More Shameless Self Promotion

Trying to break the habit of hyphens in the entry name here. But otherwise, just throwing out a plug for my Epic Contest #6 entry "The Alliance". I'm excited to see how it does in this round, as I was really proud of the story.   I'm also relieved the theme this time around was epics that were already finished. I've been a bit worried about how Rebirth is turning out. I haven't had as much time to work on it as I would've liked. So I was glad to not suddenly feel the urge to chagne it to f

More Arting

So having been struck by the doodlebug a second time, I've come up with the vocalist to this band I'm apparently creating. I was going for a grungier look, but as somebody pointed out elsewhere the hair is definately more of a mullet than the typical long hairdness you'd expect from a guy like Cobain or Grohl.   I'm really glad with how the pose turned out. I was going fo a non-chalant hodling the mic and stand behind his back. Originally I was going to have him holding the stand rather than

More 20 Year Old Spoilers

I'm currently battling my way through the 6th Dungeon of the original Zelda. A few years ago I picked up the Zelda Collector's Disc, and have only now gotten around to playing it.   I have to say it's probably the hardest Zelda I've played in a while. The drop-rate is low to the point of frustration, especially when you only start with 3 hearts every time you die. There's no map to speak off for the overworld, though I've gotten used to the areas enough to sorta find my way around.   Compar

Mooseantlers!

Due to surprisingly unexpected results of yesterday's split double-header between the Twins and White Sox, I've found myself in need of a Justin Morenau jersey. See, in the 7th inning of last night's game, Morenau came to the plate having already hit two homeruns in the game (first to right, then to center). The last time a Twin has hit three homers in a game was Tony Oliva back in like 1973. So it's no easy feat.   Well, I made the comment...in all seriousness...that if Morneau could put th

Mistika Or Mistake?

$13 for the Toa Mistika? Uh, ouch!   I was with them when they became $8, then defended $9. But I said a long time ago $10 was pushing my limits. And now they've not only hit my limit, they've surpassed it.   The "canister' sets are supposed to be like action figures. And $13 for an action figure (even if I can build it) is a stretch. Even DLX sized Transformers are only $10.   Wow...I was not expecting this. Hopefully my fellow Bionicle collectors share this concern and will stand by m

Missed It By That Much

You ever have one of those moments where you know exactly where you messed up and wished you could get a mulligan? I had a moment like that about an hour ago. Thankfully it didn't cost me anything but my own pride.   My dad took me out to eat Saturday night after we got back from moving my stuff out of the apartment. While there, I noticed a big banner advertising a Guitar Hero tournament every Tuesday. Down in Kato, my roomates and I got back into playing it. I had manged to become a mast

Merry X-mas!

I'm up late...or early depending on your view. Mostly because I'm pumped for the holidays. My mom and sister are flying in for a few weeks, and I'll be making two trips to my grandparents place (which means two X-Mas dinners, not too shabby when your a broke college kid).   A Christmas Story has started it's 24-hour loop on TNT, and my dog is sitting patiently waiting for me to go to bed. But there's a gift for me across the room and I have a good feeling that I know what it is. I've also p

Merry Christmas (etc.)

Merry Christmas to everybody. Regardless of what you celebrate, I hope you are able to enjoy this time of the year with the ones that mean the most to you!   PS: Expect a post-holiday report on my haul.

Merry Christmas (also Happy Holidays)

Haven't been around much, but with some time off from work for the holidays I thought I'd stop in and wish everybody a great next few weeks, whatever the cause for celebration. If you're someplace where there's snow...stay warm and drive safe. If you're some place where it's warm, stay cool. And also drive safe.   I'll likely report back with a "Haul" list once the season has passed.

Merry Christmas

I know not everybody celebrates it, but I do. So Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and all the other celebrations that come this time of year.   I'm flying out for the holidays, and will be back in time for New Year's. Normally VGM would fill in for me at a point like this, but I gave him some vacation time. Though I have no idea what he'd do with it.   Hope you have a great time over the next few weeks. Don't get too loaded up on holiday dinners, and try not to get bummed out if your team'

Mata-nui Is Mine Thanks To Target!

I was at Target today and saw that they're running a pretty good promo right now. Buy any Glatorian set (Legends or otherwise) and you get a free smaller set of your choice (I have no idea what they are called....Agosi?). On top of that, the sets are a buck off...so really it's too good to pass up.   I took advantage of the promo to pick up Mata-Nui (finally) and then since it was free I grabbed the quadrupedal Zesk. I have to say, I'm glad I finally did it because Mata-Nui is an awesome set

Masterpiece Is An Understatement

I've been fairly indifferent towards the Japanese Transformers Masterpiece line. It started with Optimus, then there was Ultra Magnus (aka Optimus White). I've seen pics of Starscream, but for whatever reason nothing really impressed me until I saw this pic:   That's right boys and girls, Megatron's getting a makeover. But it's no tank, or car, or whatever other forms he's been forced into in the years since Generation 1 ended. Nope, this time he's back to the old ways. MP-5 will be Mega

Mahri!

