Grammar

All over the Internet, I see nearly everyone using wrong grammar. Because so many people are doing it wrong, I've started thinking: maybe I am the stupid one! Maybe I'M the one who's doing it wrong!

Take a look at this older entry. Are the definitions of each word described in that entry wrong??

Why y'all be a complaining 'bout gramma on you're favorite sites on the internets. Their just people who don't care two much. So you're complaining is just making you loose you're mind. So don't take it to seriously.

Nah, they're all right.

Not sure about the 'using wrong grammar' though. I feel it should be 'bad grammar' rather than wrong, but that's probably me just being picky and 'wrong grammar' is fine. WHO KNOWS.

I completely agree.

If your going to type in the English language, than you should at least get it right. Theirs no reason too massacre it.

I think I just had an aneurysm AND a heart attack from that.

While I appreciate proper grammar, I think expecting that everyone should use proper grammar on the internet is a bit idealistic. The important part of using any language is to make oneself understood. Thus "informal" grammar is OK in contexts where the message is still understood. At the same time, if a person really does use grammar bad enough that they can't be understood, it's their own problem, since they're the ones who are trying to broadcast a message in the first place and that effort goes to waste.

Additionally, I'm a user on another LEGO forum where not everyone is a native English speaker. So while obviously a person on an English-language site is expected to have some proficiency in the language, it can't always be assumed that they know all the rules of grammar and mechanics by heart. Some native English speakers even struggle with these rules, and even those in careers that require proper grammar (like journalists or copy editors) tend to keep books on hand to consult some of these grammar and usage rules on the fly.

The rules of English grammar are as complex as the English language itself, and you can't expect everyone to know all of these rules any more than you can expect them to know all of the words in the language. One thing we can agree on, though, is that people should always try to learn and apply the rules of grammar, and should recognize when they are choosing, for the sake of informality, not to follow them.
