Ancient Greek Medicine

Reading the Iliad (translated by Richmond Lattimore) as summer reading for Lit Hum next year.   The ancient Greeks sure knew a lot about medicine. You can tell. They've got such detailed descriptions of exactly which internal organs were stabbed for each hero who falls.   In all seriousness though, it really does go to show how much about the human body they knew. They knew which organs and parts of the body were vital and would cause death if harmed, and which parts of the body could sustain

Anaglyph + Birthday

I work for Analglyph!   Okay, that typo NEVER gets old, I tell ya...   The people in the Anaglyph topic seem rather impatient... y'know checking maj is very useful, as I have some pretty interesting images on my normal account and some images on my other account (the "top secret" one) that are meant for staff eyes only. Such as the basic level diagram for level 2, as well as the entire first level of Iruini, in image form. Without the background or effects.   I forget if I put anything valu

An Ocean Of Pollen

Is what it feels like I just biked through. Twice.   Should have taken a Claritin. Should have taken a Claritin...   Today. Is. Really. Freaking. Hot. Tomorrow. Will. Be. Even. Worse.   As my friend put it in Comp Sci this morning, the weather's been like winter winter winter winter winter winter spring summer summer summer summer... I mean, this time last week I wouldn't wander out without two layers and a jacket, long pants, hood up, hands shoved in my pockets... today I'm in shorts, T-shir

Amazingly Inefficient

I applied for one of those college summer programs for high school kids, at Columbia University.   The application process has me absolutely stunned by its inefficiency.   For one thing, I sent them at least four e-mails requesting clarification, or any report on the status of my application. Not a single one of them has yet been returned. I mean, we're talking I sent these things at least a month ago. Heck, I was an early applicant! And aside from the whole not answering e-mails and not answe

Am I The Only One Surprised By This?

I learned today that the song "Happy Birthday To You" is technically copyrighted in the United States until 2030. Which is why you never hear it on TV or in movies, only variations or songs like "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow."   Am I the only one who didn't know this until now? o_O

Also On The Equator...

WHAT IF... there was a fence going around the Equator? Who would be inside the fence, and who would be outside the fence?   Or better. Let's say there's an imaginary planet with this fence around its Equator, and the fence is built so that it lies PERFECTLY on one plane, right on the middle line of that planet, with EXACTLY the same amount of atoms on both the North and the South sides of that plane. The north pole is EXACTLY as far from the fence as the south pole is. The North population is e

All About The Motivation

Sister: If the Olympics happen in America can we go see them?   Me: You're gonna have to wait and see if New York puts in a bid for the 2016 Olympics.   Mom: 2016?   Me: London has 2012, remember?   Mom: Oh yeah.   Sister: Why New York? Because Daddy works there?   Me: Because it's close, doesn't matter whether or not Daddy works there.   Mom: (to my sister) And how old will you be in 2016?   Sister: Um... 15?   Mom: Think about it. What year were you born?   Sister: 2002.   Mom: So w

Ah, The Summertime...

You know what's great about summertime?   The sheer fact that I have absolutely nothing to talk about here. No more busy bustling days and running around doing a bajilliion things that I can write about, nope. Just staying at home and doing mundane stuff.   And having the time of my life.

Acoustics

The room I'm staying in is way too echoey.   I'm afraid to cough at night because it always rings out and I think I've woken somebody. O_O   Not to mention my habit of talking to myself...

Ac 14!

Maybe yesterday's sketch didn't give the full scope of the idea I had... only basic layout, after all.     As you can tell, I decided on the sword coming in around neck height (hence the massive highlights roundabouts). Color is one of my weaknesses, I mean in general. I do fine on an individual piece, but I need a good sense of shadow and form for the entire figure, you know? I think I'll have to lay down many bases and constantly check myself. That was the problem with my AC13 entry, each s

A Yay And An Argh

Two arghs actually. And a few lols.   The quick stuff out of the way first.   I FINALLY BEAT MY FASTEST TIME ON CAVE STORY SACRED GROUNDS. YAY! Still nowhere near that crazy two-minute record but I'm down to 6:50. I was so close to getting it in under 6, too, but I timed the final jump badly, ended up falling off, and died on Ballos fourth form. ARGH.   Today in math class we learned the disk method of integration. My teacher had trouble pronouncing "disk." I won't go further for fear of enra