In all honesty, I've had them for a few weeks. But I've been so busy that I never had a chance to write a full review of them. I picked up a few a day over the course of one week, giving myself a chance to build and toy around with them without having too many at once. Well, remember what I said back when the Inika came out? The Mahri are everything I could've hoped for.   Each Mahri presents an interesting and unique build design, from Jaller's crabby ally (an pretty ingenious little twist

Mahri: Initial Reactions

Author's Note: The following entry contains discussion regarding the Toa Mahri's identities. These spoilers have been wrapped in appropriate tags where neccesary.   I've seen the leaked pics, so I have a better idea of what the Mahri are going to actually look like. However, having a chance to see them from multiple angles in the new news story has given me a chance to put things in perspective.   » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «First off, I'm thinking that the Mahri may n

Lost: My Crazy Theory

Warning: The following post contains random discussion of Lost and may not make a lick of sense to anybody who doesn't follow the show. As such, I the author apologize in advance for any confusion brought on by viewing the following content. Okay, while in the midst of a heated debate on last night's episode of Lost, I randomly quipped about how the castaways just happened to crashland in the middle of a war between the Dharma Initive and the Others. Still joking, I went on to jest: "Until

Lose Some, Win Some

So the Bowl didn't go quite as well as I'd hope, but on the plus side the Dark of the Moon trailer was pretty awesome. On that note, Hasbro followed up today with a flurry of pics of the new action figures. So of course...NERD TIME!   Take it in. The Ultimate Optimus Prime figure. It's the first time Optimus has had a trailer since his Powermaster days. The downside of this figure is that it's also about $80. Though given trends of the larger scale action figures my guess is it'll be half

Like Nuts & Gum: Together At Last

I'm quite shocked by the initial reactions I'm seeing from both Rock Band fans and LEGO fans following confirmation that LEGO Rock Band is coming this year. Both franchises are well known as being sources of family-friendly entertainment. I've played the two Star Wars titles and had a blast...and anybody who regulars The Haven knows a huge fan of the plastic instrument genre.   Harmonix, the people behind the RB franchise, have a reputation of putting out quality software...with RB1 and RB2 b

Lies, Dang Lies, And Statistics

While this is in regards to today's election, this is not a political thread. I just happened to see this report when I booted up my email this evening.   Yes. Your eyes aren't decieving you. With 0% of the precincts reporting, MSN has declared Obama the winner in Vermont. This is why the Horse-Race mentality the media takes into every election season drives me crazy.   I mean...C'MON. Even Wikipedia demands better references than that.

Let Me Have My Moment

As some of you may know, I am a huge Minnesota Twins fan. On Tuesday night, the Twins clinched the AL Central title...and with it their 6th playoff appearance in the last 9 years. And it doesn't stop there. Thanks to Tampa Bay spliting a four game series with the Yankees, the Twins will take the field Friday in Detroit with the BEST RECORD IN BASEBALL! If they can hold of the AL East...the Twins would then have home field advantage through the AL Championship series.   So pardon me for a mo

Lego Ben 10: A Lesson In What Not To Do

Hadn't really been following LEGO much outside of Bionicle...but was at the store today and saw the LEGO Ben 10 figures. $14-16 for 16 piece sets? For real? I can buy a decent sized Transformer for that kind of money. Not to mention the ACTUAL Ben 10 figures (if I actually collected those).   I know there was a lot of hand-wringing when Bionicle was first released. People were concerned that LEGO was losing sight of the original idea of building what you play with. Thankfully Bionicle pro

Le Sigh

I've been part of many fandoms in my time, and through all of them I've seen the different stages. And though I'm pleased that Bionicle's been around long enough to hit this current stage, I'm a bit bothered by the frequency and intensity with which its come. Though that's to be expected with the size of this forum comparred to the others I've been to.   But to all those people out there who make the topics which are getting to be a weekly affair: No, Bionicle is not in a decline. No, Bionicl

Lame...

So that 2009 Devastator that I was drooling over just got revealed. And it looks like Hasbro pulled a fast one. There's going to be TWO sets of Constructicons released alongside the movie. The first will be a series of normal Transformers, with robot modes, that range from the Deluxe to Voyager class.   But they won't combine.   The ones that will combine are the ones contained in the $100 set. However, they are grossly mispropotioned, and are actually missing one of their members. These

Kardas: An Exercise In Patience

As some of you may have noticed by now, I'm very excited for the release of the Kardas Dragon boxed set. In fact, it's gotten to the point where I'm avoiding going near the LEGO section in fear that I'll pick up the components before I get the big guy himself.   Now, you may be wondering why I'd do such a crazy thing. Surely instructions for Kardas will become readily available once the set is in the mainstream. And though it will most likely cost slightly less than the individual Titan sets

Kardas When You Least Expect It

It was ironic that only yesterday I had been looking back and wondering when the heck I'd have something worth posting in the Bionicle category here at the Haven. I had all but given up hope on seeing the actual Kardas giftset, and recently it seems as though the Titans were purposefully attempting to elude my grasp.   But yesterday, by a sheer stroke of luck, I saw it. I was at the mall late last night for a showing of "Man Of The Year" and stopped into Target out of sheer boredom. There, a

Karaoke: The Final Frontier

No, I didn't record myself singing your favorite hits. In fact, that's the last thing I'd want to subject any of you to. In my car, I'm a rockstar...but anywhere else I keep my mouth shut.   It's one of those things where you sit there thinking "Ooh ooh...I could do this song, or this one!" And it seems like a great idea, but then there's that little voice in the back of your head that fears embarrasment. A few weeks ago that voice almost gave in, but was quickly silenced when I was unable
