:kaukau: Wow. Yeah, I just logged on and saw that there's some sort of big thing going on. And just so Scanty Demon knows, I was joking when I posted in her blog. Dude, BZPower's beginning to become just like the rest of the internet. This is where I go to escape all of that madness.

Pretty much this. Jokes are jokes, but oh well.

:kaukau: Eh, you know, I made a joke that people should ideally marry the person they hate the most, and people thought I was dead serious. It's kind of official that you can't make jokes if they're related to something potentially controversial, because this becomes the reaction.

Do not discuss politics on BZPower. -B6

I'd like to launch a formal protest against this edit. I was not discussing "politics" or pushing a political issue - I was filling in Brickeens on some news he might not have been aware of. Are we not allowed to mention the existence of senates, and that "a bill" was being filibustered? Really? I didn't go into detail about what SB5 or DOMA were about (other than saying "a bill to limit reproductive freedom" - which is just stating a fact, nothing more). I feel strongly that I refrained even from taking an obvious side in the issue and ESPECIALLY from talking about the political discourse surrounding it, other than saying "passions became heated."

I don't understand what is being considered "political" here - is the mention of government period considered political? Is the mention of extant bills explicitly banned, even if we don't talk about the content and controversy and political discussion surrounding them? All I did was tell Brickeens the impetus for all this discussion. I did not push any political agenda at all.

I'm not angry, and I know you're just trying to do your job, but I sincerely feel this edit was in error. -PG

Naturally some of these passions spilled over into BZPower. Unfortunately, some very tasteless jokes were made (not necessarily in direct malevolence, but the case was so regardless), and understandably a lot of folks got PRETTY HEATED. Et voila, hopefully that explains the situation! Also, how are you?? I haven't noticed an entry by you in a little while. Are you going to be making it to BrickFair this year?

Pretty much this. Jokes are jokes, but oh well.

Yo, jokes are sometimes tasteless, unfunny, and reinforce things that hurt us daily - and we have every right to be upset by them.

Oh thanks Smeag, I actually did hear about what's been going down in Texas and California, I just missed the entry that caused all the action here on BZP last night. I'm up to speed now. (And also appalled at certain things said so thank you so much for this entry because it is perfect in every way.)

(And I'm doing okay thanks for asking, but unfortunately I won't be at Brickfair this year. :<)

To anyone who is afraid this small explosion may have been their fault: People were already fired up about this and had been posting entries on Wednesday morning that were either deleted or shut down. There's very high emotions about equality right now in North America so it's pretty much everywhere, and I don't think it's bad that it is being addressed and discussed on this website. If you're getting overwhelmed or upset to the point that it's freaking you out, I would seriously recommend taking a break. Go and do something else you really enjoy and just breathe.

If a joke is disgusting and tasteless, then it's not okay. You can't just say whatever you like under the guise of a joke, especially offensive things dealing with deep-rooted issues that people are physically, mentally, and emotionally struggling with and fighting against. That's harmful and it will be shut down on this website.

Brickeens I'm sad you won't be making it! :'( We are obvs gonna have to do something as a tribute to you.

But why must it spill in here in BZP?

There's no "spilling" going on. This stuff is part of reality, part of life. It doesn't magically go away on BZPower. If it did, we'd be using the magical sparkly BZ shelter over the entire earth.

Unfortunately, this plan fell through.

:kaukau: Okay, I would actually have a much better idea of what was going down if I knew that "Teh PATRIARCHY" was a reference to. If it turns out there's some truly offensive meaning to that name, I get it. Otherwise, I just read it and I thought it was something completely random.

The patriarchy is a concept in feminist theory that the world, generally, is dominated by all males so that all females can be subjugated, and that there are many elite males who conspire to keep it that way. I think the concept is a bit lacking in many regards (I believe there are more than a few logical inconsistencies in the theory), but it is apparently a dearly-held belief to many. I don't know about The Scanty Panty, but I would not have gotten involved with that if I knew there was going to be the kind of backlash there was.

No, that's not really it at all. The insidious nature of the patriarchy is that it's predominantly subconscious, and that it permeates our entire culture. It's not some small cabal of people pulling the strings - this is not a conspiracy theory - it's centuries of aggression and harmful tradition and misogynistic concepts that we take for granted because they're so ingrained in our society now.

By pulling back and being aware of these things, we can overcome them, in solidarity, and achieve equality among genders!

It's not a theory or a concept. It's literal, observable fact that our society is male-dominated. And believe me, it's anything but "dear" to me.

If the patriarchy is real, men have done a terrible job implementing it. If you take a good look at society, right now, you'll find just about as much evidence of discrimination against men as discrimination against women. Jail time, capital punishment, child support, custody rulings, and the draft are blatantly discriminatory against men, and there is plenty of social stigma related to leaving children alone with men.

I'm not saying there aren't issues on the women's side - to the contrary, there are plenty of them. But the folly of feminism is that it aims to solve all gender issues by focusing on only one gender. History is much more complex than just 'male over female'. If that was the case, why did men fight exclusively in wars? Why were women and children given precedence in emergencies and were spared in war, while men were left to die and were slaughtered in war? Why were men expected to perform almost all work?

did you even

did you even read the post you were replying to

read it again because it makes it pretty clear that it's not some kind of consciously-implemented system

because society says that women are weaker than men and that women are meant to raise children

all those things you just mentioned are examples of sexism and misogyny congratulations you just answered your own flippin question

Men hold over 80% of governing power in the USA despite being less than half the population.

There has never been a woman president, or even a woman presidential nominee from a major party.

9 out of 10 sexual assault victims are women.

Men make as much as 30% more than women, on average, when working the same job with the same level of performance quality.

Most medical insurances cover prostrate exams for men, and do not cover mammograms for women.

Women are not allowed in many military units.

Women are lambasted for promiscuity while men are celebrated for it.

People are considered deviant if wives and children don't take their husband/father's last name - which is a direct carryover from a period when wives were literally considered property.

Just this week, men in the Texas senate refused to even acknowledge a woman senator until she stood up and cried "At what point must a female senator raise her hand or her voice to be recognized over the male colleagues in the room?"

This is just barely scraping the surface. Believe me, the men have done quite a good job of implementing a system where they stay on top.

Every single example you've listed of 'discrimination against men' is because of the patriarchy. Men are drafted, sent to war, and expected to 'provide' because they are explicitly considered the strong ones - the ones with power. Men are delegated into that role because society says women are 'weak.' The whole idea of Men performing the 'work' and 'providing for their family' is also a power play - which you can still see today by the number of men who bristle at the idea of a woman 'bringing home the bacon.'

Your perception of feminism is completely false. Feminism is EXPLICITLY focusing on ALL gender issues, because the goal of the movement is EQUALITY. The critical step is dismantling the marginalization and oppression of the victimized class - i.e., women, i.e., the naming convention. When those discriminations are removed - you'll find that these supposed "discriminations against men" were the direct result of them in the first place.

The patriarchy hurts EVERYBODY - women and men. And Feminism is a movement to help EVERYBODY - women and men (and everyone in-between)

edit: Ryuujin, what a perfect post you made while I was typing this! <3

I was working on this, but you're faster.

Smeag is good like that. Everything I've wanted to say about the issue he's said it better, quicker, and more coherent than I ever could.
