  1. great going. try using blue light in the dark though, it generally isn't good to have so much black in your scenes.
  2. 11. really close to 7. but the general silhuoette of 11 seemed better.
  3. I logged in to comment on this... When I opened the link I expected a mediocre piece of art. but this is plain amazing! Personally, I like there to be more robot parts than flesh, but I wont complain.
  4. It's never been done before (that I know of), but I have made a 100% custom mask made of plastic, that was printed off of a 3D printing website called shapeways. I modeled the object in Blender 3D, then simply sent it to the site and made my order. It was printed in a strong and slightly flexible white plastic, and I received it in the mail a few days ago! I then finished off the process with a gold paint finish. But anyhow, here it is! . NOTICE: A topic to sell this mask and its partner (there are two) will be created in the "buy/sell/ trade section of the BZP marketplace within the upcoming days. Details about the Ignika and it's creation: Growing up as a fan of Bionicle, I have always been in amazed at the creativity of the Bionicle community. I loved the legendary story, and the amazing sets, but most of all I loved building with them. From the day I popped Tahu out of his canister, I have never stopped trying to add my own Ideas to this masterpiece lego has created. I have been a proficient 3D modeler for the past few years, and yes, I became one for that very reason. 3D art is an amazing realm that allows a person to take their ideas and transform them into something they they and others can look at and appreciate. But I didn't want to stop there, and so this project grew. I set out, and after putting many hours into measuring, 3D modeling, and researching (mostly modeling ) I finally got a 3D object. If you are not familiar with 3D modeling, the closest thing I can compare it to is an odd mixture of origami, and sculpting . Because of this, I made sure to pay attention to the smallest details to make sure that the 3D model would come out looking as if it were a real lego piece, fit snugly on a bionicle head (which it does), and be sturdy. In the end I had taken a real piece of Bionicle history, and made it into a tangible object, through a printing company called shapeways. I was amazed when I saw how well it had turned out (and so exited that my hands were actually shaking. XD) The printing was highly detailed, and smooth. The plastic is also very strong, somewhere between the stiffness of the 2001 masks, and the Glatorian helmets. Because of this, I would bet that falls from hand height would be o.k. Like anyone, I wanted the Kanohi to look like it was ancient and powerful. To do this I spray painted it black, then mixed a couple shades of metallic paint to get a color that is very close to the Bionicle gold. I used a dry paint method to get it to look worn, as you can see in the picture below. The gold is shinier than the bionicle gold, but not enough so that they don't fit together. All in all I am VERY happy with how this turned out, and it sure does feel good to own an object this rare! reference: http://biosector01.c...NOLG_Ignika.png Gold comparison (on Iruini): http://www.brickshel...ks/sdc18905.jpg Comparison with Brutaka gold: http://www.brickshel...ks/sdc18888.jpg Before being painted: http://www.brickshel...ks/sdc18902.jpg Vezon with Ignika: http://www.brickshel...ks/sdc18894.jpg on Tahu: http://www.brickshel...ks/sdc18900.jpg Angle: http://www.brickshel...ks/sdc18887.jpg Back: http://www.brickshel...ks/sdc18883.jpg FAQ: "Why are the antennae curved forwards?" I actually had not known that there had been a 3D version of the mask in "Bionicle Heroes". Because of this I had to rely on the two dimensional picture of the mask. Because of this I took some artistic liberty (as I did with the crest on the forehead), and did what balanced the mask out. By doing this, I could also take advantage of having a curved line run through the mask, rather than having a harsh angle (like in Bionicle Heroes) "Why is the mask so flat?" On seeing the mask, I felt like it belonged closer to the time of 2001, and Mata Nui. It seemed very reminiscent to me of the simpler designs that existed in those years. Feeling this, I wanted to make the mask feel at home on the Toa mata, as well as later sets (who at times had very large heads XD ). I used Tahu's head as my main reference, because of this the top goes about as far back as his. The mask curves forwards towards the mouth (similar to the noble ruru), and the side pieces go just past the circles on the side of the head. Looking at the Images I have up, there aren't really any good ones at a side view (on a head), so maybe I'll try and get some up. "Does it fit well?" I like this question, because this actually caused me a ton of problems XD. When I got the mask, the first thing I did was try and stick it on a toa head. Bad idea. I had made the mouth piece a fraction of a millimeter to big, and I couldn't get it off. Finally with the help of a flat head screwdriver I popped it off. After that I carefully sanded it down a little, and it now fits quite well. Let me know what you think, Any comments are appreciated (other than spam ). I plan on creating a topic to sell it sometime soon.