A Question Of Modern Etiquette

Somebody has headphones on and is listening to their MP3 player. The volume is so loud that the people around them can hear the music. Somebody else yells at them to turn the volume down.   Who is being rude and selfish, the person who is blasting their music or the person who yells at them to turn it down?   I tried to write that unbiased but if you know me or have read an entry I made some time ago, you'll know which side I'm on. I want to see whether I'm the only one who is bothered by this

A Dream...

Over forty years ago a certain man had a dream. That all people in the world could be equal, that no basis of race would be cause for discrimination.   It was a dream that he fought, and died, for. But how well are we keeping the dream alive today?   It's something to think about. How many people still make a conscious effort? Has everyone truly learned to accept? Do politics and religion and business leave room for an equal playing field for everyone?   Has one man's dream really come true?

A Darkling Plain

I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR MONTHS!   Aw man, I just finished it, after borrowing it on Monday... and it was really good. I kinda do wish he'd developed the ending more, because you know, you grow to love those characters, but I suppose a happy future was implied and the rest is best left up to the imagination. The sort-of-epilogue was nice, I liked it.   But see, now I'm really angry.   Because the film rights to the books have been sold...   AND THEY'RE ONLY MAKING TWO.   Yes that's ri

90 Minute Delayed Reaction

Guess what? It snowed about two inches today. Thats JUST enough that a car coming by will crush it into ice as opposed to just melting it under friction, like when we got a centimeter. So naturally roads covered in ice are not exactly safe, so we need to bring in the plows.   Therefore, lo and behold, we got a 90 minute delayed opening! Huzzah!   Guess what? JUST as I was loading the school website to check for a delayed opening, as my danged internet connection was going "Connecting... connec

52-pickup: Chapter 1

Click here, first chapter, .doc format.   I've finished chapter 2, started chapter 3, but I wanted to get some feedback on what I got so far. So I copied my text for chapter 1, converted the BBCode tags to actual italics, neatened it up a bit, and uploaded it.   Once again, this is set after the events at the end of this year's storyline. Hopefully nothing major happens from now on to contradict my premise and screw me up.   I'm afraid it's a bit of a slow start; I hope to pick up the pace in

52-pickup Final Author's Notes

Posted here so as not to clutter up the topic. Author's notes after the jump.     Final Author’s Notes   You really don’t have to read this. This is just my rambling and random facts about the writing of this story.   To start off: I don’t believe I finished that.   This is not like finishing a short story or a drawing or something, this was huge. How huge? In case anyone wants some statistics, as of this writing (I might do a couple more revisions) the story proper, minus my notes, stands a

3 Hp

I'm currently doing a 3 HP run of Cave Story.   BTW, just so you know, it's a free game. Just google it, and download it. You'd have to download it with the English translation tho.   Anyway, you get these Life Capsules to increase your max HP, but they're pick-up items, so all I do is, I avoid them.   And I'm on Monster X right now and it's REALLY REALLY HARD. Since EVERYTHING does at least 3 damage to you, therefore touch anything = instant death. AND there's no save point immediately befor

2010

First off, happy February 1st. Well ain't it great that I remembered it's a new month?   Secondly, it's 2007. No duh. In 3 years it will be 2010. Aren't you all glad that I know my addition?   My point is, when it comes to 2010, will you say "twenty-ten" or "two-thousand-and-ten" (or "two-thousand-ten")?   On a completely unrelated note, I got to use three different punctuation marks in a row! That is, " ")? ". Which makes it five. Yay. I reached six before...   Anyway, yeah. That was the po

2006: A Recap

Okay, so let's get up to speed here... starting from the end of July 2006, which is close enough to the last blog entry.   The first major event worth notice that occured after the last entry of last year was that I took a 3-week trip to China with my parents and my sister, who is 4. It was interesting to say the least. We definitely had a lot of fun, but it's a lot of the little things that you really notice...   Funny story, I once got myself lost in the subway system whilst in China. My par
