Scientific Attempt To Create Most Annoying Song Ever

An online poll conducted in the '90s set Vitaly Komar, Alex Melamid and David Soldier on a quest to create the most annoying song ever. After gathering data about people's least favorite music and lyrical subjects, they did the unthinkable: they combined them into a single monstrosity, specifically engineered to sound unpleasant to the maximum percentage of listeners. The song is not new, but it resurfaced on Dial "M" for Musicology.

Amazingly, this "most unwanted music" contains little dissonance -- that would have been too easy. For the most part, they seem to have tried to assemble these elements in a listenable way.

Komar & Melamid and David Soldier's list of undesirable elements included holiday music, bagpipes, pipe organ, a children's chorus and the concept of children in general (really?), Wal-Mart, cowboys, political jingoism, George Stephanopoulos, Coca Cola, bossanova synths, banjo ferocity, harp glissandos, oompah-ing tubas and much, much more. It's actually a fascinating listen, worthwhile for the opera rapping alone. (We didn't think that was possible either.)

Here's a download/listen link.

(mmkay BZP doesn't allow tiny url apparently, so I'm going to upload it on rapidshare. Give me like, half an hour >___>)

That was actually amazing.

It could be made into an epic, starring an Opera/Rapper from the downtown streets of urban Washington, a Cowboy who falls in love with said Operapper, a Hillbilly, a bunch of kids who are paid by Walmart to advertise for them everywhere they go, the megaphone totting leader of the kids, and a pirate (a good pirate).

I guess it's true what they say;

When something is really bad, if you find some other things that are just as bad, put them in a blender and shred them together, and you will have a masterpiece made of shredded paper.

oh my god that song

i love that song so much

Seriously, it's a bit eerie. I was listening to that song as I came across this post. I've even posted the lyrics to this song in the Song Lyrics thread, so if you wish to brave the Linken Park lyrics and other such nonsense, you'll find something worth seeing.

Mosey on over here. Trust me, they don't ruin the experience.

Augh, they had this whole scientific way of doing things and you didn't use the exact words.

The most unwanted music is over 25 minutes long, veers wildly between loud and quiet sections, between fast and slow tempos, and features timbres of extremely high and low pitch, with each dichotomy presented in abrupt transition. The most unwanted orchestra was determined to be large, and features the accordion and bagpipe (which tie at 13% as the most unwanted instrument), banjo, flute, tuba, harp, organ, synthesizer (the only instrument that appears in both the most wanted and most unwanted ensembles). An operatic soprano raps and sings atonal music, advertising jingles, political slogans, and "elevator" music, and a children's choir sings jingles and holiday songs. The most unwanted subjects for lyrics are cowboys and holidays, and the most unwanted listening circumstances are involuntary exposure to commercials and elevator music. Therefore, it can be shown that if there is no covariance—someone who dislikes bagpipes is as likely to hate elevator music as someone who despises the organ, for example—fewer than 200 individuals of the world's total population would enjoy this piece.

In other news, it does not surprise me that the most unwanted ensemble includes so many of my favorite instruments. That is what I get. That is my lot in life.

It should also come as no surprise that they made the Most Wanted Music in a similar fashion, and that it sucks. A lot. A LOT.

I dare not listen while my family is around.

"Who's that wearing those silly shoes?

We are wearing those silly shoes!

Well I don't like your silly shoes!

Well, we really like our silly shoes!

Please stop wearing those silly shoes!

We won't stop wearing our silly shoes!

They're just shoes, man!

Well I've learned to respect your silly shoes.

The respect for you is so that we won't lose!

*Burp*

...Can I try on a pair of your silly shoes?

Man, stop talking about those silly shoes."

...They should've plugged that in somewhere.

It's awesome.
