The Parade

Well, I was going to just sit there all morning and watch but my sister didn't want to watch so she started dragging me upstairs to play with her (since both my parents were busy).   So I start to leave just as the Foster's float pulls in and they start their song right when I'm at the foot of the stairs and halfway up the stairs all of a sudden! I hear the opening strains of something very familiar.   I'm like, "Wait did they change the channel? Why is 'Never Gonna Give You Up' on TV anyway t

1152x864

I swear I've never heard of such a screen resolution before.   Yet all the monitors in the 300 computer lab have that res. The first day that I had Comp Sci after I'd made the wallpaper I tried out the 1280x1024 and found, not to my great surprise, that it was too big. So when I got home I resized it to 1024x768 which is a pretty usual resolution. The next time I have Comp Sci I found out that it's too small. So I'm like "wut?" except I forget to check the screen res I think.   So the time aft

Firsts

Yesterday I was almost run over by a car. First time that's ever happened.   I mean, even now it seems almost surreal, you know? It all happened so fast, and I didn't have much time to be scared at the moment it happened, so I didn't really get scared afterward. Odd feeling.   Yesterday we were going out to eat, and it was near our house, so we were gonna walk there. I decided to bike instead. I come to the major road in front of our development, in fact the intersection of two major roads, on

The Book Thief

Anyone remember months and months ago, I believe I discussed I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak?   I've just finished another book of his. The Book Thief.   Oh my gosh it was amazing. It was just beautiful, a telling look into the triumph and tragedy of the human experience, about people, about life, death, and the power of words. Definitely a hundred percent reccommended to anyone who'll pass by a library or bookstore any time soon. It's long (took me over a week) but certainly worth it.   I

Ancient Greek Medicine

Reading the Iliad (translated by Richmond Lattimore) as summer reading for Lit Hum next year.   The ancient Greeks sure knew a lot about medicine. You can tell. They've got such detailed descriptions of exactly which internal organs were stabbed for each hero who falls.   In all seriousness though, it really does go to show how much about the human body they knew. They knew which organs and parts of the body were vital and would cause death if harmed, and which parts of the body could sustain

Tritungsten Oxide

WHAT. THE. HECK!?   All I'm finding off Google is like scholarly journals that I can't understand. Can I just get a simple explanation of WHY W3O8 is a neutral compound? I mean Oxygen has an oxidation number of 2-, there are eight of them, that makes a total of 16-. HOW DO YOU BALANCE A NEGATIVE 16 CHARGE WITH 3 ATOMS? 3 does not go into 16! There's no number I can assign Tungsten that will work! I mean, a compound that makes SENSE next time, please? >_<   It apparently exists as some we

Maya

Maya is really cool!   ...   >> IT'S A PROGRAM. 3D modeling program. Despite carrying an absurd $7000 price tag, it really is quite powerful. We've just started learning it, in class, and once you figure it out...   It's amazing how they did it...   And where they come up with the names for these tools. I mean, "loft"? When you're connecting two lines with a surface, why call it "loft"? What's that supposed to mean?   It's like how they assigned new meanings to common words when they

More Than Meets The Eye

So...   Transformers...   ...   Was AWESOME.   I saw it yesterday. =D   I mean, just expect really good action scenes because that's the point of this kind of movie. Many-layered characters and complex plot? Not really. Just a lot of explosions. And some pretty funny lines.   When Optimus Prime first appeared, everyone in the theater started cheering.   The CGI was truly incredible. I mean, I can't imagine how they got all those moving parts to work together... even the little guy was w

Why Exactly...

... is Ty Pennington on a Bayer commercial? o_O Shouldn't he be advertising furniture or Sears or something?   On the subject of commercials, that "Sun Setter retractable awning" commercial is so... I mean, that woman's voice is just so horribly fake... like, "But that's not all!" and stuff. Seriously.

I Just Noticed That...

In The Lion King 1 1/2 (the only half-serious one about Timon and Pumbaa) at one point, when Simba keeps waking Timon up for something (need to go to the bathroom, thirsty, bathroom again) and each time they walk over the log, and on the third time Timon says "I'm gonna get old walking over this thing..."   Well, I just noticed that they were referring to the scene from the original movie, during the Hakuna Matata sequence, which showed Timon and Pumbaa and Simba walking over that log, with Sim

Arts Stuffs

I know I'm not going to get any replies in CoT so I'm gonna put a link here anyway but also post the image itself.   Here's the topic.   Click to enlarge   Palmer Eldritch from... well, you can read the topic for that.   As I said in the comments to the previous entry I did find the image I was looking for in good quality, as well as a whole BLOG full of good-quality screencaps of Gurren Lagann. So I ended up assembing a wallpaper with that image and several other ones even if I don't inte

The 300 Word Rule

I suppose back when I first started writing MR it was actually of concern to me, but nowadays I find it hard to imagine that this could pose a problem to anyone. I find it hard staying under two thousand words for a chapter of a comedy. It just doesn't feel like enough room to tell the story segment fully. At this point, checking the word count is not, "Is it long enough?" it's, "Is it too long already?"   I dunno, just my thoughts on it... 'cuz I'll be writing, and I'll be like, "Okay, there's

Classic, Modern Sci Fi

Kinda occurred to me today one of the shifts in the tone of classic and modern sci fi... of course it's not a catchall rule, but the sort of "in general" feel of it...   In essence, it seems to me that classic sci fi offers a more utopian view of the future, whereas more modern sci fi offers a more dystopian view of the future.   Like I said, by no means completely generalizable. I mean, you've got the classics of dystopian literature in 1984 and Brave New World and whatnot. But a lot of the s

The Power Of Rock (wip 1)

I couldn't think of a better send-off to give the Matoran Universe as we leave it next year.   Once I'm done with this second, more refined sketch layer, I'm going to duplicate the layer (since I don't like losing information) and paint directly on top of it.   On another note, today I hit a milestone: the word document on which I have 52-pickup saved, excluding the pages of notes, is now 50 pages long. Chapter 6 is up to 1900ish words, so I can probably finish it today. Add to that all the fr

I Just Realized...

This image. Minus the eyedropper. = ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES!   The expression... the pose... who knows what she's holding?   Whipped this one up pretty quickly as an example.   She'sa gonna moida ya. >=3   While we're on the topic of images, can you say "beautiful high quality"? The Old Playground By The Ballpark

There used to be a playground not very far from my house. Three houses down, then accross the street, past the basketball court, past the baseball field, and there it was. All the other playgrounds in our development were much bigger, all big giants competing in size and flashiness, but this little guy had two slides, a funny mirror, a steering wheel, and a counter underneath for playing pretend "store."   Yeah, it was a very small playground, but when I was little, when we had just moved here,

English Assignment

So for English we have to write a "college essay" from the point of view of Iago, from Othello.   Interesting assignment (much better than "analyze this passage for theme and motifs"), but it's kinda difficult.   I like what I have so far, though...   Actually I think I can have some fun with this. I think I'll post the whole thing once I'm done.

I'm Going With The Flow But It Flows The Wrong Way

I like to write, and I wish I were good at it. I suppose when talent's not an option you just gotta train the skill...   But while sometimes the words just flow and you know the situation and it's just THERE and it all fits, other times I have to force it out the tip of my fingers. Like those annoying dried paint tubes, where you can hardly get the cap off and the tube itself is so scrunched up you gotta piledrive it to force anything out of it.   ANYWAY.   It's just hard, you know? If I need
