so, uh...breakdown?

Today, for the first time ever, I had to halt the presentation I was supposed to be giving at about half of the time because some question from the professor threw me off so much I had the choice between a) staying there and crying (!!!) in front of the whole room or b) excusing myself and exiting the room. FUN. (I chose option b, obviously. could not stop the tears. that must have looked awful.)

And then they closed the lesson meanwhile, because the other speakers had already taken up way too much time so my talk had started basically after the end of the allotted time, anyway.

So... I'm kind of devastated. And I have no idea how to proceed about this. Nothing like that has ever happened to me before.

Sorry to hear that happened to you. Did the professor ask it in a particularly snotty way, or was it just something that you were completely unprepared for, causing you to panic?

Either way, that really sucks, hope it goes better next time.

(Also, I must confess: I'm interested to know what, exactly, the question was?)

I'm sorry to hear that. Giving presentations tends to suck in general and they are worse when you aren't prepared for advanced questions. It's not your fault that the subject of ypur presentation wasn't directly in your field though, and it isn't anything you should beat yourself up over.

But try not to worry too much. Trust me, one day you'll look back at this and laugh it off (or roll your eyes sarcastically and slightly cringe) and it will all be okay.

But in the meantime, Internet hugs. ♡♡♡

+1 internet hug

As someone who has taken Option A previously I know situations like this are a very unique brand of horror that are hard to see beyond.  I found going back to be much smoother than I thought it would be, so I’ll echo Tekulo and say don’t worry too much.  Overthinking it is just going to make it seem way worse than it actually was!

I understand, having done my time in academia. I understand the devastation, but hope you can find compassion and understanding from yourself others. I'm not quite sure how to put it, but, I've been there. [offers a hug]

More of the latter, I presume. Telling the whole story would probably take too long, but it was more the problem that to illustrate my point, I used a word that is actually tied to some very specific concept already, and I could not make it clear that I meant something completely different. (on an 'it would be funny if it weren't so sad' side-note: the word was 'balloon'. Really.)

Anyway, frustration about not getting my point across turned to panic somehow.

And thank you for the kind words and internet hug. :3

thanks. yeah that certainly did not help with me feeling secure about what I was going to talk about. :/

Hopefully, yes. Or it will suddenly pop up when I am trying to fall asleep ("Remember that time you had to halt the presentation because you had to start crying? Wasn't that EMBARASSING?") ._.