  5. very nice. I have a few comments to make on the artistry however. Try and lay the images on the page in a more interesting way, make them overlap, and flow so that the eye just naturally jumps from one to the other. also it is quite difficult (in the darker scenes) to tell where one image ends and the next starts. layering will help this, as well as adding borders. I'm also going to mention that in your more recent ones, the images are getting quite noisy. It is a pretty big detraction, and I really would prefer less realistic renders ( ie. the old blender renderer/ simpler materials) than realistic ones that are super noisy. Sometimes the scenes feel a little cluttered, and it is hard to tell what I should be focused on (or what I'm looking at at all). Try getting the message through in the simplest way possible. Contrast with the character and their background is KEY! and it is so important to make sure that the character's silhouette is clear, and is in an extremely defining pose ( yeah, probably shouldn't have angles where parts of the body are in front of others). I also have to say that while the modeling work is great, this could be SO much better, if only a little texture work was done. some of the object would look a ton better, and I feel that the characters would be much more appealing to look at. I know with some small adjustment these can look even cooler. keep up the great work!
  6. It's been a long time, but I'm finally finished! plan to send my model off to shapeways sometime this week, but until then, here is a 3D render of the to be printed model! Also, I have a question. Am I allowed to make another topic for this in the art forum?front: http://www.brickshel...oj/molfront.pngside: http://www.brickshel...roj/molside.pngback: http://www.brickshel...roj/molback.pnghttp://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/816136s/Moviesceneredoproj/mask_of_life_gold_render.png
  7. yup, they are dust particles yeah, I overdid the depth of field in cycles, and didn't want to re-render it :Pthere isn't much to see, considering that most of the work is post processing and textures, but here are some screens:http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/816136s/Moviesceneredoproj/screen3.pnghttp://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/816136s/Moviesceneredoproj/marblesscreen1.pnghttp://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/816136s/Moviesceneredoproj/screen2.png
  8. I made this in Blender 3D. It is 100% 3D art. and yes, I know it's WAY to blurry sorry about that! http://www.brickshel...tdustlight4.jpg
  9. even though they are sketchy, I love the style! I want to see more finished works from you!
  10. It was more or less a test. I didn't spend too long on it (which account for the messyness in some areas, like the trees, and the shading) probably no more than 3 hours.
  11. O.K update. I've been busy, but I now have some work to show! here is a WIP model that I threw together over the past two days. This is NOT done, it will still undergo extensive work. anyhow, here it is, let me know what you think of it so far.
  12. great! I'll have to look into that. Right now, what I'm concerned about though is the plus rod either being too loose, or too thick to fit into the mouthpiece. I just finished it, and If my measurments are correct, it should be within .01 mm of the actual lego plus rod... but you never know with these things! I've been looking at different materials, they all seem to have different ups and downs though, so i've been having a hard time deciding! In the end, If enough people want these, then I will possibly print them in different materials. Aliminum looks good, and is a LOT cheaper than... lets say gold! , but the only negative about it is that it has a lower level of detail, and the mask would have to be almost twice as thick as a plastic mask (which would be very inconveniant). Right now I'll probably go with plastic, seeing as it's slightly flexible (to keep those antenna things from breaking), and you can get some really cool metallic effects wih paint (plus, then it can be gold). example: http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5131/5400615144_cfa6b4da4a.jpg
  13. From the company I've been looking at for printing, I know that at most it shouldn't be more than $60, at the least it will be $30 though. So yes, you are right it is a bit pricey, but I think people are willing to pay to own a mask that is one of a kind. If not, then I'll keep it for myself. So I wont be taking too much of a risk.more information will come sooner on... I'll probably start the 3D work this weekend. Once that is done, it will probably take 2-4 weeks to get a pic of the final product on here.In case you are skeptical on my ability of making a decent mask in 3D, I've made LOTS of them... way too many one example is my avatar, lol
  14. I do 3D artwork, and was thinking of making the ignika from the voya nui online game this:I would make it in 3D, then send it off to shapeways, or some other 3D printing company. If things work out as planned, It would be nearly indistinguishable from an actual mask made by lego. I have a few questions though, first off, would you buy it? it would be the only mask of its kind in the world. Also, how much do you think it should be sold for? Should it be in plain white plastic (for you to paint yourself), colored (if so, which color?), or metalic?thanks!
