets with millions every year, while the CEOs are sitting at their desks, twiddling their thumbs?
  • If it was to be canceled, people at LEGO would have known by 2009. Why would they sign a multi-year deal for multiple movies featuring the storylines of sequential years if there would be no 2011?
There are more, but those are my main three arguments. Feel free to argue against them. :)

And then there are the SOOPER TOP SECRET SPOILERZ a few members (myself included) have obtained that supposedly prove the end.

They're very climatic, yes... but 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008 were all very climatic years, so how is that new?

I don't know whether Bionicle is selling at it's highest level in years but it's not making up 50% of sales like you said in one of your posts.

I don't understand, from a business perspective, why LEGO would be so anxious to end a line that accounts for 50% of their sales, an all-time high, just after they sign a big 3-movie contract. It makes no sense, therefore I do not believe those rumors. They are not founded in solid logic nor based in factual evidence.

Actually, BIONICLE is not our biggest-selling line and hasn't been in a while. It sells well, but gets outsold by Star Wars and I believe LEGO City these days.

Hmm, you bring up an interesting point as always, Minifig. I'll have to check that out, as I was sure Greg said that Bionicle accounted for that much.

Still, would they get rid of a line that brings in 10%? (I doubt that the sales percentages are really that low, but I'm going with my lowest guess here.)

Just because it originated in another language doesn't mean people can't translate properly or may interpret things wrong. Would you distrust any news Gatanui brought us, because his source was in German?

Also, currently it's replace, not remove, so it's not like they're going to chuck the Bionicle-action-figure-ness in favour of a relaunch of Paradisia. ;)

For one, it's highly improbable that many people who look up these rumors online know the source language very well. I would trust it 100% if there was a human translation, and not a computer's.

How would they know that a new line would bring in as much? They might just anger people and alienate them from LEGO if they removed Bionicle.

I'm thinking about a computer-translated Czech site that was later translated via human and the two yielded completely different results.

Old news is old.

This is new stuff. That site was...Eh. Not completely trustworthy.

Also this.

Plans change in terms of Movies. It's been stated that if TLR doesn't sell well, the other movies will not be made.

Do we have any proof Bionicle is selling as well as we think it is? This may be just my store, but in my Wal-Mart and Target, a Bionicle set hasn't been sold for months now. The shelves are packed full, with canisters on top of canisters, and nobody is buying them.

Also, if it is selling well, then that still doesn't rule out the theory they're ending Bionicle and then replacing it with something incredibly similar, just to get a fresh reset.

Also, spoilers I have are the same as Brickthing's.

If something is not doing as well as it used to, then the company needs to look at what they can do to promote sales. Or remove it and, perhaps, replace it with something better and will draw attention and more sales.

If TLG is shutting down Bionicle, but is supposedly going to replace it with something, then I would guess they have something else similar in mind that they hope is going to draw in more money. (10 years is a long time for a LEGO theme. Aside from City I guess (and maybe Castle?), pretty much everything is on/off. Pirates, various playthemes--even Star Wars has resorted to delving into the Expanded Universe that fans might know about from video games.)

Then again, you make good points. Bionicle would, I would think, be doing well enough for TLG. And good point about the movies. And there was something I was thinking about: the story bible GregF keeps mentioning. Quarterly meetings to discuss future story. Those are still happening, right?

Dude, TLR made #5 in DVD sales. Plus, it's possible that people are not buying sets due to the economy.

This is the news article on the DVD sales. TLR ranked ahead of the fifth season of The Office.

Just because it made #5 on the DVD sales in Canada for a day or two doesn't mean it's selling great as a whole.

Here's the quoted article:

Never Mind, you beat me. Lol.

So yeah. Just a few days after it's released, when the hype is at a high level.

Canada, I don't think, has as many fans as the US does, and ranking ahead of The Office anywhere is an accomplishment in itself.

True Enough. Even I have to admit that. :P

I miss the days when we got the sales data every year for BIONICLE, so we could judge for ourselves, instead of making assumptions.

Exo-Force had story planned out as well....

Yeah, but I don't think Exo-Force had quite a large following as Bionicle. Given more time it could've...

it was cancelled because many anime fans were being annoying about it being too similar to anime

Pirates was one of Lego's best-selling themes, but one year they took it away and it didn't come back for a long time.

Refreshing the brand?

If TLG decides Bionicle needs a break, then that's what'll happen. I'm not saying it will, but it's a possibility. Ten years is a long time, and after so long, anything can become mundane. Even if sales don't drop, TLG might just decide that, for the good of the brand in the long-term, Bionicle needs a break.

"Speaking of 2010, indeed, the BIONICLE range will see major changes. LEGO launches in January 2010, redesignated the 6 characters favorite characters from fans since launching the range in 2001. As you know, you can find: Toa Tahu, takanuva, for Gresh Heroes Piraka but also a Rakhshi and skrall. This assortment Collector will also receive a mechanism for collection with 6 elements "golden" in each can transform into Toa Tahu Tahu Gold and give it enough power to win the final battle. And thus conclude the saga beauty Mata Nui and Bionicle story that we know since the launch of the range.

In September 2010, a new set after a new line and pulled a new story hit stores.

This range is not set LEGO Ben 10 Alien Force, which also released in January 2010.

Of course I could share more with you about this new wide release in late December / early January. "

How confident are you about that translation?

I'm fluent in French and the last bit translates best as:

"And thus concludes the beauty of the Mata Nui saga and the story of BIONICLE as we've known it since the product range was launched. In September 2010, a new set line (coming from a new product range and taken from a new story) will come out in stores."

So BIONICLE isn't ending, we're just getting a total reboot of the story. Maybe along the lines of new setting, new characters, or even a new name. It could be as drastic as the transition of Throwbots to BIONICLE or it could be as benign as BIONICLE Part 2.

So before we go running around like the sky's falling, let's make sure we've got all the facts first, okay? ;)
