ALL SUMMER LONG! (Smash Files 40)

I missed quite a bit of Super Smash Bros. news while I was away this summer; so, for your enjoyment, here is a MASSIVE Smash File dedicated to profiles for every fighter announcement that I missed.

Metaknight Profile

Ba9WSQC.png

Species: ???

Series: Kirby

First Appearance: Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii, 2012)

Favourite Appearance: N/A (I have yet to play his game)

Party: 1st

Known For: Being banned from many tournaments, being awesome, being a bad guy, being a hero, always wearing that mask

Excitement Factor: 6/10 - I never really used Metaknight that much and I doubt I will this time around; but it would feel weird if he wasn't in the game.

Being overpowered again, I see.

Lucina Profile

QD4v2zk.png

Species: Human

Series: Fire Emblem

First Appearance: Fire Emblem: Awakening (3DS, 2013)

Favourite Appearance: Fire Emblem: Awakening (3DS, 2013)

Party: 1st

Known For: Being a clone, being a surprise, being a spoiler, not being who she says she is, and being a clone

Excitement Factor: 2/10 - WHY SAKURAI, WHY???? WHY MUST SHE BE A CLONE OF MARTH?

At least this picture is cool.

Robin Profile

tsDtiiP.png

Species: Human

Series: Fire Emblem

First Appearance: Fire Emblem: Awakening (3DS, 2013)

Favourite Appearance: Fire Emblem: Awakening (3DS, 2013)

Party: 1st

Known For: Being two genders, actually being a unique fighter, being you, saving the world

Excitement Factor: 9/10 - Conversely, I'm very excited to try Robin out! And I'm happy that there are two gender options. Although for this very reason I'm wondering why Lucina couldn't be included with Marth if she's just going to be a clone character.

Magical spells shall help us to rule the world!

Captain Falcon Profile

lkuEZeC.png

Species: Human

Series: F-Zero

First Appearance: F-Zero (SNES, 1991)

Favourite Appearance: F-Zero GX (GCN, 2003)

Party: 1st

Known For: Being a bounty hunter who never uses his gun, racing, allowing Mario Kart to borrow his vehicle, and FALCON PAWWWNCH!

Excitement Factor: 8/10 - He is necessary for Smash and I always like to give him a try every now and then. I'll never main Captain Falcon, but he sure is fun to use.

Do I even need to say it?

FAAAAAALCOOOOOOOOON PAAAAAAAAWNNNNNCH!!!

Also, Lucina's not a costume swap because her abilities were tweaked a bit in comparison to Marth. I think I like her being in better than, say, Chrom, though. =P

She's apparently lightning-quick Marth or something.

Not just that. From what I recall, Marth's hitboxes are programmed so that hitting a foe with just the tip of the sword does much more damage compared to hitting with the rest of it (which suits his preference for rapiers), whereas Lucina's damage output is spread along the length of the blade.

In any case, having Lucina as a female option for Marth would make little sense, since unlike the Wii Fit Trainers, Villagers, and Robin, she's a distinct character from Marth rather than an alternate gender option in her original game. I think that, given Lucina's fighting style, she works well as a Marth clone, and I was happy for both her announcement and Robin's, since I had basically lost all hope of having a non-male, non-blue-haired non-swordsman, and between her and both versions of Robin, we were given all of the above. I wonder what Lucina's Final Smash will be? I love that Robin's, like Marth's before it, takes a game mechanic (in this case, the Dual Support system from Awakening) and runs with it.

To be honest, I'm hoping Lucina follows in the tradition of just using random skills, regardless of usefulness, and gets Lethality or Astra as her final smash. A guaranteed KO or five pretty strong hits would be very nice.

Failing those, the Aether from FE13 would be nice too.

Aether would probably make the most sense, since it's one of her default skills regardless of who her mother is. Of course, she could always just share Marth's Critical Hit—perhaps with an animation more akin to those in FE:A. Or they could go with something really random that wasn't a default attack in Awakening—perhaps something involving Naga, or the Outrealm Gate she came through.

Well, I mean, IIRC Ike never got Aether in his games, and Lucina has Counter despite the fact that she can literally never have it in her game, so. Random skills make sense in the way that they don't really make any sense, but are still used.

You know, I would be more annoyed Lucina is a clone of Marth, but after Brawl, I realized that the tiniest differences can pretty much decide which character I want to use.

On a superficial level, Link and Toon Link are the same character, the only difference being that Link is slow and heavy while Toon Link is fast and nimble. But every time I try to play regular Link, I just cannot feel comfortable with him at all. Conversely, Toon Link is one of my favorite characters to play as in Brawl and one of my mains.

So sure, maybe it would have been nice if Lucina was given a different moveset and playstyle, but who knows? Players might come up with completely different tactics and techniques for her and Marth. The very fact that Marth's sword has a sweetspot at the tip and Lucina doesn't I think should play a large factor in the differences of their playstyles.

I also very much like having Robin in this game rather than Chrom, because Fire Emblem characters in Smash Bros. seem to just fit a few... Archetypes. Like, royals who wield legendary swords and have Counters and stuff, which is fine and all, but man does Robin look great.... Using tomes and magic for Special moves? Breakable weapons which require tactical thinking to make the best out of every attack? A Down B that ISN'T a Counter?

Ladies and gents, along with Mega Man, I have found a character whom I will definitely make my main no matter what.

Ike DEFINITELY got Aether—in fact, the ability was exclusive to him up until Awakening.

As for Lucina's Counter, it's arguably not the same as the sklll by the same name in Awakening, but rather just a literal counterattack. After all, that move has been used by Marth since his Smash debut, despite the skill system not existing in any of his games. And it manifests as a block and counterattack, rather than simply taking the damage and damaging the attacker by the same amount like the skill.

I'm really in the camp against Lucina's inclusion (as well as quite a few others from probably-true-at-this-point leaks that are just clones). I fully understand that she is different. A little. But I don't feel like the differences are strong enough to warrant being a separate character on the roster. At least from the sounds of it. After playing, that feeling could completely change.

Well, here's a thought that I have that may or may not be true in the long run, but yes, minute differences really CAN make all the difference and warrant another roster spot.

Again, Marth's sword has a sweetspot, Lucina's does not. Marth's playstyle will likely focus on careful spacing to ensure the tip of the sword always strikes. Lucina does not need to bother with that, so she might be able to get in more close, which then branches off into completely different strategies and ways of playing the characters.

I'm no expert on Smash by any means though, so that's just pure speculation.