  15. I was just thinking that the art furum needed some love... then I saw this 0_0 WOW, the design and lighting looks awsome. I especially like the light on the inside of the sheild.
  16. pity, right? who knows... maybe a Michael Bay will come along and revive it? yeah, the rigging is driving me to insanity going at a pace of only about a few hours a week, I've been working on rigging it for a couple months... But a good rigger makes the interface of the rig as simple as possible for that very reason of not making the animators pull their hair out thanks what do you mean by "showing the articulations" ? do you mean posing it? because the rig isn't done sadly :/ but there is a partially rigged image in the first post :)thank you everyone!
  17. lol, thanks . Am I the only one who actually thinks that set is slightly cool? thanks, I actually started this MOC with the head. It was going to just be a random Makuta but I recognized the resemblance and decided to do Teridax And again, next time I get a chance I'll change the legs :)Again, thanks everyone!
  18. here is Takua in a grassy field that I made let it be known that the mountains in the background are an Image (which I do not own, I found it on a Google image search) Also the Takua Model is B:NG's. What I did was Make the grass, light the scene, Partially texture Takua, and edit it. All the work was done in blender 3D, and GIMP. enjoy!http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/816136s/Moviesceneredoproj/grasstakuadone1.png
  19. Thanks guys, I definitely didn't expect such good feedback... I was under the impression that it was one of my less good MOCs. I updated the first post, I'm surprised no one mentioned the green wings. They looked perfect, but were the wrong color. Because of this I decided to change their color in Gimp. Thanks. I've been looking at those legs, and I'd agree that I should definitely try and fix the joints up. They are quite awkward from a side view. I'll agree, that would look cool However I think I'd have to get a bit better at photo editing before being able to do that, lol.sorry, I can't respond to everyone individually. But know that your comments are still appreciated!
  20. thanks guys hey Eeko, I remember you WAYY back when. you're the guy who originally modeled Bomonga's mask! and no, I'm not Rigging it like the Miramax movies as I am fully against bendy metal . I'm also not rigging it like the set, There are many more points of articulation and moving pieces here. lol, that's probably because of the shoulders armor That's why I decided to change it (as you can see in one of the links in the first post) The fact that it's a "clay render" as we call it in 3D land probably doesn't help the cause either.
  21. not much to say, but here is an alternate version of Vakama hordika I made in blender 3D, rendered in Lux render. He's not yet colored, but that probably wont happen for a while. here's a few other images:head: http://www.brickshel...j/headfront.pngpossible material: http://www.brickshel...ka_material.pngpartially rigged model: http://www.brickshel...kasimplerig.pngtorso detail: http://www.brickshel...j/bodyfinal.pngnewest version of the shoulder details: http://www.brickshel...oulderarmor.pngback: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/816136s/Moviesceneredoproj/finalbodyback.pngcomment help motivate me to do more work like this, so if you like it let me know. Thanks for looking
  22. This is my interpretation of makuta teridax. I kind of went for cartoony proportions rather than an actually menacing makuta.brickshelf gallery (when public): http://www.brickshel...ry.cgi?f=488147Comments are appreciated, critisism is even more appreciated. I like raw non sugar coated critisim BTW it's the best way to improve. just let me know any little or big thing that's bad, boring, or just doesn't make sense to you. thanks!
